This unit vs minidsp SHD?
Absolutely love it. One of those units that has sounded the most balanced and neutral in my system with no sign of harshness.
Add in the tons and tons of features and it's absolutely cooking.
Cooking for sure I have been using the RME-ADI-2 Pro AD/DAC for producing youtube videos for a year it is the Bomb!!
which one did you buy? A&K Sp2000 or iBasso dx320 or Fioo m17 or iBasso Dx320 or shanlang m9? I am soo confused should I buy Hugo 2 DAC or DAP or RME ADI 2 DAC?
My topping D90 simply died , I’m now comparing the RME , gungnir , denafrits aries , SMSL M400, matrix mini pro 3 …..watching too many videos’s but do enjoy this channel , it’s more my level especially $$ . Good job
I enjoyed your video. I just bought and ADI-2 FS recently. I am Loving it!! One thing you did not mention: I really like the loudness feature, which works differently than past loudness buttons on other equipment... It keeps the the bigger dynamics in place as you decrease the volume- sounds very cool- makes your lower volume music more vibrant. I highly recommend the RME ADI-2 for audiophiles looking to to reach their end-game set-up faster.
I observed that people buy extra amp to connect their DAC/AMP or DAPS? Why there is a need to connect to Amp although RME ADI 2 DAC has amp in it? I am trying to understand the logic. Also, which one is better do you think Hugo 2 or RME ADI 2 DAC? Thank you

All my sound system from power regulator to speakers are all along one wall.
My living space is the opposite side of the room so at some point I need wireless controle .My prima Luna integrated amp does not have it nor does the RME -DAC .
Can I add something to the signal path that will give me "mid fi" [horrid word] wireless controle, preferably with internet radio at least?
I have had mine for a couple months now. Really like it. I use it as a DAC/pre amp. Love the balanced outputs.
Great Review and I concur completely! I have been using the RME-ADI-2 Pro AD/DAC for producing youtube videos for a year it is the Bomb!!
I have had one for about six months. Somewhat complicated to learn but once you learn the basics you're good to go. And I like you have replaced equipment just with this one unit. I really enjoy that the EQ availability.

