    17:10 The moment when mercy turns into revenge. Katara showed she was ready to kill-she used bloodbending.
    If he had still been a Fire Nation soldier, that would have been the end. But here, his life after retirement it's endless humiliation, and Katara realized that killing him might actually be a mercy for him - ending that humiliation.
    By letting him live, she condemned him to suffer for the rest of his life.
    We can interpret this as revenge.

    • @benspiller
      @benspiller  2 місяці тому +1

      This is so true, I mainly saw it letting him live to not taint herself but this actually makes more sense and it's a far more fitting revenge, forcing him not only to continue living his life of embarrassment but also knowing that the girl who's Mother he took from her deemed his life unworthy of being taken.

    I really love how we see the same flashback 3 times from 3 perspectives, everytime with more details on what happened.
    Thats how you write and show a build up.

    • @benspiller
      @benspiller  2 місяці тому +1

      It's the perfect way to build up this scene, we all know what eventually happens but it adds so much detail to all the characters given their perspective, Sokka not being present, Katara blaming herself and seeing the difference in Yan-ra from the man he was to the pathetic man in the present.

    theres a theory going around that during that raid that killed their mother, it was not long after Hama escaped by using bloodbending. Its theorized that the reason that raid happened is because they probably assumed once Hama escaped, she would return to her home at the southern water tribe. That would explain why they asked where the waterbender was..the 'last water bender' which would have been the last person they captured, Hama - it was before Katara was born after all.
    It also explains why they weren't accepting prisoners..because they decreed that Hama was far to dangerous to try to contain again, and were set to find and kill her..Kataras mother died because of Hama's escape.

      The timeline doesn't work bc we see a young Hama escape, so you're suggesting it took the fire nation like 20+ years to go after her

      This works so well, they even included Bloodbening in the episode to call back to Hama so if this isn't the connection it'd definitely be close. It's so sad to think that Hama inadvertently caused this to Katara so now she isn't just an understandable villain but she's also caused this type of pain just by escaping prison.

  • @V1G4M1
    @V1G4M1 2 місяці тому +2

    While many people suspect that Hamas escape might be the reason for the „no prisoners“ ruling, I also think another reason could have been the avatar missing for so long. After all, water *would* be the next element in the avatar cicle ^^

    i think the fight in the begining actually shows that zuko is stronger. when that punch was thrown, they were way more on the left side ( zuko was closer to the edge). zuko mearly slid off the airship even tho he was way closer to falling off, and azula tumbled across the airship and flew off the other side.

    Aside from not being able to blood bend during the day, another reason why Kotara doesn't is because it's not about forgiving the guy who killed her Mum, it's about learning to forgive Zuko, obviously she couldn't blood bend him but that's not the point, the point is she needed to let go of her anger against Zucco she may never be able to forgive the man who killed her mum which is completely understandable and whether she showed him mercy because she felt sorry for him or because she was strong enough not to, the point was that she was able to forgive Zuk for everything, for so long Kotara had directed her anger and pain against Suzuko connecting him to all fire nation things and blaming him for a lot of stuff because it was easier, but now that he's a part of team avatar and was able to help her get closure, that bond allowed them to connect better and get closer becoming friends which is how she was able to finally forgive him. It's okay if you can't forgive someone for horrible things they've done you don't always need to forgive people, but at the same time there are different ways to forgive and I think it makes sense that in the case of the man who killed her father, she'll never be able to forgive him but when it comes to Zuko, a kid with a messed up childhood who was so focused on his honour that he was blinded by, it makes sense that he would be the one forgiven, as he's grown and changed and now Katara can tell and is ready to forgive him because she no longer connects her anger at the foreign nation to him.

      I think this episode was just so beautiful with how it explored forgiveness and blame, Katara and Zuko's stories have been fairly similar in regards to their parents so the way this episode and the final of season 2 connected them was perfect but also added to the blame Katara gave to Zuko, here she finally gets to heal this core part of her character that was personally tied to her blame for Zuko and got to forgive him. the writing is incredible and not only adds so much to Katara but it's debate on these concepts are phenomenal.

    Zuko wouldn't even have known that Bloodbending was a thing - right now, so far as we know, there are only 2 Bloodbenders in the world, so Zuko has just discovered that Katara is more powerful than he could have imagined.

    A lot of people have this theory that Zero actually doesn't know the names of team avatar, the reason he introduces himself to the group in the episode where he joins them and says hi Zuko here, is actually because he's hoping that they will introduce themselves to him as well so he can learn their names, when this doesn't happen, he instead slightly adds their names into conversations once he learns them, unlike Azula who is calculated and pays attention to everything, Zuker was too focused on capturing the avatar to learn his name or the names of his friends, their names were spoken a few times in front of him but it makes sense that he wouldn't really pay attention, I think the only person whose name he knew for a long time was Sooka, which would make sense, but a lot of people have a theory that it isn't until this episode that he learns guitarist name, he only ever ever referred to Aang as the avatar until he learnt his name recently and it's the same for Kotara, listen to what he says again when talking to Sokka in this episode, he says "your sister hates me"
    To which Sokka replies with
    "Kotara doesn't hate anyone"
    And then Zucco's next line is "Kotara mentioned it before"
    Which again would make sense as he didn't really have any opportunities to learn their names, so just sneaks them into conversation once he learns them and despite being trapped with her embarrassing say, he still never actually learnt her name he just always calls her the avatar girl or the water bender girl or stuff like that Until he joins the group, which I think is something that not a lot of people realise, this is a theory that a lot of people have been floating around I don't know how for all characters but definitely for it it really seems to be true.
    Also just wanted to pointed out, but when Zuko goes to see Sokka and runs into Suki and then goes into the tent and it's like awkward, Suki and Saka were almost 100% about to have sex, I know it's a kids TV show technically but I think we can all agree that was almost 100% what was going to happen and what the implication was which makes it even more funny in my opinion, I love when kids shows sneak in little things like that for the adults or older people watching, especially when that kind of stuff goes over children's heads when they're younger like if you watched the show as a kid and then you watched it again as an adult there's so many things you missed as a kid that you are able to more as an adult and getting of awkward moments like that etc.

