  • I shot thisn two days following the tornado of August 28th, 1990. Its unedited. I hope to add footage to show changes that have taken place up to 2010. The high school that I graduated from in 1973 is shown destroyed, along with footage on James Street and Commercial Street. A very sad day that, oddly enough, put Plainfield on the map. I personally know several people who moved here after driving thru to survey the damage.

I drove a School Bus for Plainfield from 1984-1991. From '85-'90 I drove bus #24 & am glad you have footage of it, along with the other buses that were kept at the then Plaza Dr. location. Thanks for posting!

That was a strange and sad day. I was there four hours before the tornado hit and my son was born on the 27th the day before which was the same day Stevie Ray Vaughan died

I was 5 years old and lived not far away, I'll never forget the way the temperature dropped so fast or how the sky looked that day. The street lights came on at 2:30 in the afternoon and it looked like it was midnight in a matter of minutes

my moms friend was driving through that tornado and the tornado threw her car into the cemetery, then when she got out to her moms house during the tornado her mom kept yelling at her to go get their sister, even after she had been thrown into the cemetery. Now she's deathly afraid even of rain storms, she teaches college and the students say she leaves the room when it rains.

I worked at St. Joseph Hospital, working Surgical Intensive that particular day, and it will forever leave an unremovable memory in my head. The pain of loss that was all around....I have managed to forget alot of things in my old age, but not this day, or the few months after as well to be honest.

I was just down the road going to the high school as a teenager picking up a friend who was walking back to the school for us to pick them up. When we felt the SUV like it was going being lifted. We jumped out and ran for safety we had to hit the deck. We searched for our friend thru 8 hours of kaos they also hit the deck too! The sirens didnt go off till the tornado was 10 minutes on the ground. It wasnt going off when we left the SUV.. I remember it black and couldn't see it at all or where it was at. My dad rushed from St. Charles looking for me because he knew my friends and I were already there. He walked 10 plus miles because they stopped everyone. Boy we all looked like wet dogs gone wild but we made it out alive! Then 7 years later almost to the day. I moved to the out skirts of Plainfield/aurora after graduating and another tornado made an appearance across from my apartment building. It was unreal! My license plate says Skittn1 for a reason lol Sh*tting kittens to honor those who lost there lives that day.

I remember my work manager at the time telling me that she had looked at buying a home down there the day before. It was gone when she called about it. I was about 45 minutes north in West Chicago at the time the storm went through and I felt my ears pop at work! That was one seriously huge tornado.

This tornado has forever made me scared of severe weather. I was 8 going to a Joliet elementary school when this happened. My Mom's best friend and her 2 kids were hurt, but they survived. Good thing we didn't make it to her apartment on time or else we would've been hurt too 😳

I'm a Ham Radio operator. I remember this like it was yesterday. I, along with thousands of others, spent the next 11 days helping with relief efforts. Very little sleep... I was spending 8+ hours a day helping there, then going to work in Elk Grove Village at night. I almost lost my job when I called in to say that I wasn't going to be in for my night shift, because my boss didn't believe me. But up there in Elk Grove, it was sunny. There wasn't any Internet then, and we didn't have a radio at work so they hadn't heard the news yet. He thought I was lying. Only because my boyfriend at the time was a field supervisor and he was in the area and saw the devastation for himself was I able to keep my job. He fought for me. Had it not been for him, I probably would have been fired. PS... I lived in Plainfield at the time. I was also going to the mall when I heard of the storm. If I didn't peel off I-55 when I did, I would have driven straight into the path.

I was a freshman in high school at Wabonsie Valley High that day.. As I got on the bus I remember saying to a classmate, god the sky looks green.. Not to long after getting home the skies rolled dark and that was all she wrote.. I lived in Aurora at the time and it missed us by inches.. To this day you can still drive down Rt. 59 and see the reminders...

For what it's worth fujita rated it a 5 based on the cornfield next to rte30 saying it was some of the worst indications of strength he had seen to that point this tornado varied from f1-f-5 most if not all bldg damage was from f-3 to f-4 damage there was evidence of it being a very high end f-5 with wind of 300+ for a short time before Plainfield if it hit the populated area of Plainfield at its max strength you would have seen damage similar to Joplin or Moore this was a very violent tornado nonetheless

I remember there was a lot full of 1950s junk cars on rte 30 just past the junction where 126 merges. I went back there 2 weeks after and all that remained was a 1956 Buick and that was across the street. There had to be atleast 40 cars in that lot that got sucked up into that tornado.

If it hit the same area today the damage would have been far worse Plainfield and surroundings areas were mostly rural except for crest hill and Joliet from Oswego southeast to Plainfield then was very sparse population it was between Oswego and just before the Plainfield high school that this killer tornado was maxed out it weakened slightly when it hit the high school at a high end f-4 still very strong it also varied in width from 700 ft to a half mile wide multi vortex monster

Drive through plainfield alot. I was 2 when it hit and I'm from New Lenox; so we were safe. But even now my parents say they never felt such uncomfortable, sticky humidity as they did that day.
Still weirds me out sometimes driving around 59 when I see videos/pictures of what happened. Crazy storm.. A very historic one at that.

I know that they say this tornado was EF-5, but the damage I've seen shows EF-4 or EF-3. Usually an EF-5 levels everything to the ground and massively de-barks trees, wraps cars around trees, picks up concrete parking stops and throws them a mile away. This didn't show me any of that. In fact, a lot of the houses and buildings were still mostly standing. That's just my observation. If you want to see EF-5 damage, look at Moore, OK 2013, Joplin,MS 2011, Jarrell,TX -- now that was EF-5 damage, this wasn't even close. Sorry, but this "is not EF-5 damage".
