Thanks everyone for watching! It has been an interesting and educating journey making content. One thing I've come to learn is the impact UA-cam's Compression can have on the footage from all these Retro Enhancement Devices. Keep in mind that some detail is always lost with compression. My commentary is in response to what I've experienced from playing on my TV and watching the Raw Capture Files. I've added this info to the description of videos going forward, but wanted to post this comment to all the videos prior to that change. Thanks again for watching, I really appreciate it!
Thanks so much! I think some of these cables have their audio channels reversed, I covered that in a follow up video. Listen to your game audio to determine if you need to swap the Left/Right channels like I did.
The 5X Pro + component makes Metroid look great- especially since I can't get into Prime with how it looks scaled up with the Carby- but I don't know if I want to spend 360 bills to get me there- I will hope the rumors of the re-created prime coming this year are true-
I hope so too. I’d gladly buy them for switch even if all they did was a basic bump in performance. I hope that they give support for “normal control” though, it would be cool to have the choice for pointer or original controls for Prime 1 and 2.
I just bought this cable off amazon and I got a sealed box with an xbox 360 AV cable inside of it. I obviously sent it for a return but I hope to actually get this cable soon...
Thanks! Yes, I’ve been using the Prism Cables with my 5X Pro since getting them, that’s the main way I play GameCube now. Uploaded videos playing some of the Mario Sports titles on GameCube, the capture for those is done with the Prism Cables and the 5X Pro as well, came out really nice (Retro Boost Arcade ( ua-cam.com/play/PLWCN_tXkRcyCHAhL4Kj_FEp2P--80yt0v.html ) I really like the performance of the two together.
Impressive job ! Must be pretty long to create all those videos ! By the way : I heard that Retro-bit Prism Component has made a mistake with Audio : left is right and right is the let audio channel....
After doing some recent testing: Confirmed! The Audio Channels are swapped. Never noticed it until I tested a game that has clear and distinct use of stereo sound. When in Luigi’s Mansion, ghosts that would spawn in off screen and travel from one side would have their audio on the opposite. Very noticeable.
I also heard that some people get static or popping noises with these cables. I read reviews on amazon and that is second most common complaint about them, after the audio swap. I don’t think it’s 100% of the cables, since some people reported no problems with theirs.
I was thinking of getting the Retrotink 2x Pro or M....but damn that 5x looks really good on Super Mario Sunshine and that's the game I really want to play right now. Are they easy to use? Only heard about them for the first time a few days ago.
@HoennMaster If you have a GameCube, Wii, or anything else that uses component, I’d recommend either the 2X Pro M or 5X Pro, since they support 480p pass through, letting you run games in 480 to 576p for consoles like the GameCube. As far as ease of use goes, the 2X Pro and Pro M are basically plug and play, the only real operating to be had is choosing what filter you like on the 2X Pro or scan lines on/off for either. The 5X Pro boots up in a perfectly acceptable output mode, operating it got a lot easier with the new on screen menu if you want to customize or tailor the experience further. I recently posted a video on what that looks like: ua-cam.com/video/LjVG7ujAoVc/v-deo.html
@@RetroBoost Thank you for the link! I've been trying to find the best way to play my Gamecube and Wii and been so overwhelmed with all the products. Appreciate the video to help me decide!
Hey I don’t know if you’ll find this comment but on the off chance you do I had a question. I got the retro tink 2x to play GameCube on my monitor (32in AOC curved monitor) and it worked perfectly. I then decided to order the retrobit prism component cables for GameCube. I plugged the prism cables into the retro tink 2x and the picture quality appeared the same as before.. I then realized I needed to activate progressive scan mode (PSM) and when I did the picture split into 2 separate images. I believe the issue is with my monitor but I don’t understand why it would not support PSM. Any insight on this issue would be extremely appreciated. Thanks
Do you have a 2X-Pro? The 2X-Pro cannot accept 480p, it's "max" is 488i/576i which it would then line double to 480p. A 480p signal would be glitchy, the picture would drop off and on, and I can recall seeing a double image effect when using my Wii once when in 480p mode. Some CRTs and Monitors cannot take 480p though also, as my research has revealed. The split image is an indicator that the screen itself can't take 480p. Seems to be more an issue model to model with CRTs than modern day monitors though. If you are trying to give a 2X-Pro 480p though, that is the issue 100%, as it cannot take 480p as an input source.
I did a GC prism into GCOMP multi component automatic switch through a RetroTink 5x and the image is black and white or it has lines all over and is unplayable. What is going wrong? My GameCube works for sure
That sounds like what happens when component is the cable in use, but composite is the input selected. Make sure you have it wired correctly, such as not getting the Red Video and Red Audio mixed up.
Hey. So what happens if you connect the GameCube through the 2x pro (not the 2x pro m)? Will it still pass through? Just interlaced? Or will it simply not work at all? I apologize but I just want to make sure I understand that portion of the video. Thanks!
Perfectly valid question! The 2X Pro cannot accept a 480p signal and pass it through, it has to be 480i or lesser. So when booting up the GameCube, if it happened to ask you “would you like to enable progressive scan?” You would need to say no, the game then runs in interlaced output. The 2X Pro can accept the interlaced signal and then output 480p, which is what you see at 7:29 and 8:18 for the “2X Pro Component” Demos. The 2X Pro M can just pass it through, making it a good middle option for people that own consoles that can output 480p like the GameCube, Wii, and so on.
I’ve got two different comparison videos about those two devices. One with the 5X Pro running Composite and S-Video, and the newer one with the 5X Pro using Component Cables out of the GameCube. Link to that playlist here: ua-cam.com/play/PLWCN_tXkRcyBc5zIxQZ5Vcj1NnToD3CKV.html
I dont think we are looking at the same game footage your talking about. Im seeing smooth lines turned jagged and over sharp, color contrast bleeding over, choppier screen scrolling, textures losing filter effect, etc etc. So whats improved? You dont need fancy cables to darken the image. What your capturing and what you see on tv is different. In your capture it looks like composite is best cuz it has less detail loss from scaling interpolation.
If you think the original composite experience is better that is totally fine, to each is own. Products and settings of this nature and what is seen as best is subjective from person to person. Looking at the side by seen at 7:30 where it shows composite vs the new cables on the regular 2X Pro, I personally prefer the component experience due to the noticeable bump in clarity, but again, that is just my opinion. I do agree on the color for that example though; the 2X Pro and 2X Pro M seem to add a darker flavor, I noticed that for the first time when I compared the CARBY to the 2X Pro, the blacks were more inky on the 2X Pro. I feel like this is where the 5X Pro improves though, comparing it to the 2X Pro M shows the same bright colors that the original composite demo had, seen at 9:11 .
