I don't even have a Sarod nor any plans to learn this instrument, but I'm hooked. This lecture series is fascinating, educative and transforming! Love the friendly, informal style of imparting invaluable knowledge!
Namaskar. I am interested to enter in the realm of music. But I am a novice and 28 years old. I live in Kolkata.Would you suggest me a Teacher in kolkata and tell me from where I will buy this instrument?
Great video Dr. Chakrborty however with all due respect rose and toon wood are not the same. Toon wood is really red cedar and rose wood falls into dalbergia family. The pegs are made of rose wood but not the body of the instrument itself. Also comparing Hemen with Stradivarious is a bit of a stretch :) Both Stradivarious and Guarneri spent their entire lifetimes in expermenting with their instruments with different wood/varnishes/dimensions trying to perfect their sound... while Mr Hemen sen remained mostly a skilled craftsman who hardly strayed from Ayet Ali Khans blue print. In terms of creativity and genius the two are not in the same league.
Are you trying to say that a sarod should cost as much as an acoustic guitar? Yes, I totally agree with your point that the cost of a sarod is on the higher end compared to that of a guitar, nevertheless, it is not really a good idea to compare the instruments. Not in terms of cost, or anything else.
For learning you can buy low cost sarod from Delhi, as you progress and attain mastery go for the costly one. The seasoning of wood, single piece wood, tonal quality, the technician who made it (for e.g. Heman Da from Calcutta) decides the cost of Sarod.
Guitars can be way more expensive depending on what was used to construct it and which luthier constructed it,the beauty is that our Indian instruments are so much more scientific and intricate in terms of acoustics and frequency spectrum.wish i had a teacher who showed me how to play sarod when i was starting as a musician.
