Thank you! I just bought a long roll of zipper tape for use in outdoor bench cushions and I had no idea how to attach the zipper pull. Your video was concise and easy to understand. I’m ready to sew and ready to go.
@@SallieTomato sorry, I meant to ask how do you sew over the zipper teeth if they are metal before you cut it? You mentioned in the video that those teeth are nylon and are okay to sew over carefully, but I wasn't sure if the case was the same for metal ones. Thank you for replying!
I think I may have missed it but did you show how to insert a pull into a zipper that doesn't have the extra fabric strips at the beginning to the zipper?
I have a question I hope Sallie (or someone here) can answer. What is the purpose for sewing two lines at the end of the zipper? Once you cut in between the stitching lines, don't you have to cut off the stitching from what is left on your roll in order to start a new zipper?
that then becomes the ending of your next zip, as Sallie put on the pull and took it to the end she will also do that for the next zip she makes takinging it instead to the stitched line which is her new ending xx
Some zippers by the yard are easy to get those pulls on others not always as easy. However I seem to manage. Today I was making custom sized zippers for my RV reupholstery work. I had to arm bolsters precut and made. I was making one out of 4 zippers for four dinette cushions when WHAT? For the first time in all my years of using zipper by the yard. Get this folks over 40 years. Forty yeas ago the choices were no where near this amazing. But that's another story. I love zippers by the yard. And so on with my tale. See how Sallie demonstrates the back side of the zipper tape has a double row of stitching down each side towards the middle as she tells you that's the stitching that holds the zipper coil to the tape by the manufacturing process. Well I discovered today more than half my zipper by the yard had one sometimes no stitching on one side of the back while the other side of the coil had the double row. I consider myself lucky that I hadn't sewn any actual projects or cushions but was about to. I now have enough tape for one large seat cushion and the two arm cushions. Even though I have added the pulls to the arm cushions I am not going to use them because both are missing at least one stitch down one side that holds the coil in place. I inspected the tape that has the double twin rows of stitching and have just enough to cut the arm pieces again and make one successful seat cushion. I am convinced this is good tape and won't at some time later come apart. The arm bolster zippers I made one looks like the zipper holds but finding about every few inches there's places on the other and a long run of the other tape I haven't cut where the coil isn't caught at all makes me too nervous to go ahead with it. My husbands like so use some of your other zipper tape. As in YOU HAVE ENOUGH you must have something that would work. Will yes and NO. I am doing a slight design variation for the cushions. Making what's called a foating side over lap to a zipper meet in middle side. And that means part of the zipper will be exposed on the side of the seats. I am doing this for two reasons. One it allows me to work in the foam and poly seats which are quite firm without having to use a vacuum as the zipper goes around part of the sides not just down the back of the seat. Since I like this style I thought I'd take advantage and add some embellishment and whimsy too. I'm nodding a little towards Harry Potter. It's subdued nothing over the top mind you but I've got some adorable dragon charms that I will attach to silver zipper pulls and they will hang along the sides of the seat cushions exposed. Because it's a floating side I have the option to tuck them totally out of view too and just leave the silver teeth exposed. The fabric is a marine light grey. My zippers chosen were perfectly matched with the fabric. So it's been almost a year since I ordered. Not from Sallie but elsewhere. I can't return. I did return and correct my 5 star review previously to 1 star. Again this is a fluke but tells me I need to spend time on every order going forth to check the zipper and look for those twin double rows of stitching on the back side of the zipper. Thank you sally for your video. There's others people for when your tape no longer has the lovely no coil to get a pull started. Also how to bring two zippers together as Sallie discussed like luggage. I am doing that with my seat cushions. That means I can opt to show the charms or not. I love options when they are presented. Some people have a knack for zipper by the yard. They make teeth zippers too by the yard and other sizes of coil and teeth like #3 , #5 my favorite, bt there's 7 and all the way to into the teens. My husband's size 12 grey tooth plastic YKK zipper he made his customized back pack out of 50 years ago is still like new on it. The pack is still hanging in well too. He likes tooth and I like coil but the job often dictates which we choose and what size too. I think there's also 3.5 size. So I find most times a #5 works across the board for me where as the #3 is a little too delicate for my heavy duty style projects and purses and bags. This works well if you like me want to collect mixes of coil colors and tape colors and pull colors. I do and so staying primarily with one size and one style means my rainbow teddy bear pulls are going to mate with any of my rainbow coil tapes no matter the color of the tape. And the same with silver gold, gunmetal, black, rose gold, and so on. Happy sewing everyone. Check those tapes when they arrive to insure if there is a problem you can return within the return period.
Yes! We have several helpful suggestions as sometimes it takes a little practice, getting both sides of the zipper tape to feed evenly into the zipper pull. Here are a couple tips, that we hope are helpful: --The size #5 zippers (larger coil and zipper pulls) can be a little easier than the size #3 zippers (smaller coil and zipper pulls). --Don't be discouraged! There are times when it takes us a few tries to get the opposite sides of the zipper tape even too! Before you add a zipper pull and the zipper coil is zipped together and straight, take a look at the end you're going to add the pull on to. Observe which half of the little coils is closest to you (or "first in line"); that would be the side of the zipper tape that we would feed into the zipper pull just slightly ahead of the remaining zipper tape. --Also, sometimes the first 'loop(s)' in the zipper coil doesn't feed into the zipper pull right away--a little nudge of your fingernail along the outer edge of the coil can direct it into the zipper pull. This helps start the coil halves going into the zipper pull simultaneously. --You can always try adding the zipper pull on the opposite end of the zipper tape. One of the advantages of Sallie Tomato Zippers by the Yard is the pulls can be added from either end.
The video is extremely helpful. Thank you! I’m having trouble finding the downloadable, printable tutorial. In looking at both the given link and the freebie section on your website I find only the beginning of the tutorial.

