  • The MacPherson suspension (or MacPherson strut suspension) is a type of independent car suspension that was developed by American engineer Earl MacPherson in the 1940s and has become popular in the automotive industry. It serves as the basic structure of suspension for many modern cars and offers a good balance between comfort and handling. A distinctive feature of this suspension is the strut, which serves as both a shock absorber and a control arm.

      Thank you for appreciating my work!:) In the MacPherson suspension, there is no upper control arm (its function is taken over by the strut). The upper control arm is used, for example, in multi-link suspension and double wishbone suspension.

    • @ArneChristianRosenfeldt
      @ArneChristianRosenfeldt 6 місяців тому

      It is important that the lower A-arm extends outwards downwards. Then on compression the wheel moves outwards and the coil-over increases camber. For extreme compression, camber decreases again. Long short double wishbone increases camber until the tryre hits the wheel well@@429thunderjet2

      Airplanes have hard points. I thought that car manufacturers can weld sheets of different thickness?

    • @commodorenut
      @commodorenut 8 місяців тому +1

      Many SUVs these days are unibody, just like cars. No “safer” and in fact, more likely to roll over during a swerve or accident due to the higher centre of gravity.
      Full frame pickups & the like may appear stronger, but the frame itself flexes too, many of them even worse than a unibody which spreads the load though the entire passenger cell. The passenger cell of a typical sedan is also stronger than an SUV due to the truss like construction incorporating the rear seat bulkhead and firewall structures for additional strength. By comparison, SUVs are an open wobbly box at the back.
      Look at late model sports cars and performance sedans - their unibody is extremely stiff, and will lift a wheel off the road on a tight uphill bend, where a full-frame pickup will flex and twist in the same circumstance. You only have to look at the gap between the cabin and bed, and where the rubber “gap filler” rubs due to frame flex.
      Even a 2007 Subaru liberty (legacy) I had back then would lift a wheel off backing from my steep road into my steep driveway. I could almost balance it on the 2 diagonally opposite wheels, and it would teeter and bump the other 2 on the road like a seesaw. Can’t do that in a floppy pickup or SUV……

      @jamesrindley6215 8 місяців тому

      Depends on your criteria for judging it. It's cheap, simple and low-maintenance. It might not be the highest performance setup but for most people that doesn't matter, they just need a vehicle that gets them around cheaply and reliably.

    • @petea7323
      @petea7323 8 місяців тому

      @@jamesrindley6215 that was where I was going with it. It’s easy to change a spring or strut. Some other suspension system repairs can be complicated or expensive. For normal road use, they can provide a comfortable ride and generally long lasting/durable.
