Gracias!!
Great stuff Andy! I really enjoyed seeing all the samples and different techniques as well as the thought processes.
Thank you Andy, wonderful work!!!! World class!!
Hi Andy,
Just wanted to say how brilliant and helpful your podcasts are. I'm in the middle of a refit of my Elizabethan 31ft Ketch and you are giving me the things I need to know to get it done. Many, many thanks. BTW I have subscribed to your website and will be following you there too. Nigel
nigel robinson Thanks Nigel !
I restored a. Antique wooden. Chris Craft cabin cruiser and used Sapele mixed in. Strategically inside. The cabin mostly on. Things like the galley cabinetry and counters in my opinion it looked. Like it was supposed to be there Ive always been told it was a “farmed” Mahogany and it doesnt have. The rot resistance that Honduras Mahogany has ? In the 90s. Architects and designers spaced the heck out of it on various commercial woodworking. Projects most people cant. Tell the difference between any of the species i find your channel very interesting. As ive been a lifetime boater that bought my first boat. In the late 70s way before You Tube videos luckily i lived in South Florida and there was plenty of people that were experienced in Bright work. And taught me a lot ive always. Favored Petit products myself especially their Spar Varnish that ive found looks best at around 7 to 8 coats usually i do not stain as I personally like the natural color brought out by the varnish i may add that i did do Woodworking as my profession for over 20 years untill a Traumatic Brain Injury forced me into early retirement for safety reasons Woodworking is still a passion of mine and a hobby although i am between homes and shops at the moment at my old job we mostly applied conversion varnishes to A lot of our projects so for me it was always a pleasure to apply a “ real” varnish job on my boats LOL We did however have a full time Finisher on our staff that did a fantastic job. At all of our staining and finishes
Thanks Andy!!! Amazing, great work!!! Hope the new shop is coming together for you!!
Fair winds!!
Doug
Nice. Thanks. Glad to see that it is as complicated as it is. Perhaps I'm not as dumb as I thought I was.
That's for the insight and knowledge Andy.
Great video, exactly what I was looking for. Thank you
!
Nicely done and very helpful, thanks!
Great video, was the black paint simply a black oil based? So was the overall mix 1/2 1/2 with stain or with some thinner as well.
Great videos, thank you. Can I varnish with polyester based clear coat on the oil based stain or will the 2 products react and flake the poly layer?
Hi Andy, I have been watching your videos for a quite while and learned a lot. I thank you for that. I am at the point of starting a challenging project of re-veneering my boat deck. I have a classic Finn of 1984 with a plywood deck. Unfortunately there is severe damage on the deck, which leaves me no choice but to repair and refinish. As there are so many repair spots already, I feel I have no other choice than to re-veneer the deck entirely. I am planning to buy 3 mtr long strips 0,6 mm thick, 3 mtr long and 18 cm wide. I plan to glue it on with West system epoxy, then when done apply a few coats of epoxy on the veneer and then refinish with a number of layers of 2c clear coat.
I haven't done any veneering projects before, though I am a seasoned woodworker. What I am concerned about is the joining of the strips, length and cross. Can you give me some guidance maybe? I intend to align the sides of the strips with a small block plane so that they perfectly match together, but what if I glue on a strip to the boat one day and then joining the next strip the next day. I am concerned that the tiniest bit of epoxy squeeze out, might cause the new strip to not perfectly align with the one I glued on the previous day. If I would clean it thoroughly, I might damage the strip that I already glued on the deck. What is your advice to tackle this?
Dear Andy,
thanks again for your truly helpful videos.
I'm currently restoring a 1972 Boston Whaler 13" and I'm replacing the rotten mahogany seats and your video is super appreciated.
Is there always the need to stain mahogany or it could be left natural under the varnish?
Thanks again and have a nice day,
Marco
Building a coin cabinet and want the frame possibly mohagany/walnut stain might use pine to stain then shellac is that good ?.
I appreciate your nice and helpful videos
أحمد الشهبندر Thank you!
this color is so hard to find without mixing, but.. nice to see so many wood stains and applications. :] too good tc
What paint would you recommend for a mahogany lap stake hull? It is a 1962 vintage, is kept on trailer, has not been used in 15 years but garage kept in dry climate and in good shape. The hull is painted white and has a copper based bottom. Paint is flaking in dispersed small patches. What would be a recommended surface prep? Paint remover? Thanks for help.
Does this finish look good for kitchen cabinets?
Great job, Andy! Have you ever noticed hair-like single black hard fibers in sapele? I'm building bench seats for a seventies Whaler and the sapele I got is full of those streaks and when I sand it down it leaves a coarse black sawdust...
BTW I didn't stain it and it turned out beautiful!
Nice job! Hope to see more of the work on that runabout! I have to put new gunwales on my CC Sportsman and appreciate the schooling on the staining. Should I be using the African mahogany you used?
