When my brother and I were kids, we would spend a week with my aunt and uncle in Chicago each summer (we lived in Michigan). On August 1, 1979, they took us to this game at Comiskey Park. We were stunned to hear about Thurman Munson's death the very next day...
My Dad worked security at Comiskey- he walked Munson to the bus after the game, I believe he left the game early for some reason. Anyway, not known for signing autographs, my Dad asked him to sign a ball for me. He did. I still have the ball in a locked glass cabinet on my wall.
My father played pony league ball and was best friends with Kevin Bell. He played for the Chicago White Sox from 1976 to 1980. Me and my brother met him during a game when we were kids and we took a picture with him in the field.
Those White Sox uniforms were so Awesome. Really went well at old Comisky. They should add these to their throwbacks. Remember this period. Munson meant so much to the Yankees, and when he left us, it took awhile for the Yankees to recover. I wonder if they had Munson, maybe the Yankees win the World Series in 1980 and '81.
In 1980..the Yankees..won 102 games. The Orioles won 100 games. And didn't go to the play oof. Kc won 95.or 96. The Yankees have been beating kc royals ass for years. 76 77.78..in 1980 the universe.change the royals grew up and mature. They was not the same team as the the late 70 s. ...they didn't keep making the same mistake that cost. Them the play oof in yesteryears. Not taking.away from Thurman munson.with him.or with out him the Yankees would have got that ass whip why because it was time for the royals to win and they they matured. The Yankees had a better team in 1980. Then what they had in the 70s in my opinion but however yes the royals was in a weaker divsion during that time but the royals was better two and more consistent in the deep depth and they had a winning record against the Yankees all season long and the dodgers. Change to in.81 like wise
@@karltrafton7547 I have to disagree. No excuses, but the Yanks had a ton of injuries in '79, not to mention losing Munson (their Captain, heart & soul) permanently. With the teams' collective performance in '80 and '81, having Munson instead of Naaron, Cerone , etc. would have ONLY helped. His playoff performances alone were already legend... And his absence was one of the more major differences for KC to have to face in '80. There's no reason to think his presence would have hurt the team. (I say this with respect to Rick Cerone. He filled in quite well, circumstances considered. But Munson is in the same extended breath as Bench, Campy, Fisk-if you will-. Cerone isn't.)
I love those Sox uniforms. As 4 Munson it was no coincidence that when he died that chamoionship attitude the Yanks had kinda went with it. He was their rock
When I found out Thurman Munson was killed, I cried like a little kid. I was just four years old and thought the news reporter said Herman Munster died.
Thurman Munson would have had many more great years and Seasons had his life not been tragically cut short in that unfortunate plane crash back home in Ohio that would take and end his Life!!!😭🙏
Used to play statomatic baseball with my friend John Robert's. He loved the Yankees my team was the Redsox. We had a rivalry for years. We also played the m's season. It was pretty cool Tacoma had the Yankees AAA team for a year too.
Back in the days where the players looked like real men and acted like adults. Not like today's gen z players that jump up and down celebrating a win in May like it was the world series. And that includes my NY Yankees.
Bobby Murcer hit a homer to honor his friend the first game back after Munson died. There was talking of putting him in the HOF but he didn't have the longevity.
As a long time Phillies fan, I find it hard to believe that Scott Rolen is in the HOF and a legend like Munson is not. He played long enough as far as I'm concerned.
Damn it's been nearly 40 years! The time flew by! Notice guy's back in those days had NO Tattoos, and left the Gold and Bling at home, and they looked weaker and smaller than guys today, RIP Munson....
Trading Rivers made no sense. More attention should have been on Thurman mastering a difficult plane for a novice. I'm still sick about it. A pilot and plane could have been provided to keep him in New York. The loss to his family is un measureable.
Lets see baseball player who never flew a airplane decides to buy a small jet so he can fly back to Ohio after playing in New York. Anyone would say because of lack of flying experience that would be a bad ideal and it was.
He was a trained and licensed pilot. But he was apparently too fatigued to be flying on the day that he died (even if it was just practicing take-offs and landings) and he forgot several crucial steps, including lowering his flaps (which may have prevented the crash entirely) and wearing his seatbelt (which probably would have prevented his neck from being broken in the crash and allowed him to escape, as his passengers did.)

Love those sox unis
You notice Munson was playing first not catching. I guess his knees was in so much pain he couldn't crouch down to catch. RIP Thurman 🙏🙏🙏

Munson hit .357 in 30 post-season games.
Thurman Munson was a wonderful catcher. He helped yankee pitchers all the way till his tragic death
Thank you for posting this game.
But I ask that you please correct the spelling of Thurman Munson's name in the title.

Oh did this then 9 year old cry when he passed.....................
Every comment jimmy piersall makes would get him kicked out of baseball today lol
Exactly! Haha.. but the things he says are so off the wall funny sometimes.
He played to the Neo-Nazi Southside crowd.
Miss you Cap 15 ⚾⚾⚾⚾⚾
anyone besides me feel a little creeped out seeing the Clemente commercial during the rebroadcast?
I was there!
Around the 44min mark guy fouls one off, before the next pitch harry says the count is 1 ball no strikes. Harry in fine form lol
I bled Dodger blue, practically grew up in Dodger Stadium. Hated the Yankees. Cried like a baby when I heard about the crash. Go figure.
I'm a Phillies fan and I cannot get over the fact that Scott Rolen is in The HOF and Steve Garvey isn't.

Munson should be in the Hall of Fame.

@I don't think so Yes. But, Steve Garvey isn't and neither are Lee May, Bobby Abreau, Sal Bando, Dave Parker, AL Oliver, etc..
I didnt reconanize Ken Kravec until he put a man a base. He seemed most of the time pitching from the stertch 😅😅😅

As a kansas city fan I was sad when the yankees won the al playoffs 3 straight times 76 77 78. I graduated high school inb78 here in missouri

kellie johnson nope! They looked trimmed and fit, equipped for baseball, no steroids
They couldn't afford gold and bling on those salaries.
This was aired in late September or October 1994.
You spelled "Thurman" Munson wrong in the title
I can hear Yogi now ... "I got out of his way and he ran right into me ..."
Who was #12 on the Yanks?
Jim Spencer LOL
I watched it on tv.
None better than Carey and Piersall
They brought the Sox a down-to-earth feeling of community that hasn't existed since.
Etienne Scarbinski how about ernie harwell and paul carey
Well, the best besides Phil Rizzuto, Frank Messer, and Bill White on the NY network for this game.
Piersall was from Waterbury Connecticut. I do remember that there was a lot about him in our local papers when he died.
none better at drinking and slurring like 2 idiots.. Pathetic announcers
THURMAN not Thurmon
Chet Lemon probably was traded from the Sox for those divings in first base
