Floating the gears is the only way to go. I haven't used the clutch, except for stopping, in my semi in 20 years. Save that left leg. Awesome to see you guys starting on this build. Can't wait to see what you do.
I always thought it was common knowledge to "shift on the fly". But I grew up with manual transmissions in almost all my family vehicles, so maybe its not all that common after all...
Check the transmission on that fire truck, it may have multiple grease fittings on the clutch linkage, on both sides of the bellhousing, and on the throw out bearing, that could be your clutch issue
@@jmanlinc if it's got a grease fitting on the throwout bearing thats what it'll grease, that and the clutch brake if it's got one, on most class 8 trucks you have that one, plus one on each side of the bellhousing for the horseshoe/fork, and some (peterbilts) have 2 or so fittings on the linkage, im not familiar with an American Lafrance fire truck but I would assume it's not to far off from a semi, if its got a cover bolted on the bottom of the bellhousing that's where your throwout grease fitting is, it may also have an adjustable clutch, most of them should have a 1/2 inch gap between the clutch brake and throwout bearing with the pedal released, it should also have about an inch of free play in the clutch pedal
I loved riding back seat in an open cab at 2am driving to the scene. Amazing views looking backward and the cold air got ya woken up enough to be alert! I'd love to see what the paint would look like cleaned up. Bring it back to red. Would be a cool collab if you find another youtuber that does restorative paint work, but keep the patina. Cheers guys!
It's most likely a bellcrank clutch, and the linkage is sticking/seized. Get under there with some penetrating fluid and spray the bejesus out of it. Yes, floating the transmission is easier on it than clutching every shift. Just be gentle and coax it into the next gear, it should fall in, not force in. You'll also need to learn to rev match on the way down.
Shifting without the clutch and starting from a stop are connected, in big trucks like that and semis the clutch is actually a brake in the trans it doesn’t really have a “clutch” per say it’s just a break in the trans so that is why it’s so hard for you to use the clutch while driving is because your trying to stop the massive gears inside of the trans with massive amounts of inertia. Just thought I’d share some knowledge I learned from my grandfather before he passed away! Love everything you guys do
It’s amazing to think that my grandfather who was born in 1951 seen fire trucks like this around town growing up and to see how far things have changed over the years would love to see more content of the fire truck

Heck ya dudes. That fire truck is going to be awesome! An yes you were being told right about the clutch... it's for starting an stopping really once ur going just shift. You'll get the feel of it after some practice. Just shift to the next gear as your letting off the gas and then gas it as it's going into the next gear. It helps smooth it out if u start the shift before you let off the gas an then just gently back into the pedal as is going up to the next gear then once it catches floor it. Hope that helps ya out if u haven't already gotten it down

I was looking for one of these for awhile to build a ramp truck out of. Never found a good fire engine candidate. Settled for a 1989 international s1853 full size school bus. Dt360 powered with a spicer 5 speed trans. Now all I need is highway friendly gears in the rear and time to cut half the back off to ramp it. Going to need some serious ramps even though it's only 41 inches to the floor level I will be putting my drift car on it. Can't wait to see this done!

Okay guys I love all the stuff you do. When I saw this 65 Ford firetruck and you said you were going to make it at hauler, I was really excited. When you drove the mower off of the bank onto the top I was pretty disappointed. I wanted to see you put in a little effort I thought you were going to 45 ramp the back of the truck like an old-school race hauler.