@@kaankucuk1612 The ADI 2 dac does not have a built-in amp, it is signal only. There are many other dacs that do have built-in amps, they may not be to your liking in sound however.
@@bnghjtyu767 ı got you, also, Can I ask, U12T or UM Melody MeskII is better IEM?
@@kaankucuk1612 I'm sorry I cannot say because I am not familiar with those units.
I love mine!!! just an awesome tool. Your review is spot on with my assessment and experience :)
my RME kicks ass. its the heart of my system. Ive had it since the month it was released.
You must be wealthy.
@@sp6450 Huh? This is a sub-$1000 DAC/Preamp/DSP/Headphone Amp. By "heart" of the system I'm sure they mean that they're only using speakers and a power amp in addition. That means he's saving money. A lot.
Did you get the newer ADI-2 with the better AKM chip? There are two versions out. I've had both and as silly as I feel saying this, I did hear a difference on one of my systems using Buchardt S400s.
@@antoniobolgnameyerwe3844 what differences did you hear? I have the older version
@@h2ophilterto be fair, I might not have had the settings the same between the two different versions after I started tweaking the DSP/equalization settings. The overall setup is pretty simple - ICE Power 1200 AS2 DIY power amp feeding Buchardt S400s with the RME DACs as sources. But before using the Loudness or Treble/Bass adjustments on either, I found that the newer version of the RME ADI 2 had a little bit more detail and "air" than the previous model. It was minimal for sure and could have been influenced by any number of other factors. I sold the older version shortly thereafter, but wish I had held onto it a little longer for more detailed/controlled A/B listening comparisons. Right now I'm doing a kind of comparison test between the newer one and the Topping D90 with AKM's flagship chip. I prefer the latter if no tone/DSP controls are allowed, but I like the RME if I'm "allowed" to turn on the Loudness feature (plus it has a great headphone amp, the Topping doesn't).
Do you use the Loudness or Treble/Bass adjustments when you're listening to the RME? I always keep the Loudness on, pretty much - adds real punch and meatiness to pretty much any recording I've listened to. Especially for background music. Another interesting thing I figured out is that you can use the Loudness feature and throw in Treble and Bass increases on top of that - works great for lower volume listening. All done in the digital domain so any distortion introduced is infinitesimal unlike the old analog EQs.
Interesting that you should mention the Schiit Gungnir Multibit. I use my Gumby in my two channel system. I'm using the ADI-2 DAC FS for my headphone collection...........Best of both worlds.
Great review without saying more than needed and a short comparison too! Cheers
Thankyou!
-Thujan
I’ve been using the updated version with improved AKM 4493 DAC chip and SDLD filter. I found this newer version to have better (wider and deeper) soundstage and better air when using the SDLD filter over the version in the video.
It’s just such a great value and mine compared very well with a Chord Hugo TT2, trading blows in absolute soundstage (chord) versus lack of grit/grain and tonality (RME). It’s a steal in ADI-2 FS v2 form. You can identify the new version by an oval Kensington lock aperture in the rear and the new remote.
You got me very interested in the updated version now!
-Thujan
nbt studio The SDLD filter (short delay low dispersion) is within a small fraction of a dB of flat in the amplitude response up to 20khz AND nearly perfect in phase response (with maximum phase shift of under 20 degrees at 20khz). It minimizes pre and post ringing as well and is a feature of the 4493 chip as implemented by RME. There’s also a true NOS filter for those that want that.
Amir at ASR told me this was his favorite out of the 30+ DACs he owns and I see why. More features than I need but RME really nailed it on the the output stages and made it sound more analog than digital. Maybe best AKM DAC yet, you might say it's 'on fire'
Great video! Very helpful, thanks.
I just bought the RME ADI-2 PRO FS R. I need an A - D conversion too, and I don't need an IEM output. It has a remote control. It's brilliant. I think the manual is difficult to understand though, compared to , say, a Behringer manual.
Would you recommend this for someone like me who wants to use headphones like HD 800s and HD 600 and other 1000 usd - 2000 usd mark headphones at desktop.
Or should I get a schiit or jds lab amp dac stack?
I'm tempted by this RME ADI-2 unit... but I already have the Monoprice Monolith 788 Dac/Amp combo which does EQ and it only cost me $400 on Black Friday.
Would love to see a comparison to the Burson Conductor 3 and IFI Pro iDSD
Very good review.Yes the RME is on my short list along with the pro version. The one thing it does not have is analogue inputs which may make the Benchmark DAC 3 worth it.The other one for consideration and I wish you review (because I think you will do a thorough job) is the Mini DSP SHD.The full version of that piece has 1)analogue inputs 2)DAC 3)Volumio Streamer (think it is also Roon ready) 4)Pre function with full 2 in 4 out x-over 5)Dirac Room correction,I think if I was going to do a a DIY speaker like baffle-less designs I have been interested it would be a no brainer but right now with my German Horns (Odeons great x-over) and tube Integrated I might want to use it in tape loop. But next to The Mini DSP ($1200 same price as the RME both have great flexibility and good price.
Thank you

