It always baffles me to hear Americans say things like "How can this happen in America?", or "This is un-American!"
No it's not. It's very American. It's precisely what the US is, and has been. It's a flawed half-democracy built on slavery, where the Christian religion has brainwashed the majority of the population, where education levels are on par with poor countries, where life expectancy is tragically low, where racism, bigotry and violence are rampant. There's good too, but the US is not a shining beacon of perfection, never has been. Only Americans believe that.
You shouldn't be surprised about any of this Trumpy thing. For decades, the GOP has campaigned on racism, homophobia, transphobia, anti-science, sexism, they've lied to and manipulated their uneducated Christian voters just like the pastors in churches every week all around the country. It's a big scam built on bigotry and hatred.
As a non-American on the outside looking in, everything happening is exactly like it was before, only more cartoonishly blatant. But it's pure American tradition.
The sweetest revenge is putting Trump in JAIL!

Many of them were already. The trouble with Trump is/was that he committed so many crimes that it overwhelmed our legal system. Add to it that Trump did much internal damage to said legal system when he held the office of president some years ago. I hope we can understand that it took a little while for Merrick Garland to find and then hire Smith. However, as Trump has in the course of his lifetime been involved in nearly 5000 legal suites, he is pretty experienced in delay tactics and how to make the pursuit of any case against him expensive. Add to this problem that the Supreme Court has turned corruptly against us, the people, and SCTUS is backing Trump, we have a real struggle on our hands. Winning in a normal legal case is faster, but against the mafioso Trump and his corrupt SCOTUS, it is quite a difficult proposition.

They have been trying 4 years. Lawyers are stopping it. Some have been convicted and are serving time right now. Others are being yo-yoed around by the courts.
Some have been prosecuted. Others refused, resigned or were fired, and then got attacked by Trump (who his Supreme Court have since said is just fine).
