    If you made it run, it would be shame to leave it yellow like that. Use a generous amount of H2O2 and restore it to it's former glory, Wicked!

    These consoles are insane cheap in japan and crazy expensive in europe, but i wonder if we can swap the drives. If you can, you can actually buy a whole console with controllers for the same price as the Drive!!

    There are four types of lasers for the Dreamcast, two by Yamaha and two by Samsung. The 1st Yamaha one is 5V (for VA0 motherboard revision). It has no voltage sign on the metal shield and it has a red rubber damper instead of a blue one. The 2nd one is identical to Samsung lasers in appearance but it does say Yamaha on the shielding. Lasers by Samsung are identical except for the fact some are made in Korea and others in China. All 4 are interchangable between VA0 and VA1 motherboard revisions.

    • @JBSuper
      @JBSuper 3 роки тому +1

      So, there's no risk using 5V Yamaha into VA1 console? Will not wear out by low voltage? I'm currently using this setup and started to worry about my GD-ROM drive and I'm looking for 3.3V Yamaha unit.

    • @АнтонЧескидов-д2г

    • @JBSuper
      @JBSuper 3 роки тому

      Yeah, for a while. But I'm using this setup since 2 years and I'm worrying day by day. Anyway, it's working fine, but I have no clue if low voltage could wear out this GD-ROM.

    • @АнтонЧескидов-д2г
      @АнтонЧескидов-д2г 3 роки тому

      @@JBSuper I guess the opposite (higher voltage) would be way worse. After all it's been 2 years with no negative effects so it's not likely to fail due to voltage difference. Plus, 1.3V difference is no big deal honestly.

    Before ordering a new drive, you could try adjusting the potentiometer on the laser head to give it more oomph to read discs, although it's probably just a temporary fix.
    Also, a word of advice: don't buy laser head replacements from ebay or amazon. even if the listings say they're brand new, they are not! I did the mistake and went through 7 replacements until I got one that would read at least some of my discs. total scam.
    In the end I also ordered the whole drive replacement and it works like a charm.

    • @mp-fe1qv
      @mp-fe1qv 2 роки тому +2

      any chance you could direct me towards that 'whole drive replacement'? or a part number?

  • @JurassicDavidy
    @JurassicDavidy Рік тому

    I know this might sound crazy but I was wondering if the replacement sounds exactly the same as the original one? I just love the original sound, its so nostalgic, playing Dreamcast without the original sound just wouldn't be the same.

    Boy i miss the time when i first bought and unboxing this baby back in 1999, a first true next gen home console before it got wiped out by Playstation 2 supremacy, does anyone know it has many coded names (Whitebelt/Blackbelt/Dural/Katana/Guppy/Shark) before it was called Dreamcast.. And Yes it was white color 😅

    I think the problem is not strictly the lasers as they aren't of lesser quality compare to others from that era. The problem rely on the use of crappy smd capacitors rated at 1000h at 85C, knowing on how electronic can run hot it doesn't take long for them to reach their lifetime. If you were using an ESR meter, you will be seeing that most of the smd capacitors on the controller board will be out of specs. Fully recapping the controller board has done wonders for me for multiple system. Premature wear of the lens is all linked with how easy we could be play burned games. For samsung's dvd drive on the xbox, it is the 47uf caps that are problematic, on the dreamcast gd-rom controller board, it's the 100uf caps that are generally out of specs. Also when recapping, I am using through hole capacitor Panasonic FR rated 5000h at 105C rather than going back with smds.

      Look up "my mate Vince Dreamcast" he didn't figure it out but did prove the fault is on the board and not the laser.

    Pretty cool. Dreamcast is a easy fix. Replacing laser would be ideal if you already have a good collection of dreamcast games. The DC plays rips fine as long as it's not the newer models.
    I ended up getting the mode. With a 1tb ssd in there. Also got a mode for the Saturn. I gotta save up for the ps1 thou and find a modder. You can use usb, sata harddrive or sd card. Maybe something ill get next year.
    I used to have a fake gdemu. Played games fine but did have some issue's with some games. But most worked out fine.