@@kaankucuk1612 I would assume that Hugo would sound a bit better. If you like adjusting sound the RME has many filters,EQ,etc. The amps I am interested are for speakers the headphone amps on both mentioned DACs I am sure are great.Best value is probably Topping D90 ( they make one witjout MQA for $100 less than regular model) - one that intrigues me most is new Gustard R26 Discrete for twice the Toppinga price at$1500.Great reviews
I had it when it first came out, but sold it a few months ago. I compared it with Parasound P6, two different chips. It was much cleaner and more detail than the P6. The reason I sold it was the stereo image separation was not that good. The two channels were more summing together as someone else also mentioned in other forums. I also compared it with the DA2 in my McIntosh C53. The DA2 and P6 were better regarding stereo image separation. Other than that, the RME is a great DAC.
Were you listening through headphones when you compared stereo image separation to other DACs? The ADI-2 has 5 crossfeed settings, and even setting "1" (the least) has some crossfeed.
@@andrewfurst5711 No, I did not use it with headphones. I guess with headphones you may not notice it that much. At first, I used it with a pair of powered monitor speakers on my desk. The monitor speakers were near field and sitting close to each other on the desk, so I did not notice it until I brought it to bigger room and had chance to try it with my other stereo equipment.
@HTH, Very interesting what you said. In my case it is the other way around. My RME ADI2 + HIFIMAn Edition XS produce so wide sound stage and stereo image separation that I use crossfeed 1 or 2 to push all the image to the front and center. Otherwise John Coltrane was blowing his sax directly to my right ear and Keith Jared played his piano behind my left ear. :)
How do you think it would be for headphones as to surround sound and Dolly Atmos?
How does this compare to the Ares and Pontus Denafrips DACS? Thanks.
Excellent Review!!!
I use the ADI-2 in my headphone rig. I still prefer the Gumby in my main two
channel system.
Thanks for the review! I know this is an older video and I believe you’re now using Kef r11s? but something you mentioned has me intrigued. If you’re using the RME EQ to high pass your r100s where are you hooking up your subwoofer to receive a ‘non ‘ high passed signal? Thanks
I have this unit and I love it to death (I don't even look at the THX AAA 789 anymore because of it). However, I gotta point out something that made me chuckle in this video.
"To top it all off, it's made by engineers." Yes.....like 99% of DACs and AMPs.
But I know what you were trying to say. Lol. It just made me laugh. I'm glad you're putting a spotlight on this device. It's honestly a game changer.
Now, my DAC was made not by engineers but by belly dancers, who know great sound when they hear it.
I think he was trying to say that it was designed to be used in a professional production environment. You’re right about his word choice though.
The people who made this should be called over engineers
hey stefan... are u using IEMs or the 1/4inch out?? BTW are u using the balanced out?? I am planning to get 789 to go along with this..!! have u heard it balanced or didnt u notice any difference between balanced and unbalanced..??? Thankss...
@@v_tourer5713 it depends on the IEM and how sensitive it is. But for most of my IEMs I use the IEM out for sure as it definitely has the lowest noise floor for sensitive IEMs. I have tried balanced line out to the 789, and I do not hear a difference between the ADI-2 and the 789 (which is why I basically stopped used the 789). However, the 789 has simply more power when used in Balanced out (this doesn't need balanced in to take advantage of this). So if you have particularly inefficient headphones or voltage hungry planars for example, the 789 can take you farther. I've done this a couple times with my HE-1000se, but not often enough to justify it. My personal opinion is that unless you like to annihilate your ears with volume (and I don't generally listen quietly) or have extremely inefficient headphones, it's not worth getting both the ADI-2 and the 789. I'd get the ADI-2 and be extremely satisfied with that alone. Which, I am and can wholeheartedly recommend.
Its funny how audiophiles are “discovering” RME now. I used their pro audio converters in my studio years ago and loved them but switched to Apogee.
So you think Apogee sounds better?
@@carltoncotter2614 Apogee integrated easier into my Mac setup with core audio and I never needed to leave Logic (for a recording studio environment). RME had a complicated sub mixer that I didn’t want to be bothered with. RME was more lean and precise sounding, Apogee fuller tone. Not really sure one “sounds better” I think it’s just preference. Also after you record an album or song it won’t even be noticeable between the two anyways. As far as just a listening DAC for playback on a hifi stereo, the RME ADI-2 FS DAC is awesome (and meant for that) especially with all the features. And yes just for DAC playback I like the RME sound signature.
Thanks for the great review. Would love to see a comparison of this against the Wyred 4 Sound Intimo. It's an ESS implementation with a 3 band EQ and class A amp.
I'm looking to upgrade my Head Phone amp to something with a remote. currently the ADI-2 is at the top of my list but I'm also thinking about the Topping D90 + A90 or maybe the Quad Vena II Play. A lot to think about! 👍
Really great review, exactly what I was looking for, thanks! One question I have is about the high-pass you mentioned. Do you accomplish this because you can set different EQ/filters for the balanced and unbalanced pre-outs on the back, so you have the high-pass on the XLR balanced outs going to monitors, and low-pass or no filter on the RCA unbalanced outs going to your sub? I am planning a separates system but would love to just buy this DAC instead!!
Exactly what i was wondering about! Did you manage to figure it out?
@@darpanbhuyan1909 not true high-pass. he was shelving bass down out of the DAC into the speakers, and then shelving it back up in his sub.
Is it worth to upgrade the internal DAC from my M5si with the RME, or better Ares2?
Great info T - I have one too along with the Denfrips Ares II - tweaker's dream.
Hi there, I'm interested on both DACs (and maybe on the Topping D90), besides the different feature sets, or lack of for that matter on the Ares II, how does the sound quality compare? Thank you!
@Marten Dekker lol yes :)
Hi Garfy, just wondering over time what is better sounding ? Ares II on RME?
hi, had mine for a month still learning, i use a 12v battery and its night and day everything is better soundstage musicality depth etc