Great question! The size of the zipper is determined by the width of the coil in millimeters. For example, size #5 is a 5mm wide coil. :) Happy sewing!
thanks for the video, i just bought a pack of these but haven't had a chance to use them yet! question: when you slide the zipper pull down to the opposite end (3:28), the zipper is separated behind the pull and closed in front of the pull (the pull is opening the zipper tape). but when you get to the other end at 3:32, the area behind the zipper pull is closed, and so is the small area in front of it. maybe i'm just missing something obvious but... how do you do this? i'd love to know because the zips are easier to sew in when they are closed on both ends
Hi Hayden - You caught my oops! I tried to cut that part out of the video. When you put the pull on, the zipper will be closed. When you zip it all the way to the opposite end, it will still be closed. (In the video, I forgot that I already zipped it down to the opposite end.) But don't worry, your zipper will be closed. Yes, it is much easier to sew in when both ends are closed. I hope this helps!
Interesting video. Can zippers by the yard be used as both separating or invisible zippers? Also, one common problem of sewing in zippers into garments is sewing past the pull. When using zippers by the yard, can the pull be inserted in the zipper after the required length of zipper tape has been sewn onto the garment?
Thankyou for your video, well done! Im making a sleep sack for my daughter and it will be my first experience with zippers. Are zipper stops a more sure alternative than a stitch line or does it matter? If so, how do you affix them?
Thanks for commenting! You would create your own "stopper" for the zipper when you reach the desired length of zipper you would need. Let us know if this helps!
@@barefacedquestions This will depend upon your project and how the zipper is inserted or if part of the zipper is left out. Help! I purchased zipper tape from a store that the owner passed away. No one knew anything and p bought it anyway. I cannot get the zipper head to slide on. It’s been cut both ends. I didn’t think it would be a big deal. Can you tell me how to get it to work? Thanks!
We have a very helpful tool called the Zipper Jig available for purchase on our site: it makes it so easy to slide a pull on. Here's the link for it: sallietomato.com/blogs/blog/attach-your-zipper-pulls-like-a-pro
Thank you for commenting! Not all bulk zippers have the fabric lead and that's ok. You're still able to add zipper pulls without the fabric lead, it just takes a little practice. Sometimes the teeth don't feed into the pull right away, try gently coaxing the coils to the center a little; they sometimes get hung up on the outer edges of the zipper pull channels. And there's the Gypsy Zipper Jig that helps. You can find this great product here: sallietomato.com/products/gypsy-quilter-zipper-jig
Thank you for commenting and asking your question! Right now we don't have the appropriate hardware to convert the bulk zipper tape into separating zippers.
Sally how about the pin that zipper slide onto teeth..as in a jacket zipper that opens at bottom...and where do you buy these pins; and how do you install pins??

