The Pynchon influence is partly responsible. I've got Gravity's Rainbow here with the reader's companion. That alone can get me through a month of isolation.
Long-time Zevon fan and I never knew this video even existed. Transverse City is a criminally overlooked album, I still hear "Gridlock" in my head whenever I'm in slow-moving traffic.
In the last few weeks, I've finished reading the book "I'll Sleep When I'm Dead" (Crystal Zevon) about the ups and downs of Warren Zevon's life. It's not always easy reading, but with a good blend of journal notes, quotes from Crystal, Jordan, Ariel, musician friends, and more than a few other friends, it's honest and insightful. While reading the book, I've listened with such enjoyment and appreciation again or for the first time to dozens of Warren Zevon songs. January 24, 2020 would have been his 73rd birthday. Although I also miss him like many of you , the genius and spirit of Warren Zevon is alive and well in his music.
Genius is rarely rewarded. Zevon's two Virgin Record albums; "Sentimental Hygiene," and "Transverse City" are masterpieces of composition and message. Unfortunately, the abysmal sales of both albums led to Virgin Records dropping Warren in 1989. The psychic turmoil of that severance meant Zevon would have to survive as an independent artist. Composing a handful of sterling albums on a small label, and touring mostly small clubs and bars like The Dingo in Albuquerque, Zevon's music through the 1990's up until his death in 2003 continued to express musical and lyrical brilliance. His recent RRHOF nomination is an ironic nod of recognition for this singular artist. If he actually wins induction, I hope to watch it on the news at eleven...
This video has it all! Warren Zevon, a high quality, David Gilmour playing the solo on-screen, a well-made clip to accompany the song... and of course the song itself! This is Zevon at his best! =D
Didn't know this vid existed. TRANSVERSE CITY was even out of print for some years .One of the unsung songwriters of my time. Your music lives WZ And like many a great artist, your appreciation will grow in retrospect, Has anyone ever written a better song about such a futuristic nightmare? Genius AND seasoned with Gilmore
Kohntarkosz, David used either his red or duck blue Stratocaster (both equipped with EMG pickups) or the black Steinberger with EMG pickups on this track through his Hiwatt amplifiers, Mesa Boogie cabinets and Pete Cornish pedal board. He recorded his guitar parts in London with Pink Floyd engineer Andrew Jackson at Abbey Road Studios (while mixing Delicate Sound of Thunder) and then told Warren to use the best bits for the solos. David agreed to the video as make up for not being able to fly to L.A. to record the track initially (and used the Gretsch white Penguin guitar, a rare guitar I may add for the video).
I've been lucky enough to see Waren Zevon twice-The first time was I believe The Envoy tour and the second time was the Traverse Ciry Tour(l believe early 1990s)- I enjoyed the Envoy tour tremendously, and the thing about the Traverse City tour(Beacon theatre I;m pretty sure) was that he played all the hits in the first half, while his computer was uploading - and played Traverse City-- Fantastic songwriter/performer who wrote underrated songs---
It's coming up on 15 years since his passing and his songs only pick up steam! How could anyone hear this song and not think of Detroit, or Chicago, or any of 100 other hell holes.
Hell I love Jesus and Mary Chain’s “Blues from a Gun.” This song was after that on my mix tape. Yeah, tape. And those two songs are beautifully matched IMHO. BTW, I don’t know if anyone else did but I thought to myself, this sounds like Pink Floyd and Zevon made a record together.
Not really a 50's/early 60's song if I have to be honest. The theme is very Fallout but it was released too late and doesn't have the right sound for it (and few people actually knows who WZ is on top of that), but it would definitely fit in s sci-fi game
When I sing this song on my own, I sing it about 15-20% slower. And I know how this is going to sound, but it's a way better song that way. This is not a tune that you belt through like you're double-parked.
Feel sorry for people who don't know this record exists. Absolute class
As a big Warren fan, i,ve only just found this ! Never seen him playing a resonator before.
Warren Zevon and David Gilmour=Magic!
This song speaks to my soul. I remember playing it on my headphones at work, weeping quietly.
This amazing track doesn't seem to be on any streaming service. David Gilmour's guitar work is typically brilliant.
The entire album is on Spotify.
Reminds me of his solo on "Comfortably Numb" at the end of the song.
Obscenely underrated record.
This album was insanely ahead of its time.
wish he was still here today
More thank he would have imagined .... It's genius.
Idk if it was ahead of its time or just disregarded.

