i will be completely honest, i love this episode. I live in Chicago and the construction symbols here are as plentiful as the buildings, and because of this episode i feel so in tune with what is happening (at least construction wise) with my city. Shortly after i had seen this episode i had taken a walk around the city just to see what i could understand. it was so much fun and enlightening. Thank you Modern Rogue. :-)
Usually I find people like this to be extremely fake but you guys make jokes that are genuine and funny and that's what attracted me to your channel, you guys are REAL.
Wow never thought about that either. Never had it happen before. Thankfully, because of the nature of the business, the utility locator would simply be called back out to verify the marks.
I inspect geotechnical drilling and construction all the time, and read these often. Like you guys said, it's fun to be able to walk around a town or city and get an idea of where things are and how our civilization is powered and supported.
Found your channel about 5 hours ago. I've probably spent 3 of those hours watching videos... These videos are gold! Greetings from Laporte, Minnesota!
A gas line blew up a whole city block?Reminds me of the Guadalajara explosions. Some people here are planning to confuse the heck out of workers.Where could this end up?Another devastating explosion?Internet failure?
Why do you always take 4 days to come out and still miss crucial buried utilities? Or why does it take 2 days to decide the only way to identify an unmarked line is by drilling into it?
Worked for an engineering company that does surveying. The paints are usually bright colors so field crews can locate them easily, and designed to be water soluble so if someone steals our paints for graffiti, it just washes away in the rain. Also you need to be able to just rinse it all off when the project is finished.
Your friendly neighborhood Ratchet What? Other people aren't allowed to watch things you don't like? People always say it's a bad show without giving reasons. So give me 3 reasons that it sucks or your opinion will be as invalid as the Black Lives Matter movement.
A hotel was built in my home town, and the excavators hit some kind of internet cable thing. This didn't sound like a big deal in a tiny village, but the most popular restaurant in the area lost their internet connection and couldn't accept card as a method of payment. That was a big problem, because most tourists only had cards and no transportation to the city center where the only ATM is.
I actually am a locate technician most of the info they stated is correct. a lot goes into making these markings and them being in the correct spot. and it's not just in public areas. anytime someone digs they are supposed to call and wait 48 hours before digging so the locators can come out and mark the area. if someone digs without a locate and they hit something they have to pay and can get in some legal trouble as well
When i worked for Sundt making I-10 electronic theoughout the Phoenix area, we called it calling in for blue stake. Utility companies, phone, power, etc. Would come mark it out as we were placing fiber optics lines. If your company should knock out these lines, you can receive big time fines.
It's not just excavation companies, if you are going to be digging on your own property you should call and have all the utilities marked out for you. It is a free service and can save you real headaches.
Thanks! I got to show this information off to my friends. Granted, by the time I crossed paths with Utility Graffiti with my friends I had forgotten nearly all of it, but it was still pretty fun. By the way, I know I already suggested a bunch of anime (on the removed video), but I've found more: Boku no Hero Academia (My Hero Academia) Mob Psycho 100 The different art style might be off-putting, but hang in there, the story only gets better (and the fresh art style stops being weird).
Hey guys, love your videos. I am a utility locator for USIC. I would be happy to make a video response for you guys to really show these marks for people Interested. Let me know! PS we don't use special paint, it's just water based or solvent based paint. You were correct on the upside down cans, but thats the only difference.
The Modern Rogue sure thing man! I don't work till Monday, but I'll make up a simple video but until then, I'll share a cool slow mo video of how we get our flags in the ground, on Twitter!
I've heard that sometimes an individual who is investigating locations to burglarize might hide markings to indicate which locations to target among the utility markers on the ground instead of keeping a list on their person which might be found if picked up by police. Perhaps this would be worth looking into as a means of revisiting this topic?
I work with a lot of utility locators ( in aus we call them service locators) and its quite interesting stuff. Shame you guys didnt have the wand and box they use to demonstrate how it works. Love your vids keep it up
I have most of these codes in my phone, I actually have like, photos of an entire system of codes. Going from Cypher and binary to codes in old diaries that may have been old latin or witch craft. I have a lot of time on my hands...
No, I go to a good school. But some of the courses are 100% stupid for anything other than credits. I had a nature course for 3 months one time and we didn't do anything other than copy book work, go outside and clean a green house, and watch nature videos. Got a credit, all that matters.
if they did teach you this you'd moan and complain you will never ever use this unless you go into that industry, and if you do go you are taught that. now who would have thunk?
Not sure if you guys know this or not, but there are secret symbols that hobos use. They use them to indicate things to each, like safe places, bad places or food.
Pink is "temporary survey markings". There are several different kinds of "surveying", so I'm not _certain,_ but it sounds like construction workers use pink marks to mark corners and other reference points on the site before they actually start building. Apparently some cities also use pink marks to label sites for improvements; new ramps, sections to tear out, cracks to fill, and stiff like that, but those aren't technically the same thing as the utility markings.
They are not required by construction companies. They are required that construction companies have them by the local government. The local government often times requires any one that is digging any where, even on your own property, to get locates.
One time at my old house, I pulled out an orange sprinkler nozzle from the ground that wasn't even connected to anything, and my grandma came over and noticed it for some reason and thought was a gas line, said if we didn't call 811 the neighborhood might explode. After watching this video I can show her how dumb she sounded 😂
Love your videos, man! Always something fun and cool to learn! But to be honest, you really have to push more of these out here. I'm a sponge, fill m.... j... just.... just post more cool stuff!
i will be completely honest, i love this episode. Johnathan Koller I know right. it's gonna be fun stepping outside in Chicago and knowing things now!!
And now I've officially watched every episode. How is this channel not more popular?
well, we're not even 2 months old yet, if that helps... Please spread the word!
Duh. Any amount of forethought would have answered that question. As much as my word can possibly spread, I'll spread it!
Usually I find people like this to be extremely fake but you guys make jokes that are genuine and funny and that's what attracted me to your channel, you guys are REAL.
How great will it be when graffiti artists start putting these signs down where they shouldn't be
!!
I'd never thought of that.
Wow never thought about that either. Never had it happen before. Thankfully, because of the nature of the business, the utility locator would simply be called back out to verify the marks.
and probably kill like 50 people.... but it's for the lolz so it's ok
To* Can't get good lolz without good grammar.

