Got a Sarod as a "permanent loan" which was not played for about 30 years. As I made an accurate viewing I saw that I would probably have to remove the metal plate to get access to the pegs for the 11 sympathetics strings for changing them. - Is that the way it has to be done? - Would be very happy if someone could help me :-)
No. Thats definetely not the way to do it. PLease dont touch the board at all!!!! I can guide you. it is a troublesome process but it is done from outside itself. You need a torch and a thicker string the PA string made into a kind of fish hook and then it takes five minutes.
There is no confirmation that Sarod or any combination there off came from central Asia . It is also believed this instrument dates back thousands of years and is depicted in Gupta dynesty coins and Verna was the precursor to sarod. Since it is played with edges of nails it makes me think of a polish violin-like instrument called Suka which also requires people press strings with nails.
He's explained it perfectly. ***** Well, in that case you should stop talking since over half the words in English are derived/borrowed from other languages. For over 2 centuries, the sarod has been a part of Hindustani music. Get your facts right.
History disagrees with you. Afghanistan was never apart of HiNduStaN. We Afghans did however invade and conquer India hundreds of times throughout our history.
Is Sarod a standard orchestral instrument as per Western standards ? He said that the instrument is tuned in C, does that mean he cannot play in other Keys? I know the violin, viola, cello, etc. are also monophonic instruments and their tunings fixed to one particular Key: - but the Westerners play every music written in all keys (without changing the tuning) and also modulates (key changes) within the same piece.
The sarod uses just intonation, so it would sound out of tune if the piece was in a different root key than the instrument is tuned to (C in this case). Western classical music instruments use equal tempered intonation, so they can play music in all keys.
When playing sarod solo, it does not matter what its tuned to. It can even be tuned to a frequency between c and C# e.g, as long as the playing strings are in tune to each other. I dont see why a sarod player would not be able to play different scales from different keys, some will just be harder than others
So wait a second.... 🤨 If playing the Sarod with the fingernail tips makes it sound just like a violin, viola, or violoncello's pizzicato.... Does that mean that playing an instrument from the violin family with your fingernail tips would make it sound like a sarod? 🤔 Would love to see someone try it! 💡
@@SAZIZMUSIC Thanks for the clarification. 📖 Perhaps a violin made out of steel would be able to mimic the sound. Or maybe if it at least had a metal fingerboard like a sarod. 🎻
At first I was like "He is playing with a plectrum, even I can do that." But then I noticed there are no frets and that he is playing by nails not fingertips 😶
He doesnt have to use only C. Many tune the second string (SA) to B also. PLus you can change the frequency of the basic C from 440 hz to anything else. I play my Sarod at 432 hz. Sounds sexier.

Derek G Having strong fingernails on your left hand is essential for playing the sarod, so many players use artificial nails like Amaan in this video.