Agreed! Love the profile picture!
the best song about pollution ever written.

Same here. From England 🏴 (traffic jam) here.
Warren Zevon and David Gilmour? Shut up and take my money. Got the CD and still love it.

Very well written comment, a refreshing sight these days!
Warrens last living days were'nt exactly spent in Splendid Isolation.
It's a great book.warts and all
PURE GENIUS. Warren remains one of the greatest songwriters - and artists - of all time.
Warren Zevon was the greatest musical poet of the 20th century.
Damn right!
Agree.
Warren could write a novel in three minutes. I miss him.

Maybe he’ll finally be inducted now that Jann Wenner is gone. It’s well known that he didn’t like him.
Warren is Cloaked from 99% of Humanity, even though I’m a musicphile, it took 55 years to discover this Genius
Welcome. I saw him live 3 times, first in 1987. He was the real deal.
Oh, yes...there is alway's room for Pink Floyd's lead guitar legend on a Warren Zevon track. Thank you so much.
Excellent album!! 🎸
Boom Boom Mancini (Youngstown) & Run Straight Down (East Palestine). Who knew Zevon had such an affinity for Mahoning County, Ohio?
saw him many times london /manchester/tempe etc miss the old velvet nosed one
I miss warren so much I could cry
Oh, me too. This is such a brilliant song.
Vote for Warren Zevon for 2023 rrhof

Brilliant favourite of mine. Some of Gilmour’s greatest guitar, virtually unknown except to the annointed few
@Evan Hodge yep.
@Evan Hodge yes- it’s a religious experience
This track, and this whole album is one of his best. And that's saying something cause they're all one of his best.
Didn't know this vid existed. TRANSVERSE CITY was even out of print for some years

They re released the CD soon after he died.

Not often you see Gilmour play anything other than his beloved Strats...
Wow this whole album is rather fantastic
I'm a Zevon fan and never saw this vid before. Pretty cool.
It's a shame this is Zevon and Gilmour's only collaboration.
Fantastic!
That time Warren Zevon went full Roger Waters... and it was glorious.
Warren and Dave rockin' out from thr past on subject matter of today.
It's 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels in 2023. Let's see how high we can get!
a great song way ahead of its time
Pure COVID dark-comfort found here; you need it sometimes.

Loved this song (and album) almost 30 years ago - today it’s a classic!
I am thrilled to see this video for the first time.I love the song and miss Warren's songwriting and artistry. Thanks for sharing this superb video!!
First saw/heard this video 10 years ago. This doesn't make me special in any way, just grateful :)
Makes my heart hurt that he's gone.
We lost the best.
They had to go. The problem is no one was behind them.
...there is just one word for this man...GENIUS...R.I.P. MY UNKNOWN FRIEND
Great video! Outstanding amalgam of Zevon & Gilmour! One of Warren's best. Another great Zevon tune: "My Shit's Fucked Up" RIP: WZ
legend of a man warren zevon
fucking kick ass song.

I LOVE WARREN ZEVON THIS IS AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!
First time I heard this I knew it was Gilmore.
I thought that as well. It was great seeing David playing in the video. Felt vindicated somehow. What a power team.
My favourite Warren Zevon song!
I saw this tour..still have the T shirt.

Criminally underrated album.
And Gilmour!!
This is so freaking cool
Timeless warning for humankind…sadly unanswered still 💀
This song is a happy-clappy epitaph compared to what's actually happening.
You know, you may be right in that. Still among us Rex?
lmao
@@matthewchambers-sinclair8772 2020.....yeah, this song was prophetic, IMO
@@Michael_Dominic 2022
Thought of this song during the eclipse today
Warren Zevon & David Gilmour playing a futuristic lament!
WZ goes Cyberpunk!
Yeah!
1st time I heard it I knew it was Gilmour.
Great Audio
SOOO Cool! Just so cool! Run straight down.....

This reminds me of Love Canal in New York.
That's funny I live near there. lol
Warren Zevon with a 12-string resonator
Jam on your music a lot zevon
What pictures would you be referring? Excuse me, what screenshots? Be more specific. Who are you talking about?
Fritz Lang's Metropolis is a heavy visual influence here.
Gilmore rocks
Oconic
a luta continua
Pretty sure his iq was probably of the chart!
You think?
Why isn't this in fallout 4?