The Modern Rogue, decoding the world around you- one cryptic symbol at a time. This is why I love this Channel!
I inspect geotechnical drilling and construction all the time, and read these often. Like you guys said, it's fun to be able to walk around a town or city and get an idea of where things are and how our civilization is powered and supported.
That's crazy, I see these all the time but never think anything of them.
you also may be seeing hobo signs www.angelfire.com/folk/famoustramp/signs.html
Found your channel about 5 hours ago. I've probably spent 3 of those hours watching videos... These videos are gold! Greetings from Laporte, Minnesota!

Did the same thing! I really enjoy your videos. Greetings from Germany! :D
Same
We live in the same town!
Congratulations, you have earned a new skill: understanding random graffitis!
My guess is that modern rogues use these signs to communicate somehow..
Something that you see almost every day. Thanks for finally giving me an explanation.
A gas line blew up a whole city block?Reminds me of the Guadalajara explosions.
Some people here are planning to confuse the heck out of workers.Where could this end up?Another devastating explosion?Internet failure?
I love how Jason's sun glasses are a metaphor.
So no one saw the graffiti artist put "porn" on one of the junction boxes?
idk first letter looks more like an R to me. Almost looks like RORM.
I saw it
i saw it
I saw it
I saw it
you guys are truly an inspiration to many out there who walk around wondering the same things..pls keep this up and become the new mcgyuvers!!!!
I paint those lines for a living.
Charles Bronson cool
Charles Bronson could you answer some questions?🤔
Why do you always take 4 days to come out and still miss crucial buried utilities? Or why does it take 2 days to decide the only way to identify an unmarked line is by drilling into it?
Charles Bronson props to you
Sounds fun

Hi. Just wanted to say that this is the first UA-cam video I've ever taken notes during. Thanks!

Jeff_Mustash lol emos are traaaaaash
Maybe because it's a good show?
AZNwannabe06 | No, he's a fucking plebian that doesn't notice anything in an anime because he's too busy reading the captions.
Your friendly neighborhood Ratchet What? Other people aren't allowed to watch things you don't like? People always say it's a bad show without giving reasons. So give me 3 reasons that it sucks or your opinion will be as invalid as the Black Lives Matter movement.
This made me think of warchalking.
Warchalking is probably something Modern Rogue would enjoy learning about.
Just discovered your channel last night. Love you guys' content and looking forward to more!

modern rogue has its own channel, now thats what i'm waiting for
When i worked for Sundt making I-10 electronic theoughout the Phoenix area, we called it calling in for blue stake. Utility companies, phone, power, etc. Would come mark it out as we were placing fiber optics lines. If your company should knock out these lines, you can receive big time fines.
Put this up in the list of stuff that are probably useless to me until it turns out that sometime in the future this knowledge will safe my life.
Wait arent you the host of scam school i just found this channel and it is AWESOME!!!!!
McAwesome01 McAwesome01 I also used watch his show on National Geographic channel
Yes he is
It's not just excavation companies, if you are going to be digging on your own property you should call and have all the utilities marked out for you. It is a free service and can save you real headaches.
SAO is so sad but it's so good. I've ALMOST worked up the courage to put myself through that again.
Thanks! I got to show this information off to my friends. Granted, by the time I crossed paths with Utility Graffiti with my friends I had forgotten nearly all of it, but it was still pretty fun. By the way, I know I already suggested a bunch of anime (on the removed video), but I've found more:
Boku no Hero Academia (My Hero Academia)