I love my RME, probably the best purchase I made for my Hifi system. Can you guys please expand on using a battery with it....?
@@JuanLega RME selling the kable for battery use. It runs at 12Volt DC. I have 2 12AH lead batterys and it last about 20 hours. The background start to go realy black ,and overall smoothnes rise. Its not a absolute game changer but i will not go back.
@@markusbullmann1900 just curious but wouldnt a good linear power supply do the same thing?
Using the EQ as a high pass filter to integrate the subwoofer? Very smart! Why didn't I think of that LOL!?! But then how do you get the signal to feed the subwoofer?
Thats my question to.
A highpass filter only cuts down the bass volume down 6db or 12db, the bass information will still be there and you adjust the subwoofer volume accordingly!
-Thujan
@@nbtstudio6612 Thujan, sorry but how can you do highpass filter? I checked the menu and could not find it..Very interested if I can cut lower information going to main speakers.
@@nbtstudio6612 But that information should not be linear anymore right? I would need to use some kind of roll-off. Separate Subwoofer outs or a high pass filter on the Sub, would make more sense, but than you first have to go to the Sub and back to the power amp or active speakers...
Could this be a good preamp (and DAC) replacement for a streaming-based two-channel system?
A comparison the the Denafrips Ares 2 and the Burson
Ares 2 is R2R so you can't compare them. You want R2R or don't. Just like you don't compare tubes with anything else.

Yes but they are geeeeeermans so it must be better 🙈
Would love to know how this compares to the Denafrips and Topping
Aeres II sounds better to my ears. Regret selling my AERES II for the RME
Can this power my hd650 or hifiman ananda?
I wonder how this would work for a luddite who would not read the manual and does not want to fiddle. I do need a dac but will it force me to spend time playing with it instead of playing music.

Can this be done ?
yes, that's how everyone uses it with active speakers or a power amp to speakers and also active subs at the same time.
this DAC allows you to set the output levels on both RCA and XLR then control both with master volume knob and the remote main volume. you can also set the input gain on each digital input. It's the most adjustable DAC I've seen yet
Mine, I never had to tinker with the settings. Just activated the Loudness button and I was done .

It’s a chord Qutest killer I thought, when I checked it out.
I had a Qutest. I didn’t like it and sold it.
what's the difference between the V2 vs. Pro?
I just sold my ADI-2 dac. It's a great DAC, but the amp is lacking and you would need to buy an external one to get the most out of it. I replaced it with a Hugo 2, which for me is indeed the complete package and has replaced all of my desktop gear.

Minor Errata - I'd probably not make that even in my sleep! 😅 While indicating the outputs you switched the RCA and XLR as you indicated them with your fingers!
Yeah, I noticed it too, Oh well. I think, in his attention to try to keep looking at the camera and keep the unit balanced on his other hand, his pointing was less than accurate. And he didn’t have to say it had a DAC, headphone amp, and DSP functions three times.
Yep, I pointed at the wrong outputs. Glad you know the difference 😉

Great Video!
As a DAC, how is this ADI-2 perform compared to Denafrips Ares II?
@@_kardus It's unfortunate, I had the possibility to buy this DAC, but after seeing the recommendation of Jay for Denafrips Ares II, I ended-up buying it. Now I regret it. I am still waiting for it to arrive
Ouafi Squalli Be wary of falling into the “I’m missing out” trap just because some reviewer raves about a unit. Jay was very adamant that the Denafrips was a great DAC, but there’s always going to be The Next Best Thing. I ordered the Denafrips as well but while waiting I checked out the reviews on the Topping D90, so I got that one instead and cancelled the Denafrips. Was that a good move? I’ll probably never know. You don’t really know if a unit works for you until you get your hands on it.

