- It's rare that I get to fly with just one student but sometimes it happens when I only have 'one student' for a lesson!
So, I jumped in my trusty F-5E and got airborne too, to deliver one on one personal RAF flying instruction as taught in my Shadowlands Online Flying Training School!

man just by watching i always learn so much, i need to join your school, i really do, just give me some time, my mom died 7months ago and im still numb, DCS and MSFS have been good distractions along with my Dear Lord, cheers Buddy
Sorry to hear of your loss, mate.
Sorry about your loss, we have several guys in the school who have experienced similar, it can help to immerse yourself with the syllabus I set - takes your mind off things and the guys can be a very good support group but keep flying both DCS and MSFS - I like to glide over Lake Como, that's pretty relaxing.
Sorry to hear that bud, keep flying forward my friend.
Sorry for your loss Marco.
Hi Marco
Sorry to hear about your loss
I went through the same with my mother passing a few years ago .
I was on Shadowlands at the time and decided to stop mostly everything .
Recently I’ve got back into flight simulation and I’m going to be back in Shadowlands with an an amazing instructor and team of flyers .
Hope to see you soon 👍
I haven't flown my F-5 for a while, it makes me want to get back in it, It's a fun jet!
Great to watch. Takes me back to 1FTS!
Packing a parachute was above my ability , the recipient would be showered in tools I left in the canopy on deployment .Blow flying a jet , when you have to know words like reciprocal
I even struggle to sit in cattle class in the back of a Ryan air flight , whilst supping lager . You are a good man
Thanks for that Tim and Snips, might be time to dust off the HOTAS.
In the early 90's when I completed all my PPL Ratings and Multi another Pilot offered Flights in his Jet Provost at £400 per hour and get to take off and land it under supervision. I forgot his name now but it was awesome. I believe he founded Transair Aviation at Blackbushe but unsure about it.And yes it was the Jet Provost where one of the Ejection Seats fell out !
Is that the one the seat fell out?

Being a GA LSA pilot your taxi checks are smooth and clear like the hsi with left and right check change of heating
Watching youtube, it's always the radio talk that bamboozles me. Obviously if you're not used to them or you're not sure what to expect, it takes a minute to decipher what was said and what was intended; they get ahead of you very quickly.
Enjoyed seeing the team work and hearing the comms, nice video 🙌
Nice work Guys!
I really hope you continue this series! This is a really nice instructional video and good DCS content always gets a subscription from me!
Awesome! I have this F-5 but I’m yet to learn it. Binding the buttons can be a pain, so I was hoping that the WinWing profile’s in the app would be a good starting point.
I recently moved back to TrackiR as the HUD in the F-16C looked a little fuzzy. Even in the Crystal. It’s much easier to learn in 2D and relaxing. Swings & Roundabout’s etc.
Even though I'm not good with heights i can imagine you would feel pretty safe up there providing you have a clue what your doing
I love this sim. I've not flown it for a little while, but I've flown it and Falcon for years. Great fun! 😊
Brilliant video once again. I use a radio scanner at home as I’m in mid wales and get so much military air traffic, such as hawks from valley. As you were and instructor, it would be really interesting to see a video on an example sortie using the flight sim, that would happen at mid level, FL100-FL150, with all the calls and things that you work on in these drills. Cheers!
Also always watch for "icing" in Active Cumulus Clouds !
I like you set up a winter day scene so we can spot 2 ship. ✈️🫡
DCS is brilliant!
Have a couple of questions.
1) Do you fly the Normandy or Channel map for training? I'd think it would be very convenient for you, as you were born there and know the "lay of the land" so to speak. The "home field advantage" as we'd say here in the US. I realize the architecture wouldn't be current, and metro areas would be considerably smaller, but you'd almost have an instinctive feel about where things on the ground are "supposed to be" so to speak.
