Great movie. Lee Marvin may not have had the greatest vocals, but honestly, it worked. I don’t know if it’s weird or not, but certain places make me think of certain music. I imagine listening to this song while driving through the mountains.

"Paint Your Wagon"'s director Josh Logan said later that Lee Marvin's behavior on the set -- fueled by heavy drinking -- made this film the most trying of his career. "Not since Attila the Hun swept out of Asia, bringing 500 years of total darkness, has there been a man like Lee Marvin."

You put on great music with harmonica, lots of backing vocals, a deep bass voice, Lee Marvin can't push his voice, so he talks or hums, but all that makes us a great cocktail ...
This song was a huge #1 hit in the UK. It kept not 1 but 2 of the biggest "#1's that never were" off the top spot. These two records were the Beatles last single - let it be - & the Jacksons - I want you back. Yet dispite being so huge in the UK, earning Lee a gold disc in the process, it did nothing anywhere else in the world. How so?

The ability or inability to make a pleasant sound while singing is but one element of funning in this entertaining gem of a movie that I loved as a girl, and revisit with pleasure as time goes on.
Lee Marvin fought in the Pacific during world war 2. He was only 17 when he joined. He assaulted over 20 plus beaches the last one was at the Battle of Saipan where most of his platoon were killed. He got shot in the rear which severely damaged his sciatic nerve. He received numerus medals including a Navy medal with a v. You can read more if you look him up. Finally he was injured so bad in battle he was finally sent him in 1945 before the war was over. He was a scout sniper with the 4th Marine division.
