The naïve art of Henri "Le Douanier" Rousseau

In today’s episode, we take a look at self-taught painter, Henri “Le Douanier” Rousseau. The most famous of the naïve artists, Henri Rousseau started to paint later in life and worked really hard to be taken seriously as a painter and to belong among the artists of his era. Instead, he won the appreciation and respect of the new generation of avant-garde of painters and writers, because he had the force and audacity that they were looking for with their work, in order to make room for the new big ideas that were reshaping society. Today, Henri Rousseau’s work is exhibited in some of the most prestigious museums and galleries in the world, alongside the greatest names of his era.
