  • Today we have a video that was inspired by a subscriber comment. Thanks to DarkenedCharliXo! In today's video we repair the music box mechanism in the Strawberry Shortcake snow globe that we repaired in Ep 45. ( • Ep. 45 - Strawberry Sh... ). I did not realize that the music box was not working until after we reassembled the base. In the video I mentioned that I would just replace it with a spare music box mechanisms later. Our subscriber brought to our attention that the mechanism may play a song that is specific to the theme of the globe. Most of the music mechanism issues we see are with Christmas themed globes and they usually play a Christmas song so we just got into the habit of swapping out the mechanism. We had no idea what song this mechanism played since the music comb teeth were fused together by rust and corrosion. In this case we decided to see if we could save the original song. We learned a couple of things doing this that will make it much easier to repair these mechanisms going forward which we show in the video. It would have really helped had we known this when we repaired the the mechanism in Ep. 17 Santa's Living Room ( • Ep.17 - "Santa's Livin... ). We soaked the mechanism in vinegar to remove the rust and corrosion. Once the rust and corrosion was eaten away there was just enough metal left to play the song once before the comb flew apart and the regulator snapped. The music barrel survived and after two replacement mechanisms and three combs later we recovered the song. The name of the song is.... You'll have watch the video!!!
    Thanks for watching!

    Comb's the wrong key, and you actually want about 85% forward travel on the comb contact. Loved the video though. A beautiful technology that I see less and less. It's sad

      We had another subscriber make a similar observation. We visually matched up the combs and it looked like a match. We didn't know at the time that there were many combs out there with different tunings. My ear for tuning is not that refined. I play guitar but I have to use a tuner, I can't tune by ear like some musicians. Thank you for sharing that information with us.

      I wanted to add or I guess confirm your theory; at 7:50 the combs on the front do look the same but its he back that makes the tune play perfectly and I found that out with another UA-cam video which is why I always keep my keys and drums together or it can sound a little off (which you do seem to figure out). It was such a shame to hear about the original comb but you can buy mechanisms that play "You Are My Sunshine" between $2-$10 depending. I am honestly really proud of you as well as a MEGA impressed you found a comb that plays the song beautifully.

      Yes, it can take some work to get the connection right. We have had some difficulty with those connections as well.

    I put a music box from one of my globes in a vinegar bath because it was rusted. I'm not sure if it didn't turn before I did this, but it doesn't turn now. Is that recoverable?

      Hi. That has happened to us. The rust and corrosion appears to have impacted the spring assembly of the music mechanism. You have a couple of options. If you are not concerned about keeping the original song you can find a cheap old used snow globe in the thrift store or flea market and use the music box mechanism from it. If you want to preserve the original song you can take that replacement mechanism from the one you find at the thrift store and take the comb and barrel from your globe and install then on the replacement mechanism. As a last resort there is a link in the video description to The Music Box company where you can purchase music boxes. I haven't actually done it but we heard that if you don't see a music box listed that plays your song you can request a music box that plays that song and I believe they will make it. Hope that helps.

      It sounds like you are missing the winder key for the music box. They sell them online or you can buy a cheap used snow globe or other item that has a music box and use the key from it. Here is one that is on sale on ebay, hopefully this is what you are looking for:

      @@snowgloberescue8887 it was at 13:38. the metal thing you twisted out with the needle nose pliers? that was in the top of the barrel? i can still email you a picture if you like i just figured this might be quicker lol. mine refuses to go back in on the new mechanism!

    • @snowgloberescue8887
      @snowgloberescue8887  2 роки тому +1

      @@breannaadkins5769 Oh, OK. You are referring to the music drum retainer screw. We have never twisted one of those all of the way out. It is a bit cumbersome to deal with. You will have to carefully line up those threads again. However, the first time that we ever replaced one of those barrels we did not know that the retaining screws were threaded and we actually bend the two clamp arms out to release it and then bent the clamp back in place after replacing the barrel and screw. You can check out Episode 17 - Santa's Living Room around the 24:10 point. Hope that helps.

    This hurts to watch. Please never use vinegar it's corrosive and can damage the metal further. From what I've read it seems like isopropyl alcohol and electrical contact cleaner are safe to use

    • @snowgloberescue8887
      @snowgloberescue8887  Рік тому +2

      I first learned about using vinegar to remove rust back when I was in the military. I have been using that method for about 40 years. I have had other substances suggested such as coca cola and lemon juice. What makes these work is that they all contain some type of acid which dissolves the corrosion. Some work better that others but vinegar in my experience works the best. The problem is how long you leave it in the liquid. The acid is not strong and only affects the good metal if it is left in there too long. I have never known isopropyl alcohol or electrical contact cleaner to dissolve and remove rust. I have used both extensively. However, the next time we have some rusty parts to clean up we will try soaking them those two and see what happens. I don't expect the results to be as good as with vinegar but the only way to confirm is by trying the experiment. Thanks for the suggestion.

      Hallo
      Ich verwende 5% Zitronensäure das zwar etwas langsamer wirkt, aber gefühlt das Metall weniger angreift. Bei diesen Spieluhren ist natürlich nicht nur hochwertiges Eisen verbaut, sondern Zinn, billiges Blech und Kunststoff, alles mit Ablaufdatum. Wenn der Rost so stark wie hier ist, war es überhaupt ein Wunder das die Mechanik wieder so gut funktioniert. Viele Grüße aus Österreich.
