That is so true. I downsized and threw away 2 tons of junk accumulated over a quarter century. What a waste of money. Now I still have things to donate and I don't shop for stuff anymore. Only essentials.

"Activities that are seemingly mundane, become precious." As a child I remember my bff's Mom, folding the laundry with such grace that the simple act of folding laundry looked so incredibly beautiful and loving. I still think about it and have told her how much that moved me as a child and that I wished some day I would be able to move through my chores with that kind of perfect elegance. Thanks for sparking that memory for me again..

@LJ H my kids think they are doing me a favor if they wash my dishes or do my laundry, bless them, they mean well!
I LOVE doing the dishes. Watching my bunnies out the window with their babies is ENDLESS entertainment. I giggle and laugh and its a great blessing.
Laundry also. There is just something very soothing about heating the water over firewood, scrubbing the clothes on an ancient plank. Hanging the clothes on the line "just so" so that there are minimal wrinkles or marks.
So proud of my bright whites. A sense of accomplishment and graditude . Its my favorite thing to do other than cooking ♡
Cooking makes me so excited. Like I'm a mad scientist lol
I'm always laughing and whooping and hollering and thinking up new tweaks. Truly my passion. I have workers who call me Mama and say really I don't need to pay them just PLEASE FEED THEM 😜

Those are the things I try to do. For simple tasks such as folding laundry, washing dishes, such things that you do everyday that allow you to kinda slip away. It's so beautiful. (I know most people have to do it kinda hurried cause we all are busy, but just to pick one thing a day you can focus on and block everything else out can really change your outlook

Awesome , the same thing has been happening in the USA to some extent.
Where some middle class families have been moving out of cities and into the countryside and/ or wilderness and living more simple and sustainable lifestyles on either small farms or homesteads, just like in the old West and frontier pioneer days of the 19th century. I definitely think that’s really cool how those people are living with nature and in nature, I wish everyone could live more simple and sustainable lives like that. It would be a lot better for the planet and humanity

It had such a calming effect.

started my own journey to (some sort of) minimalism about a month ago. Did a huge declutter of my room--nearly 12 years worth of things I never use or need--and got rid of 6 big bags of stuff to be donated or recycled. Next step is my wardrobe, then my beauty products, etc. It's a slow journey but I'm gonna get there eventually! Watching your channel really helps, so thank you!

    • @barrysa04
      @barrysa04 5 років тому +5

Claire Boxwell Well dont Claire , I am the same and 3 years on, I’m still decluttering and reducing . With cosmetics , make sure to use them up. Energy went into producing them, dumping them , just wastes that energy . So while I buy so much less, I still have lots of stuff because I am constantly using up bits around the house . I found pouring a half empty bottle of a cosmetic into another bottle , made me feel at least like I was decluttering and that in time , I’d use up those bottles too. I had some full bottles that I donated to a women’s shelter and gave to friends to use up. I also keep things I know are useful. So for instance I’ll be moving house next year . In work we got a delivery with lots of bubble wrap. I collected it up because I knew I could use it and when I’ve moved . I’ll donate it to someone else to reuse and hopefully it will continue. Use apps like BUNZ or Yahoo groups like Freecycle or websites like Gumtree and Craigslist to get rid of stuff . I donated old linen and towels and blankets to a shelter (Ring them first to ask if they take them) , the ones that were very warn out I gave to a dogs home (again I emailed before dropping them off ). Just some tips

At one time I had four part time jobs as a nurse and was a single mother. This meant I had maybe 4 days a month off. I look back now and wonder how on earth I did that. All in the name of making money because that is what we are taught to do. I spent way more money on stuff back then for my kids to make up for my absence I guess. Now I am retired and enjoy a much simpler life thankfully. I look back at money and time wasted that I can't get back. Hope to instill these lessons to my now adult children and my grandchildren. Life should be happy and simple for all. This channel reminds us of that. Thank you Niamh for showing us how.

I grew up in a very old village, playing with my friends in the fields and would spend hours just lying on the grass enjoying 'existing' and it was a beautiful time. In 2013 I got what i thought was my dream job as a mechanic, it was a time of fighting, stress, arguments, and just pure hell. Those 2 years alone undid my entire childhood of peace and mindfulness. Now I'm out, I'm trying to beat my anxiety and stress and go back to how I was by living simply, and going back to my routes. This video just convinces me that I can feel that way again 😊

My parents were the generation who would “make do and mend”, grew all their own vegetables, bought food from individual shops not supermarkets. Some of my happiest memories were blackberry picking and making into jam and pies, we would take a picnic and spend the whole day there. They just didn’t buy very much at all, we didn’t have heating or hot water until I was a teenager but we thrived and were never happier or healthier. It doesn’t seem so easy today, there is so much pressure to buy and consume, I try to grow as many vegetables as I can, buy food with no packaging, go to the market. If we need anything we always go to second hand websites, thrift shops, car boots. We all need to try and up cycle, mend and re use and I think this would make a difference no matter how small. I love your videos and the message they bring❤️

When I was a child my mother made our clothes, our toys and cooked the food. It was hard work because there were 10 of us and the war had left very little in the shops. We loved our food, I can even remember the taste of some things. Today it is all piled high in the supermarkets but there is no taste to it. It’s time to go back to having less but better food, to having clothes that are of better quality instead of off the peg at low prices. To lead a less consumer life and enjoy to simpler life.

Walking in nature is one of the most simple yet rewarding things one can do. Fresh clean air, varied sounds of life greeting the day, the sun rising and shining as well as gathering beautiful thoughts of thankfulness at life. What more could one wish for. Bird songs, gentle breezes....there's so much to absorb. Thanks for this beautiful 'simplistic way of life'.

Long ago, maybe 15 years now, I had a dream - a 'character' who is one of my archetypes that I've always called 'Prairie Girl' -- was in the dream, in a very simple room, with the door opened onto a Nebraska prairie view (beautiful alfalfa grasses). I also was in the room, and rather … spluttering and confused and frantic, pacing, and talking to her as she quietly stood looking out at the view … ultimately, after listening closely to me, she said, "I don't know how to be 'wanting'." And she gestured to the scene outside, and the sunrays coming into the room we stood in. That dream changed everything about my perspective. I've never forgotten that sentence - 'I don't know how to be wanting." I feel like this video (and many many others of yours) expresses something along those same lines, and reiterates and sounds down that outlook. so so soul-satisfying. (P.S. Another channel you might really love, which I've only just yesterday discovered: Girl in Calico").

Thank you for sharing that. Prairie Girl as archetype intrigues me. What else has she told you? I'd love to see the Nebraska prairie at some point. I grew up in Alberta and I really miss the prairies a lot. Living in a Pacific NW rainforest is so very different. Pleasing in other ways, but often lacking in space: wide open skies and endless horizons. Plus the light. And the way the wind moves the grasses. So precious. Thanks again :)