The different art style might be off-putting, but hang in there, the story only gets better (and the fresh art style stops being weird).
Hey Jason, where did you get those awesome sunglasses?
Hey guys, love your videos. I am a utility locator for USIC. I would be happy to make a video response for you guys to really show these marks for people Interested. Let me know! PS we don't use special paint, it's just water based or solvent based paint. You were correct on the upside down cans, but thats the only difference.
post a thing and hit me up on twitter @shwood... I'd love to highlight your insights!
The Modern Rogue sure thing man! I don't work till Monday, but I'll make up a simple video but until then, I'll share a cool slow mo video of how we get our flags in the ground, on Twitter!
Like to see you guys hit the million mark, probably will before summer tbh
I've heard that sometimes an individual who is investigating locations to burglarize might hide markings to indicate which locations to target among the utility markers on the ground instead of keeping a list on their person which might be found if picked up by police. Perhaps this would be worth looking into as a means of revisiting this topic?
Thanks guys, now I can't ignore the markings when I go by anymore. I try to translate them and then attempt to predict what work is about to be done.
Hey, can you guys do that graffiti episode?
Are these markings the same in other countries or just America?
Wow. Like bryan said i dont think I will be able to go around without looking at all the paint now
I work with a lot of utility locators ( in aus we call them service locators) and its quite interesting stuff. Shame you guys didnt have the wand and box they use to demonstrate how it works.
Love your vids keep it up
I can thunk of a number of cases this would come in handy, both reading, and imitating.
whats the name if the first song playing in the background?
Now I can get some spray paint and confuse the living heck out of construction workers
Christopher Tradeshow thats evil. lol.
Any sports field marking paint will work
+Christopher Tradeshow Don't complain when your internet is gone.
Or if your entire street blows up.
haha not nice. :)
Daniell Bondad
You can do it in other place, not next to your house.
You even can do it in another city.
So, shuttie uppie.
Has anybody seen "lol" graffiti markings on the ground, and if so, do you know what they mean?
I always thought it meant "Level Out Land"
I'm curious, what's with the red glasses
This is one of those things you never really notice until someone points it out
This was interesting since they just marked between my fence and the sidewalk. Gas company. Of course there were Kansas Gas Company flags also.
What digging disaster happened on August 11th?
I have most of these codes in my phone, I actually have like, photos of an entire system of codes. Going from Cypher and binary to codes in old diaries that may have been old latin or witch craft. I have a lot of time on my hands...
Jason i love ur shades....name them for me pls...
I just broke my ankle so I am a couch potato for a few weeks I'm gonna watch a lot of scam school love your vids they heal broken bones
The two arrows with the lines in the middle is 3 wires in conduit and 3 lines outside
I used to work for a utility locating company
I live in Vegas. I'm sure I can find a way to use this skill for my benefit.
SAO is absolutely AMAZING!
I have noticed some paint that has lasted a long time. I don't thing that all companies use paint that goes away quickly.
The Irregular at Magic High School, on Crunchyroll and nextflix!
it's sad that this has taught me more than what school would :T
No, school would teach you this, but over the course of a 3-4 month semester to teach all of what this taught you in a 4 minute video.
You go to a shitty school. Or you think what you're learning isn't learning.
Bree Morèau yeah but it would teach you shit you need to learn.
If I don't find a treasure in the end, I'm going to sue you.
#meaningful
What do you use to make the voice in the beginning where it tells you what the video is about?
www.text2speech.org/ - "Male US" voice
Brandt Hughes thanks
This Is helpful for when you want to dig in your yard
At the risk of starting a flame war, SAO ROCKS! I can't wait for the nervegear, AND I WANT TO BE TRAPPED IN AINCRAD!
God damn! This channel's videos are good. I subscribed and then unsubscribed and then subscribed again to make sure I subscribed!
Ok, its been two years. Can we have our gang tag episode now? Pretty please?
Still waiting
Not sure if you guys know this or not, but there are secret symbols that hobos use. They use them to indicate things to each, like safe places, bad places or food.
Very cool video. Super informative
What if they put pink? I actually saw one but what does that mean? BTW thanks Modern Rogue
Pink is "temporary survey markings". There are several different kinds of "surveying", so I'm not _certain,_ but it sounds like construction workers use pink marks to mark corners and other reference points on the site before they actually start building. Oh! thanks bro!

that's quite interesting, never thought of that.
is he colorblind?
Another anime I like on Crunchyroll besides sao is the asterisk war. I really like it
1:07 It looks like it says call 811 before you die. O.O
They are not required by construction companies. They are required that construction companies have them by the local government. The local government often times requires any one that is digging any where, even on your own property, to get locates.
In addition to it being a good practice to follow for safety and liability.
I never really noticed those until I saw this episode. It's everywhere. Modern Rogue is illuminati confirms.
Erased and March comes in like a lion. they are good anime i highly suggest them.
The X with the circle around it is clearly a bomb site of course
You have my like for SAO
One time at my old house, I pulled out an orange sprinkler nozzle from the ground that wasn't even connected to anything, and my grandma came over and noticed it for some reason and thought was a gas line, said if we didn't call 811 the neighborhood might explode. After watching this video I can show her how dumb she sounded 😂
yep, they'll locate "everything" for you. except the live gas line they forget about every time.
"The pilot's love song"- what can I say... it has airplanes.
