Yeah, I've never been interested in the general discussion around Sports, especially because I live in the US and my dad, as a psychology Professor, is generally against the way injuries are discussed in American football. But I love the way John talks about AFC Wimbledon as a community, and I started to open up to a more complex idea of sports and fans of sports teams.

A stadium is a stadium. But my heart believes that it matters, and I love that this channel, and this community, are so consistently firm in their convictions that yes, it DOES matter. It matters that the stadium is in Plough Lane. It matters that humans can learn the geological composition of Mars. It matters that we care about each other, and try to make the world a better place. It makes Nerdfighteria feel like home.

Anthropocene reviewed was (one of) the third thing in my relationship.
Every week we would have to travel and we'd listen to it at our car and it would take us two or three one-hour trips to finish a single podcast, because we would pause and talk about what we thought and how we felt about what you were saying. We'd go on endless tangents and we'd learn so much about ourselves and how we perceive the world.
Now we've been stuck at home for almost six months and driving to São Paulo listening to anthropocene reviewed with my girlfriend is one of the things I miss most about the pre covid life.

I’m an actress in New York City and this sentiment really rings true for a lot of us right now. Our entire industry has been shut down, we are being offered no assistance, and our government has told us that we should just “try something else.” Many of us were already working “something else” jobs (commonly in hospitality/service industries) when the pandemic began, and many of us lost those jobs as well. Arts & Culture is a multi-billion dollar industry and we’re being told we’re unimportant and unnecessary, all the while there is a surge in demand for content because everyone is at home bored. Our “third thing” has become something totally unrecognizable, but I could not be more proud of my community for rising to the occasion and continuing to make art in new and beautiful ways!

Alana Demaske “The Great Good Place” is a book specifically on third places by Ray Oldenburg who was the sociologist who actually coined the term “third place”. Also, because creating those places can have a lot to do with zoning & resource allocation, “The Color of Law” is a really great book to read that kind of dives into some of the reasons why the American landscape looks the way it does and why changing that is complicated and difficult to do!

There's something so wonderfully bittersweet about the lyrics "show me the way to Plough Lane, I'm tired and I want to go home". We all have those little places that may not mean a lot to anyone other than use but those things mean HOME, you're here, you're safe and everything is okay if even for a short time. It could be anything from your favourite song to a cup of tea or a friendship that has lasted years. For AFC fans to not have a "home" for so long because of corporate greed saddens me but knowing that at last they do, at last all the fans and the players have a place where they can plant their flag and sing their songs, cheer and weep THAT is something that makes my heart happy.

My grandparents’ third thing is a town called Rugby in Tennessee. When they got married about thirty years ago, they discovered this tiny town on the Cumberland Plateau and made it a second home. They go every weekend if they can and hold different positions there. Their church and friends are there. A film with them in it plays in the theater there. Because of their love for it, I grew up loving it. I volunteer there because I love it and want to spread my love for it. If you have the ability, please look up Historic Rugby. Though a town favorite burned down this weekend and it’ll take a lot out of us, my family and everyone else who loves Rugby won’t give up on it. This weekend, we held an Irish Road Bowling tournament so we could all gather and be together to celebrate. We even retrieved our trophy out of the burnt Harrow Road Cafe.

From the first frame of this video, I was in tears. Seeing the boxes in the corner instantly and unexpectedly sparked some thing of nostalgia and giddiness inside me that made me pause.
The Anthropocene Reviewed has been such a light for me in these past few months, and this book feels like such a generous and profound act of kindness.
I have been working in pediatric intensive care for the past year, which has come with its inherent stresses but with the added global crisis and my own mental health challenges, I have been looking for outlets and inspiration to practice gratitude. This podcast and book gave me so much of that. And your review of “Googling Strangers” absolutely broke me.

Over the summer my best friend got me into watching Formula 1 racing. I've never been into motor sports (not a car person) but even so, the announcement of the end of the Williams team as the last family owned racing team as well as Pierre Gasly's Grand Prix win in Italy has made me feel more emotions in the last week than I've felt this entire pandemic. The idea that I don't really care cars or racing but actually rather enjoy sharing a "3rd object" with someone I care deeply about, is really quite lovely.

I feel like the third thing not only enables deepenings of relationships, but also initiations of them. For example, by finding someone new that I discover I share a third thing with (such as Nerdfighteria), this almost magically give us something in common from the beginning, a sort of foundation to create a "we" going forward. I am deeply grateful to you, John, for creating several such third things for a great many people - people who might not have found eachothers were it not for the third things of your making.

I grew up a few miles from Wimbledon and used to cycle past the dog track (which was formally the stadium) every day for several years. I cycled down plow lane thousands of times and it seems so odd and yet so familiar having you explain this to me. I vaguely knew the story about MK Dons and AFC Wimbledon, having been told it in passing but you and I share an awkward puzzlement about sports that kept me detached from it. Now I see it all in a new light.

This rings really true! Third things seem very essential to all sorts of relationships. Third things can be hikes, walks, lunch, coffee, movies, video games. We as people kind of need third things to hang out. I only have one friend who just invites me over to do nothing, but talk and she is one of my all time favorite people for it. I love that she does it, because there’s almost an undercurrent of acknowledgment that like hey you are enough, I like you, even though we do third things like get food or go for walks top it’s refreshing to just sit and talk sometimes.

I just graduated from university and my thesis (dissertation) primarily dealt with how people gain and develop identity through sport. Whilst I understand that sports may not be everyone's cup of tea and may not seem to be important, but regardless of whether you're into sports, movies, novels, travelling or anything else, it's these experiences that makes us who we are and make our lives so much more enjoyable. Sometimes the things that matter the least in a weird way matter the most

It reminds of what Jacob Goldstein said in “Dear Hank and John” about whether he calls himself an author or journalist now that his book is out:
“For me the important thing isn’t the sorta identity “what am I” thing, but rather just....finding people who know how to do the work I’m doing, who are struggling with similar things, who I can talk to NOT in great big abstract ways, but in really specific ways...and people who have worked on those kinds of things and can make help me solve them, THOSE are my REAL people, my REAL “talk to about work” people.
And so Campbell, I hope you can find people who are in some way kind of doing the work you’re doing, and talk with them about your work, I feel like that’s the most promising place to look”
Edit: His book is “Money: The True Story of a Made-Up Thing”

And I forgot about that. Until recently someone accidentally turned my reading mode off. I didn't notice the usefulness of that reading mode until it was gone. Similarly in my love life once I totally forgot what are those things that bind us together only remembered that there is only us, in our together. Until it's your novel that showed, how important that third thing was.