I really enjoy watching your videos and have found a lot of great information. I do have a question regarding teak refinishing. In the spring I want to refinish the teak on the outside of my boat. I have seen some videos where they have used epoxy first and then coated it with varnish. The teak on our boat is original and is about 40 years old. I believe that teak oil is the only thing that has ever been used on it. I am wondering what you would recommend for refinishing.
Did you mix up the flat sawn ribbon grain and the quarter sawn fine grain description?
Really enjoyed your videos and descriptions holed up this winter during snow storms.
Thanks Andy, now I can throw out my 8th grade wood shop staining education!
All of your videos are a learning experience, keep up the good work. One question, how many coats of varnish would be "normal" and do you sand/scuff between coats?
Excellent video. Suggest you make it clear you're using stain WITH FILLER, not just stain. It would be interesting to compare results of staining with filler, staining without filler, and staining with separate previous filling. Thank you.
wow nice, Can you stain veneer?
Hey Andy. I know this video is quite old, but I'd like to add a comment/caution. You mentioned you were sticking the rags outside in the snow as it's below zero and frozen rags won't ignite. While that's true, BLO and other oils won't evaporate in those temps, either. My dad stuck his BLO rags in a bucket outside in subzero temps. Unfortunately, he brought them back in a month later and put them in the trash can and when they thawed, they combusted and burned his house to the ground. IMO, any such rags should be taken outdoors and burned intentionally so they never have the opportunity to combust accidentally.
Nice video and explainations, it will help me for my guitar project. It is usually recommended to use a grain filler.. but you are not using it. Is there any reason for that? What is the difference by using a grain filler? Thanks!
+manu777tube This is actually a grain filler and dye :-) Works great!!
+BoatworksToday All right now it's clear for me! Thanks for your answer
I'm finishing a African Mahogany exterior door exposed to the elements, finishing with 4-5 coats of spar varnish. I'm wondering if boat builders ever use woodgrain fillers, and if so which product? I've researched many and the companies say for interior use only.
How many coats of varnish would you recommend for a swim platform
We are putting a fresh coat of pettit high build on our 62 CC Ski boat. is it ok to varnish over the lettering at this time. We have 15 coats of High build and then the lettering and numbers over that . We will apply one or two coats of varnish at this time . Thanks for your great videos.
+paul dolph I would not apply varnish over the lettering.. Best to do all the finish coats and apply the lettering last.. Hope this helps!
Thanks for sharing.
Hey Andy, what if I wanted to apply a coat of epoxy to seal the wood before I put the coats of varnish? Should the epoxy or the stain go first?
If you're going to be working with any kind of oil based product (the stain is oil based) then epoxy really should not be used at all. Epoxy base coats should only go over bare clean wood. Hope this makes sense!
@@boatworkstoday thanks!! What if it was an water or alcohol based stain?
I *THINK* west says that alcohol or water based stains are ok to use but I'd have to double check that. Their customer service is great to talk to, might be worth a quick call to see what they recommend :-)
I don't believe you can put epoxy over varnishes , shellscs or oil based poly or paint .
You can use epoxy over most everything else but not oil based anything .
The very end shows all the samples with a finish but does not identify which color was used. Then it seams all the samples were shuffled around. Can you help?
Exactly what I was thinking. Kind of like my mid 1970’s high school essays...really detailed to begin with but with a “They all lived happily ever after. The End” cliff hanger! But that’s because I HATED essays!😂
Where’s the rest of the video when varnish dries comparison :-(
the oil base paint would dry so fast I wouldn't think you would have enough working time on a large piece
yep burlap!
To me the best looking filler stain is the one that looks the least stained. And all those samples look very stained. Some worse than others. A more golden stain should be among them which is more pale so that one application errs on the light side-giving people that option. A second application can darken. But all those you used are too lurid.
African mahogany probably isn't what was used originally on your boat.. Although it is a common substitute (because of cost), Honduran mahogany would likely be the best match.
You shouldn't work out of your supply can. you take the chance of contaminating it. You should also filter the varnish into a separate container.
Dennis Cline On a job, you're right. On some sample pieces for personal use I didn't see the point.. Nonetheless, good point!
Why PU solid color wood finish are not available in US? Such a beautiful finish and cannot be achieved with all options of staining that we have in stores. Feels like third world country….😤
Do we have to watch this comercial over and over and over again??
Of course not. Just stop clicking on "play", dumbass.
I have been told many times that the African Mahogany is pronounced the same as the soccer player's name "PE'LE"
execution of wood... inclusive burial under mud.
What type of stain is that, Minwax is telling me that the only stain for exterior is gel stain. Like it's in the Bible on page 1 of genius. I see most 99.99% of stains say interior they're saying all other gonna fade no matter of top coat
How many coats of varnish, and do you sand between coats