I think that's why you need to sew the back stitch on the marked line. This keeps the zipper shut. If you look at pouches or bags with zippers, there is no stopper because the fabrics you sew the zipper to will prevent it from open unintentionally.
Thank you for your question. When you apply the zipper pull you need to separate the zipper. Then you feed it through the zipper pull which causes the zipper to close. If you have any more concerns, please email us at info@sallietomato.com. Happy Sewing!!
At 3:36 you slide the zipper pull to the opposite end of the zipper, and it opens as it goes. However, once you get down to the other end, the zipper is closed. How is that?
Hi there! Unfortunately, with zippers by the yard, both ends need to be sewn into a seam. It's very difficult to put the metal stops on. I do not sell a kit to make separating zippers.

Why is your “Butler Method” called that? Amy Butler does not sew down the zipper ends, she pulls the tape out with forceps instead. Too many people are naming different techniques the Butler Method. Check with Amy on this.
Unless, Sally went and changed this video, she never mentioned the "Butler's Method". She didn't talk about sewing a zipper on by using the Butler Method. Instead, this tutorial was a fantastic job at explaining how to set up zippers that are sold by the yardage.
Thank you for commenting! Most of the zipper lengths we use for samples have no extra guiding fabric, so we use the Gypsy Zipper Jig often. You can find this great product here: sallietomato.com/products/gypsy-quilter-zipper-jig

I have a question I hope Sallie (or someone here) can answer. What is the purpose for sewing two lines at the end of the zipper? Once you cut in between the stitching lines, don't you have to cut off the stitching from what is left on your roll in order to start a new zipper?

If I wanted to put a zip into a skirt how would I stop the pull from coming off at the open end?
Yes, I am wondering the same thing, only for a zipper in a coat. What stops the pull from coming off at the top when zippered up?
Your seam would stop it at the top
You would need to sew over the edge of one side to "lock it" as you are inserting it into the skirt. We have seen our zippers used this way.

How can I use zipper tape, for a jacket, to make a zipper that completely opens from the top down, but also opens from the bottom up?
Submit your question you info@sallietomato.com and someone will reach back out to you with a detailed response!
This is wonderful!! Thanks.
What about making single opening zippers?
Can you please let me know what you are referring to-thank you
I would have liked it if you made the second one so we can see how you make the lead or finish the zipper at the top so zippers head doesn't come off.
Thank you for commenting and letting us know for the next tutorial demo.
Can you show putting the pull onto the zipper without the fabric on the end? This I find very hard to do.
Yes! We have a video here: ua-cam.com/video/I_Wd6Bq4Vf0/v-deo.html
can bulk zipper be used a s a separating zipper? thx
Thank you for commenting and asking your question! Right now we don't have the appropriate hardware to convert the bulk zipper tape into separating zippers.
Is there a tutorial on making separating zippers by the yard?
If you head to our channel then search for "zipper", that may bring up the results that you need!
It looks like there is only one “non-coil” area, because that’s the way you instructed. How do you add zipper heads after the first end ?
We recommend putting all the pulls on the 3 yard segment first, then sliding down the ones you need and cutting off the strip.
Sally how about the pin that zipper slide onto teeth..as in a jacket zipper that opens at bottom...and where do you buy these pins; and how do you install pins??
I'm sorry but I don't have a tutorial for this! You'd need to purchase a metal zipper stop kit.
so what do we do if we don't have a fabric end? dang, it's hard to put on the pull!
Thank you for commenting and asking your question! The Gypsy Zipper Jig is really helpful when there's no fabric extension. You can find it here: sallietomato.com/products/gypsy-quilter-zipper-jig
Im curious do you think a staple could de used to end the zipper?
Might not be heavy enough if a regular office stapler. And you can buy zipper stops, both top and bottom.
The zipper by the yard that I am using does not have the cloth beginning. How do I put the zipper pull directly on to the zipper nylon teeth?

