  • Nickelodeon All Stars Brawl 2 is hyping up the same characters as Nicktoons Unite 20 years ago, Fairly Oddparents is hurtling towards its 4th reboot, and Netflix is giving live action Avatar another shot. Why?

Baffling History is a series that takes a look at some of the oddest and most interesting stories about Disney and Theme Park History! My other series, History in Pi Minutes, is where I look at some popular topics and cover them in a bite size format.
Views are my own and do not represent the Walt Disney Company or its values.
Nicktoons Unite for the Playstation 2! play as characters like Jimmy Neutron and the one and only Danny Phantom fighting against villains like Vlad Plasmius!
Nickelodeon Allstar Brawl 2. A sequel to the Nicktoons Smash Brothers style party fighting game from 2021.
Watching this video on the leaks and hearing speculation on the roster for characters featured in this newest Nicktoons crossover I was kind of shocked. The big new characters were Jimmy Neutron and Danny Phantom. Who could team up to fight Vlad Plasmious.
The newest characters expected to be in the game are from the Loud House which premiered 7 years ago. The kids who were in the target demographic when it premiered are all in high school and college now. The Loud House has already had a spin off and a live action remake.
While I was working on this video, Nickelodeon All Star Brawl 2 was officially announced with a trailer that more or less confirmed all of this.
This led me to looking up the results of the most prestigious honor in all of Hollywood: The Kid’s Choice Award But for now, I want to focus on 2023’s winner for Favorite Kid’s TV Show: The Fairly Oddparents Fairly Odder
The second live action remake of the Fairly Oddparents. A show which ran for 16 years and had multiple soft reboots during its runtime including once back in 2006 where it was actually canceled only to be revived in 2008.
Fairly Odder is technically speaking not a remake, but more of a soft reboot sequel series taking the same premise of the original but starring the next generation. It followed Timmy Turner’s young cousin and her step brother who go on their own zany adventures with fairies Cosmo and Wanda.
It premiered on Paramount Plus in March of 2022. In January of 2023 it was removed entirely from all streaming services for the purposes of tax write offs and to avoid paying residuals to the actors and writers who worked on the show. Avatar the Last Airbender is also getting its own second live action remake premiering on Netflix next year. This was originally going to be created by the same showrunners of the original animated series. Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko left the production of the Netflix live action remake over creative differences. not long after they left it was revealed that Nickelodeon’s parent company ViacomCBS was creating avatar Studios with DiMartino and Konietzko at the helm. An entire studio just dedicated to spin offs and sequels of Avatar the Last Airbender.
What does that mean for future generations? Instead of having their own stories, will kids today grow up to just be nostalgic for my nostalgia? How can the entertainment industry grow if it is just caught in this time loop
I talked about the Dangers of Data Driven Entertainment before. How Netflix and other streaming services study their user’s viewing habit to an absurd degree and then use that data to decide what content to make. It started with Netflix
The problem is that letting data drive what you create has one inevitable end point. Especially now that every studio has the precise consumer micro-data that only streaming services can provide and letting that guide what gets greenlit has become the norm.
If you like this. You’ll probably like it again. And again. And again.
This will only get worse if Studios truly begin to use AI to inform creative decisions. Make no mistake, an AI guided Nickelodeon will result in unthinkable and unsustainable levels of Spongebob spinoffs, Avatar sequels, and Fairly Oddparents remakes if we don’t stop it.
That’s part of why the current Writer’s and Actors Guild strikes are so important. The studio executives are obsessed with the possibilities of fully computer and data driven creative landscapes and are seeking to push out the human touch as much as possible in order to maximize efficiency and synergy not realizing that a creative industry run like this will eat itself alive.

I agree. It is strange that Nickelodeon All Stall Brawl Lacks newer cartoons other that Loud House. The Harvey Beaks characters are absent, Middlemost Post is Absent, La Cassagrandes is absent, and It's Pony is absent.

There's a similar problem happening at Cartoon Network. The channel is dominated by Teen Titans Go and a spin-off of Bear Bears, with another spin-off of Craig of the Creek and Fosters Home on the way for younger kids, the newest thing coming is a revival of Tiny Toons, and Adventure Time is on its SECOND sequel series.
There are no new Cartoon Network stars, heck, even Adult Swim is airing earlier to showcase their older work in Checkered Past.