2) Wondering if you're considering the Phantom in any of your training programs? Although the UK didn't use the E model, they DID fly the Phantom, both RN and RAF. I'd guess that a lot of the instruments and training, would cross over, and you'd probably know a LOT of Phantom folks. I think it would be an EXCELLENT IFR trainer. True it doesn't have a curtain, but it has full instruments and controls, and, as is commonly known, the view from the back seat aren't exactly scenic. Put the instructor up front to make sure the student doesn't lawn dart, and work IFR procedures.
We are currently running a Phantom class, yes - all included in the subscription.
Absolutely love this Tim, I need DCS in my life again!! Kids are older now and I've got time again... took me at least a day or two for perfect PAT in landing on the carrier and air refuel.... I've just learned so much as an ex GA pilot before the 1st kid was born, they ain't cheap so flying stopped at 17 hours sadly.... it is what it is/ was.. they come 1st. Nice informative video ❤😎🙏
Come join the school, fly with friends :)
@@FastJetPerformance Tim at present im saving for a high spec PC, my other is well under spec now unfortunately but I'll definitely join your school mate as soon as I can ;-)
Man I miss this sim. Computer died back in March and too broke to afford another gaming PC 😭
Been watching vids like this to fly vicariously through other people 😄
You don't need a beefy pc to run dcs. Just buy a good motherboard, at least 32gbram and an ssd/m.2. Then get a second hand gtx1070 and 9 series i5 or something.. You wont be running a pimax crystal on that thing, but you can still play the game while you save up to upgrade the graphics card and processor.
Hi Tim, hope you're keeping well. ever thought of doing a VIZ comic? Like a dirty version of Spry?
Not sure if you're skipping it for training purposes, but the F-5 auto flaps are usually used for takeoff and general flight, fixed and up thumb switch positions being for fuel consumption or best range.
As I understand it full and up on the flap lever are overrides for faults or damage.
Great jet to learn on, a handful and prone to speed and trim changes, other jets are pretty easy after learning in the F-5.
Part training and part a binding issue for the fixed flap part. We use Auto for take off and flying about as per the flight manual, fixed for loitering with stores if we remember to, but I do tend to tell them to select Full flap for landing, which auto will give anyway with gear down, but it builds habits for other jets.
Thanks for the comment, this was lesson one also so we don't worry too much about the circuit and landing at this stage,
Thought as much, I noticed you were in auto later so did assume it was probably to get in the habit. We learned formation and a crappy approximation of tac-turns with the F-5. Really fun satisfying stuff.
@@mostevil1082 we do tac turns in the school, guys get good at them eventually.
3:50 "level off at ten", then blaaaasting through.... 😁
These comments are why I tend to not make DCS vids
I enjoyed this. Thanks.
@@WilliamWarburton-to4xx Thank you, William - what a nice and positive comment.
@pongokamerat8601 OMG I just subscribed to your channel in the hope I'd see something better, nothing. I unsubscribed.
@pongokamerat8601 are you any relation to Richard Lord by any chance?
Just found your channel through the f-5 circuits video. Something I'm going to use as I learn the F-5. I'm curious now with the announcement of the T-38, if you'll be using that for instruction?
We will assess it as a School to see if it can go in front of the F-5 as an instructional platform.
Military still using TACAN
Nice video Tim, keen to join the flight school. I'm set up on the F-18 though, is that OK for BFJT?
Sure is, guys fly F5 and F18 in PRIMO (BFJT) - you can fly either or both.
Hi Tim, do you do any training in twin seaters? I know the Mirage F1BE has a sort of dual control which is pretty cool (both inputs are averaged similar to an airbus)
We use the MB-339 sometimes and will look to using the T-38C when it comes in soon.
Hi Tim, what setup do you recommend for your flight school? Should students have VR a 3 screen setup or does it not matter. Obviously a gaming computer is required to run the game. What controller do you use? HOTAS, Xbox controller, keyboard! I only ask because I'm super interested. I love the concept and would like to get the best experience.
I advise most people to join on the EXPERIENTIA tier, it's about $10 a month and the cheapest and allows you to ask questions from loads of students who are using all sorts of different setups - it's a gold mine for that sort of thing. The question is huge - I have a 5 screen setup because I instruct but most students have a single screen, track IR, a 3060 RTX card is a good starting point and a Thrustmaster 16000M stick and throttle (or just stick) will sort you out.