Dang that machine is quiet! Thanks for the tutorial!
You're welcome, thank you for watching!
Your top is so cute! Where's it from?
Thank you! I got it from TJ Maxx
How do i do the next zipper then?
When you are ready to start a new zipper, you will just the follow the same steps. If you have problems with attaching the zipper pull, we've got you covered. Watch our tutorial "Add Zipper Pull on Raw End of Tape. ua-cam.com/video/I_Wd6Bq4Vf0/v-deo.html
When putting the pull on the tape I cannot get it slid down to the other end. It seems the coils do not match up correctly. How do I correct this?
A zipper jig is very helpful that we sell.
Thank you!
You're welcome!
I got an error message when i clicked on the link for the tutorial! Where can I find it?
It has been updated!
There is a missing step... how it is that the zip is totally closed after you pulled it till the end?
I think that's why you need to sew the back stitch on the marked line. This keeps the zipper shut. If you look at pouches or bags with zippers, there is no stopper because the fabrics you sew the zipper to will prevent it from open unintentionally.
Thank you for your question. When you apply the zipper pull you need to separate the zipper. Then you feed it through the zipper pull which causes the zipper to close. If you have any more concerns, please email us at info@sallietomato.com. Happy Sewing!!
Can you put a zipper pull on back first?
Yes, to make a double slide zipper you can do that. Here's a video to show you that technique: ua-cam.com/video/di4PegpugjE/v-deo.html
At 3:36 you slide the zipper pull to the opposite end of the zipper, and it opens as it goes. However, once you get down to the other end, the zipper is closed. How is that?
Just do it again from the same side that you just entered, and the teeth will be together this time through. :)
@@SallieTomato Thank you.
How to put starters on? Like if it where a 2way jacket zipper?
Hi there! Unfortunately, with zippers by the yard, both ends need to be sewn into a seam. It's very difficult to put the metal stops on. I do not sell a kit to make separating zippers.
Thanx!
You're welcome!
Great video. I got a 404 error message using the link to written instructions.
It has been updated!
my pulls NEVER go on that easy
A zipper jig is very helpful that we sell.
I wish you would have shown how to do it without the sewn end, because it takes me 30 minutes to do one & there is always a gap.
Thank you for commenting! You could try using the Gypsy Zipper Jig which is really helpful when there's no fabric extension. You can find it here: sallietomato.com/products/gypsy-quilter-zipper-jig
beatifull eyes.verrywelldone kudos. Stucoffee pinevill .mo south of joplin.. CAIO.
First, I don't have extra fabric at either end of my zipper. Second, I don't understand what POLE means.
So what the hell you trying to do?😅
It is a zipper Pull
This was a mysterious black hole UNTIL NOW!!!
ugh the second tape just wont go in
Thank you for commenting. You can try using the Gypsy Zipper Jig, which is really helpful as well. You can find it here: sallietomato.com/products/gypsy-quilter-zipper-jig
How do you add a zipper pull when you do not have a tail of fabric....just zipper feet. In this video, you stated that you would show how to do that as well, yet did not.
Never mind. I found your other video with raw edge.

Thank you-we will check that out.
Porque nada en Español ??
We are working on traslating our patterns to Spanish
3:36
Thank you!
I broke my needle doing this
So a bit slower over the nylon coils. We do that and have not broken a needle. Are you using metal coil zippers?
you are so beautiful , i kept looking at you instead of the demo
You are not saving time trying to get the pull on the zipper
A zipper jig that we sell is very helpful. Try that.
Not useful. There isn't always going to be guiding fabric.
Thank you for commenting! Most of the zipper lengths we use for samples have no extra guiding fabric, so we use the Gypsy Zipper Jig often. You can find this great product here: sallietomato.com/products/gypsy-quilter-zipper-jig
That sewing machine looks huge. You must be tiny.
It looks larger with the extension table. It is about a 7inch throat
@@SallieTomato What machine is that?
@@stopthephilosophicalzombie9017 that is the Accomplish, but she is now using the new Bernette 08 straight stitch machine. It does come with a very narrow foot. Check out Sew Much More in Waukesha for either machine. They can take care of you. Thank you
