JTR Super Mario Bros 3 has some excellent music so has the rest of the series but SMB3 stands out to me, but in terms of game music in general I'd rate the Zelda series as having the best soundtracks. Sonic's music is great though don't get me wrong. Just wouldn't call it the best.

Only act 2 ignores some instruments here and there. Whereas other tracks, like Ice Cap, need seperate files because they do differ. For example, in act 1 in Ice Cap, by 1:30, it would have looped by now, but act 2 goes on that few more seconds.
Passing the barrel is easy... if you know how. Press and hold down when it moves down, and when it starts moving up press and hold up, and repeat until it goes low enough for you to pass it.
No aquatic mine zone from Sonic 2 on Genesis. The one where you can run under water along with all the ruins. you have these statues which shoots arrows at you and such..
I think sonic should go the popular direction for xbla games, "2.5D" graphics. That way you can have the great sonic gameplay that works, and graphics that don't look out of place in todays market.
No it's not broken, because the same thing happens on an emulator. It so happens that the ring sound effects might be played on the same channel of part of the notes of Act 2, causing one sound to cover the other for a split second. In this case the ring sound effects seem to always covers part of Act 2's music.
No, the sound card on the genesis can only convey so many sounds at once. When you collect a ring, in order to make the jingle, it needs to stop a certain instrument temporarily until the ring jingle finishes.

XD oh Nostalgia indeed :D
When i played that barrel part as a kid i had the luck of having a younger brother to be the immortal tails! We thought we had to constantly jump up and down to make it go all the way to the bottom so i can jump off quickly enough XD needless to say it worked but now that i know how to get passed it... the rage we had back then all seems so pointless XD
