  • In figure skating, brackets refer to a specific type of turn or edge change that skaters incorporate into their routines. A bracket is a transitional movement that involves changing the skating edge from an outside edge to an inside edge or vice versa while maintaining flow and continuity in the program.
There are two main types of brackets: inside brackets and outside brackets.
Inside Brackets: In an inside bracket, the skater starts on an outside edge and transitions to an inside edge. The turn is typically made by crossing the free foot over the skating foot.
Outside Brackets: In an outside bracket, the skater starts on an inside edge and transitions to an outside edge. The turn is usually made by extending the free leg to the outside of the skating foot.
Brackets are often included in figure skating programs to showcase a skater's ability to perform intricate footwork and transitions. Skaters execute brackets as part of step sequences, spins, or as connecting moves between jumps and other elements. The skillful incorporation of brackets contributes to the overall artistry and technical merit of a skater's performance.
