Goodbye La Vieille - A Legendary & Loving Tchimpounga Chimp

- This December, 2016, we said goodbye to La Vieille, a gentle old soul who lived at JGI’s Tchimpounga sanctuary for 24 years.
Rescued in 1992 after being abandoned at the Pointe Noire zoo, La Vieille arrived at Tchimpounga as an adult chimp who had suffered the loss of her mother and long periods of isolation. But her spirit endured, and she became a surrogate mother to the youngest rescued chimpanzees at Tchimpounga. She showed these frightened infants the love and affection that was stolen from them when poachers too them from the forest and their families. She will so be missed!

What a destiny, what a fate, her mother was killed and she herself became the mother of many orphans. Rest In Peace La Vielle.

@Dreamer 1 Please don't call people "evolutionists". That's a made up word that religious people use to disparage the theory of evolution. It implies that evolution is a belief system/worldview instead of a scientific theory based on mountains of evidence. We never call people "gravitationalists" or "atomic modelists" so why would we do that with evolution?

With that grey coat and grey facial hair,she looks so damn knowledgeable!!another shot of her looking down at the little one and the baby is looking right back into her eyes with so much attn,just blows my mind when I see these primates literally laughing with one of us or hugging one of us,hate it when people try and say that we are SO different,cuz we're not in fact we are SO similar,its crazy,not just chimps,but all the great apes including bonobos who may actually be the MOST like us,its weird but if u took a bonobo and a chimp u would kind of have both sides of a human,the chimp can be vindictive and very mean and untrustworthy and the bonobo is the opposite,they are peaceful and more loving!!

I just saw her death on Curiosity Stream's Rescued Chimpanzees of the Congo with Jane Goodall program and I'm crying now. It wasn't in the program, so, please tell me if Jane Goodall and LA Vieille got to see each other one last time. I'm really hoping that they did but the documentary wanted to be respectful and allow them their privacy. I don't need to know what happened when they saw each other one last time, just, if they did. They seemed so so close and I want that for La Vieille. 🥺