      I absolutley love this theory! It makes so much sense that Zuko didn't bother to learn anyone's names and the man is so awkward that he isn't going to ask so he just has to wait and listen for when they're going to be used 😂 Wish I picked up on this sooner as this is so funny to think about and I'm sure looking back at the scenes it becomes increasingly obvious.
      Also, love the Sokka and Suki thing 😂 It's painfully obvious what they're doing to adults but it's also vague enough to get past kids and I love it because it goes to show the writers aren't just thinking of a child audience to entertain but also an adult one. Makes me think they somehow planned for this show to be timeless and age really well for multiple generations.

    Katara needed to face Yan-ra to forgive herself. The rage she felt was at the fire nation, sure, but it was also rage at herself and who she is. She would be furious with herself for being able to help, furious that she was a waterbender, which was the reason the captain was there. Katara could never begin to forgive or move on because some part of her, deep down, still doubted she would have been able to help today. Defeating him with such ease would have 'completed' her journey to become someone who would never fail to protect her loved ones again. The journey was ALWAYS about turning the monster she had built up in her head back into a man, and a pathetic little man at that.

      This episode was amazing at just exploring the ideas of forgiveness and blame, Katara as a character is amazing and so well written and this has got to be her best episode with the culmination of how it deals with her core motivations. The hurt she's constantly felt from the Fire Nation has finally been healed and she can more on a better person while also being able to confront her past knowing her mother sacrificed herself to save her. It's so beautiful and tragic but the episode explored her journey flawlessly.

      This makes so much sense, I love how much grief has been explored through these characters and how Katara has basically never been able to process it as she took her mother's place, makes this episode feel like her whole character has been building up to this.

    Zuko and Aang had valid points and neither one is necessarily good or bad. Zuko is absolutely right and Aang’s distaste for killing needs to be challenged if he wants to protect the world against Ozai. Aang may have good intentions, but in reality, that is not always enough. Aang was never this condescending or sounding this preachy in the first two books. Zuko accepted Katara’s flawed, darker side in a way that Aang could not. Zuko didn’t try to make the journey about it himself to talk about Ursa and how she was involved saving him. He didn’t try to egg her on to kill Yon Rha or bulked at the fact that she bloodbent. Katara gave him plenty of opportunities to question her. He didn’t take a single one of them. That being said, I don’t ship Zutara, but I also don’t ship Kataang.
    Give Azula a snicker bar because that was half-cocked and sloppy on her part. This was not the first time she had to save herself while her opponent was saved by a Team Avatar member. The Drill for one with Aang being saved by Momo.
    Ursa proposed a “vicious, treasonous plan” to protect her son, Zuko. And Kya sacrificed her life to save her daughter, Katara.

    • @benspiller
      @benspiller  2 місяці тому +1

      I loved how this episode basically served as a debate on forgiveness and whether it's always necessary to start healing. It really set up Aang's position for what's coming so well while also having such a great exploration of Katara and I'm so happy that Zuko took a back seat in this episode and just let Katara do what she needed, it's the same with Sokka's ep where he's along for the ride to bond with the characters but ultimately this was Katara's journey and Zuko didn't overshadow it.
      Love the position Aang is in now as I think at this point both Roku and Kyoshi have made it pretty clear what they would do in his shoes so it's going to be really interesting to see how he comes to terms with what he needs to do, it's not something you usually see in stories where the main character actually has to think and understand that they need to take a life.
      As for the shipping, not really shipping anyone at the moment 😂 only siding with Aang and Katara as that's the clear direction the show is headed and haven't really thought about which couple I prefer.
      Azula's fight was so interesting, I'm gonna say she lost here technically because she won nothing but forcing the Avatar to move. Zuko now appears to be a match for her and she spent a whole lot of time falling making me think she had to process what was happening for a bit before realising she had to save herself as she's never had to before.

    not so fun fan theory, at the point of that raid Hama should've already invented bloodbending and scape, so that's why they "didn't take any prisoners" so, in a way, hama is responsable for katara's mother's death, if hama didn't escape with bloodbending she would have been in prison all this time

    • @benspiller
      @benspiller  2 місяці тому +1

      😬😬 This makes so much sense though, Hama was super old so she probably escaped by now and they'd have a bigger motivation to take out the Southern benders specifically because of what she can do. Plus Katara using bloodbending in this episode really strengthens this connection.

    Yeah Ozai’s angels versus season 3 team avatar would be one sided. I see zuko and Aang 2v1 on Azula, katara and Suki 2v1 on Tai Lee and toph and Sokka 2v1 on Mai. They’d be outnumbered and outmatched. Considering this fact it’s a great writing decision to make them betray Azula.

    Katara is infuriatingly irrational. She should have never blamed the death of her mother on Zuko, only the person who gave the order and the person who carried it out deserve that fault, not the entire fire nation, including Zuko, who was a child when it happened.
    Also, her vengeful attitude makes her hypocritical since she has spent the series acting like she is above revenge and dark feelings/actions each time she tried to tell others (like Jet) that acting on revenge was wrong and that they should rise above like she pretended to.