Oh that sounds rough. I was not as into Cartoon Network as a kid so I wound up cutting the part of the script about it to focus on the Nicktoons I have a more personal connection to. But even from just a quick glance it definitely looked like CN was having these same issues

Nice to see a Pi video essay about the dangers of chasing nostalgia and not trying out new things! Seriously we need new ideas for the next generations. We can't grow if we are stuck in the past. You are doing the right thing trying to bring attention to this! Thank you! :D

I think what annoys me about the Fairly Oddparents revival isn't that it's being revived again, (it's the equivalent of Death, Simpsons, and taxes) it's the timing.
Like, Fairly Odder just ended last year, this would be like if they rebooted the Powerpuff Girls again *immediately* after PPG2016. No breaks, no real announcement as to when it's coming out or why...just *throws Chemical X at wall.*

i guess i just got so used to stuff getting endlessly rebooted or spin-offed that I never actually realised we haven't had an original nicktoon in so long. That's actually kinda scary to think about.
Also I'm 100% backing you for getting the 2024 kids choice award

For sure! All Star Brawl 2 not having any characters who aren't nearly a decade old at least was just what made me realize the problem with Nick

I just find it weird that people complain about reboots or remakes, but whenever something new does end up coming out, they don't care to watch it. In a way, the viewers are to blame as to why the entertainment industry loves pumping out reboots or remakes. If a lot of people aren't tuning into new stuff, then why waste time making them ? Tbh, I don't really see anyone talking about Middlemost Post, Big Nate, It's Pony, or any of the other modern Nicktoons.

You are absolutely right and it is important to support original/creative shows if we want more original/creative shows! I was actually gonna talk about that but cut it because it felt too much like a tangent. But I think it's more complicated than that.
      1. Bluey is one of the most popular kid shows right now (possibly the most popular) and its an original idea
      2. You say you haven't heard anything about the new shows, but unless you're under 12 years old then you're probably talking about hearing about it online. Which means adults or teens at least. Which didn't used to be the target audience for Nicktoons, but with the shift to streaming and the increased desire to grow the audience and make more money, Nick has shifted more to reboots/remakes to try to get 20 somethings to talk about their shows and drive engagement. It's part of the problem.
      3. It's not sustainable. Reboots/remakes might be the better financial decision right now, but that's short term profit. It builds no foundation for the future and can only lead to the studio stagnating

@PiTheThemeParkGuy I want more original shows too, but complaining about reboots or remakes being made doesn't fix anything though. People just need to watch original stuff and pay reboots/remakes no mind. It's that simple. It just reminds me of when the cartoon community wouldn't shut up about how much they despise Teen Titans Go. They're pretty much the reason why the show hasn't gone anywhere. It's still kicking a decade later because people kept giving it life by making hate videos on UA-cam and discussing how much they hated it on other social media platforms.

Nah this is a good thing. Some short-lived shows might get another shot. I'm hoping for an El Tigre reboot.

    • @PiTheThemeParkGuy
      @PiTheThemeParkGuy  Рік тому +1

El Tigre getting a second shot would be great! I'm definitely not against reboots/remakes/spin offs especially when they get the chance to really take advantage of the missed opportunities of the original. A more serialized Danny Phantom would be a dream come true. I just feel like (Nearly every animation studio but especially) Nick has gone a little overboard with it at the expense of new or original ideas. Especially since there's a few specific shows they go back to again and again and again

I think all this is more of Nickelodeon's fault and not All-Star Brawl 2.
All-Star Brawl looks like a lot of fun.
I liked the first one and the sequel looks like it's gonna be even better.
Plus El Tigre got announced. That show never got represented in a Nickelodeon video game in a long time.
That said I do see what you're talkib about when it comes to nostalgia.

For sure. While I do think NASB2 could make a focused effort to include one or two more recent nicktoons, I don't blame the game. Learning about NASB2 is just what made me realize the issues with Nick not having hardly any original shows anymore

    • @knarrow0222

@@PiTheThemeParkGuy it's not just a Nickelodeon thing. Cartoon Network and Disney Channel have done this as well.
Cartoon Network has the Tiny Toon University cartoon and a Powerpuff girls revival (with the creator this time) is in the works. And Disney Channel has the Phineas and Ferb revival....which I won't lie, I'm excited for regardless cause I am a fan of Phineas and Ferb back in the day. Plus the creators are coming back to work on it. Whether those shows will be good or not we'll have to wait and see.

    • @PiTheThemeParkGuy
      @PiTheThemeParkGuy  Рік тому +1

@knarrow0222 true. But mixed in with those Disney Channel has a healthy mix of originals. Ghost & Molly McGee, Hamster & Gretel, Kiff, Haileys on it, etc. All currently airing and unless I'm mistaken fully original. Reboots, remakes, and revivals aren't a problem. Ducktales 2017 is one of my favorite recent cartoons and I am very excited for what Avatar Studios is gonna come up with. The problem is that it is very nearly the entirety of what Nick is doing. With Middlemost Post being the only currently airing fully original Nicktoon on the Network (technically Spongebob too, but that's kind of its own thing at this point)
Cartoon Network just doesn't have much of anything anymore as far as I can tell. But when I was writing the script and was going to compare networks, I believe Wikipedia had 5 currently airing shows on Cartoon Network with two being original (Craig of the Creek and Gumball). But Cartoon Network/Max/Adult Swim had so much going on with their programming lately that it could be it's own video lol