I recommend this system pretty much always as a very good system but this would be an 8/10 and you could easily fly with a 6/10

But you could easily fly with this... www.palicomp.co.uk/intel-i5-luminosity-pro-kab2-review
BEFORE YOU BUY, I would ask questions in the school as students know where the deals are or will trade/sell kit/old computers and big savings can be had.

^ have a look at those vids
Did I see you in Purton /Royal Wooton Basset today ?
Negative :)
Any reason you use T38s ? I’ve watched some of “ Movers “ videos flying the real thing and it looks like a real handful , even compared with the F16/18s he flew before
We use F-5E but the T-38C is coming to DCS soon apparently - they don't have Hawk in DCS.
Any chance you can remove the music from these videos?
It's a shame you said "sometimes it's a bit of a chore" ... ref circuits ... because I was thinking of getting DCS and the equipment to join your school and, as a non pilot in RL, I would not want to feel you teaching me was a chore ie boring for you. I'll decide now what to do because I wouldn't fancy having a FI who I might irritate due to total inexperience. Or am I missing something.
My rig is only a 12gb VRAM RTX 3060 so might not be able to play it anyway. 64mb RAM might help who knows. I'm keen to try this but now worried I'll just p1ss the FI off.
You probably will, especially if you are this defeatist in real life. It's a flight school and I expect certain behaviours - I treat my students as if they were RAF students so leave your negativity at the door and, if you do decide to join, I'll decide whether I want you in my school.
The top guys who join WANT to be there. Also, your computer is fine, it's a good rig - the reason you don't know whether 64Gb is good for DCS is because you haven't googled it - do the work, get yourself flying and then look to join if you feel you need help.
You won't get to fly with me one on one, it's very rare - you'll be in a class of 5 to 10 normally - private lessons are very costly although I help all who need it.
Now, get a positive attitude, you have no idea how RAF students are taught and, if you want to know, my school is the only place to find out but, let me tell you, they are not as negative as you so chin up!
@@FastJetPerformance I like what you do but your comments are a bit cutting ... this is not the RAF, nothing like it, it's a game and perhaps you could consider just bring a bit kinder to people about whom you know nothing of their own careers and lives and what might contribute to negativity. Anyway, thanks for helping me make my decision.
@@mrnexus8seven949 no worries, join the Grimreapers servers, they'll take you I'm sure - when you want to learn as part of a group that holds each other accountable, then it'll be my school you turn to. Good luck to you.
Sometimes DCS is a "bit of a chore" as you have to be disciplined and practice the mundane stuff like circuits, A2A refuelling. its like anything in life if you wanna get better/good at some thing it takes a grind and having the discipline to not just sack off doing the building blocks. Tim is a fantastic FI and I would bet you a tenner that you'd learn just as much from the rest of the bunch too ;) Total newbies with zero experience are welcomed with the same support and vigor as a RL pilot.
Mate, Tim is an experienced fighter instructor for the RAF. I'm assuming you've never done flight training IRL, because I've never had an instructor who wasn't "cutting with their remarks" as you put it.
Do you know why FI's are so ruthless? Because they don't want you dying. See, the thing with airplanes is if you make a mistake, odds are you're dead. So this isn't like any other form of education, because in any other learning environment mistakes are encouraged as a learning opportunity. In aircraft, mistakes are lethal.
You wouldn't know this unless you had real flight time. This starts from day 1 with any instructor, civilian or military, who's worth their salt. That's because they've usually seen students die. It's just the reality of flying, and they want you to live.
So don't jump to conclusions without understanding that flying is a totally different beast than anything else you've ever done or will do. Now, the whole point of flying full intensity in DCS is that you train the way you fly. So if you relax and muck around in the sim, odds are you'll do the same IRL. Therefore, to keep everything consistent, Tim trains with about the same intensity in the sim as IRL.
By the way, this is the reason this is such a unique experience, as there is no other place in the world offering this level of training as far as I'm aware.
