This YA book made me unfathomably angry

- In this video I have no choice but to wage a passionate, highly personal war against Matthew Crow, author of The Brilliant Light of Amber Sunrise. The novel in question is a dull, misogynistic window into the world of a teenage proto-incel. The Kissing Booth 2 had more depth.

So we are just going to pretend two popular people/I’m assuming athletic people are just not going to have ANY kind of depth of grief after being diagnosed with cancer that could very well be terminal?!? And to not even make Kelly clinging to her superficiality to avoid thinking/accepting her diagnosis?? Oh yes this was definitely written by a man
I love YA novels where the protagonists say and do things that would've made them the villains in a different novel - like in this case, hogging the tv and not letting a cancer patient watch the one show she wants to watch for an hour.
the breakfast club is such an interesting movie for this guy to pick...... what on earth does he think the movie is about if he doesnt get the extremely obvious like, attempt at humanising and understanding that people are more complex than whatever dumb high school archetype you might place them in. the movie literally SAYS ALL OF THAT OUT LOUD at the end.

So the girl who is also diagnosed with a life threatening illness asks to sit in a room for 30 minutes to watch one episode of a tv show and she gets yelled at and told she doesn’t read 😭 i would be calling the nurses immediately wtfff
Worst thing is if it was her and the athletic boy hogging the room all day and Amber asked to watch a show aimed at men or women the labels of victim and bully would have switched instantly. But apparently the sin that is pretty little liars is big enough tip the scale and make the bullying justified

For real though, the author seems like he is one of those dudes that refuse to work on their personal appearance and hygiene and then act surprised when people don't want to touch them. It is wild that this is such a blatant TFIOS rip-off while it ignores the…everything about TFIOS. Even the not-like-other-girls things…one of the things I thought was refreshing about TFIOS is that, while Hazel’s illness has certainly given her a perspective that her peers might lack, she also regularly marathoned America’s Next Top Model? I think that was genuinely the first time I read about a female YA character who unapologetically liked a “girly” thing without being judged by other characters, herself, or the narration. Which is incredibly sad, but it was notable, so when someone trying to write their own version of that story undoes one of the unique things about it, it is baffling to me.
Ugh I hate running into those girls who don't move their faces 🙄 what does that even mean???
