The solution seen in the beginning I believe is Aqua Regia, which is latin for “Royal Water.” It is made up of Nitric Acid and Hydrochloric Acid which can dissolve gold into a water soluble form. This proves useful as in solution gold can be easily separated from other metal contaminants such as silver, copper, etc. To drop the gold back out of solution, a small amount of Sodium Metabisulfite is added which is seen as the white powder added in the beginning. Thus the dark yellow powder that is left is fine gold particles.

Gosh my family had so much gold in the 40-80’s 😢 mostly all of mine including the jewels were stolen 😭🥺 it meant so much to me as a lot of it were presents from passed loved ones given at my wedding, birthdays , anniversaries etc. Robbers have no idea the hurt & trauma they bring upon victims 😢

Please preheat your mold. Maybe you do and you just left that part out but in case you don’t let me tell you. You need to preheat your mouth to eliminate surface moisture. Even if you’ve got it bone dry looking there is still enough surface moisture to cause an explosion when the hot metal hits the mold.

This is only possible with aqua regia which is a 1:3 mixture of nitric and hydrochloric acid. Cody‘s lab has a lot of informative videos on this. Also i think the salt added to reduce the gold is sodium thiosulfate as i have no clue what sulfate would be doing in this chemical environment at all (it‘s pretty inert, thiosulfate however is s common reducing agent).