Interesting but what's about the preamp section ? No information about it.
I have a very basic question that I am not finding an answer to. How do we connect headphone amps in a computer based home studio. Do we connect directly to the computer - via USB OR via the computer’s headphone out. Or do we connect to the headphone out of the audio interface. A dac + interface with a quality headphone out solves everything. But I’m just curious about how I’d go about it if I had a stand alone headphone map. Thanks.
For your final, analogue signal, you will always connect your headphones directly to anything other than the computer. DAC and / or headphone amp into the computer and headphones into that device.
@@carltoncotter2614 K thanks.
love your videos, im a new subscriber. Keep up the good job. Quick question, I just ordered my rme adi2 dac after watching your review. It has a built in preamp, but I want to just use this as a straight dac, I already have a preamp. Can you toggle this feature off? or when I pulg it into my preamp will it disable the preamp feature in the dac? How does this work...… thank you
Hello, which one is better Hugo 2 or RME ADI 2 DAC? Thank you
Is there a one-click button for switching between preamp (speaker) and headphone output? or is preamp always active?
Hold the volume knob in for 2-3 seconds and you effectively switch between the preout and the headphone out.
-Thujan
You have the option of disabling the Preamp when using the headphone output, and also having them both work at the same time as well.
- Thujan
Hello Nepherim. The remote control has 4 buttons which you can assign many different functions including the one you asked for. So yes one click switch and you re done. No need to touch the device at all.
How does this compare to a Lumin D2 ?
I bought the Buchardt S400 and have kept it. What's a good subwoofer to pair with the s400's? I was thinking of SVS sb-3000, but then I heard REL (T9i) is better for music.
Bryan C I use the T7i and I think it’s more than enough for me in an average sized room.If you have any questions let me know. I had toughts of running dual T7i but it’s too much for me.They are great performers...give them a try if you have the chance.
Will this sounds better than the dac inside the Hegel H95 if I use RCAs cables from this dac to the Hegel ??
My guess it would. But I don't know much about the Hegel DAC implementation. You could try and you have quite a bit of control and flexibility with the RME which btw just saw another firmware upgrade end of last month. It may more depend on the rest of your system.
But why isn't it balanced output to headphones?
I’ve question - new to the audiophile world and started collecting different gear- my current Headphones are
HEDDPhone, Audeze LCD-X, Focal Clear, Hifiman Arya.
Currently I use iFi iDSD Micro Black Label to drive it.
Do you think that RME ADI-2 DAC FS could be upgrade to what I currently have and do I need separate AMP to drive my headphones ?
Yes it would be more of an upgrade on the DAC department, but your planar will appreciate the extra power aswell!
Can I use this with my 2 channel home audio system?
I want to use this to improve sound when playing music off my phone to my home system.
My system is..
Adcom 555ll amp
Adcom GTP400 pre amp
Klipsch heresy ll speakers
I bought it in 1990.
Sounds wonderful like the first day I bought it.
Can I add this dac to my system to improve the sound off my phone playing mp3 or flac files?
Depends on how you want to connect the phone. The RME has no BT Module, so you need a phone with usb out or an additional BT interface with usb or spdif out. Then it will definitely improve sound quality.
I had the Adi-2 for a week. I could do a LOT. But how does it sounds? I was intrested in the DAC mainly. Itś too neutral, a bit harsch, not a deep soundimage. Not to my taste. I sent it back.
By harsch you mean agressive sibilance on "t" and "s" vocal sounds? Could you please elaborate a bit more? Isn't it possible to EQ and tame the harshness as well as expanding the soundstage (applying more crossfeed)? Which setup did it fed?
Does it need burning in?
Graham Straw That's possible but it was more the analytic basic sound I didn't like.
The basic sound was not for me. I think the EQ-setting are more for roomcorrection than anything else. Not to change the sound of the dac.
How does it compare to the Chord Qutest?
ua-cam.com/video/0_G7ENaPg3o/v-deo.html
Not really getting how this replaces minidsp's killer functionality, i.e. room correction with a microphone functionality.
If it had analogue in'''s a la Bnechmarks DAC3 it woud be the go to no question.Still a hell of a bargain;
Hi, see the "RME ADI-2 Pro FS (Black Edition)" for the AD/DA version.
I know you guys are audio files but can you do videos that appeal to the normal audio listener because we can’t afford products over 500$ I would love to get your opinion on the best sounding bluetooth headphones under that price.
If you're able to wait a while before making a purchase, I would keep an eye out for the DROP THX Panda headphones. Alot of promising tech for 399$ I believe.
- Thujan
By chance had you compared it or listen to Chord Qutest? I'm debating rme adi2 vs chord qutest for my yamaha as3000 with dali epicon 6 speakers.
I read on a forum somewhere that a reviewer could not really tell the difference between a Chord Hugo 2 and a ADI-2, i have not heard the difference personally, but i brought a ADI-2 and super happy with it, and it has the filter and eq options if need be. i upgraded from a old Arcam ir-dac, i can't see me wanting to day upgrade any more, end game for me.
The Chord Quetest is a brighter DAC, with more detail.
-Thujan
@@nbtstudio6612 thank you. Is it a huge amount of detail which could be justified by price difference? I looking to upgrade my old fiio d03k... its retirement is long overdue.
@@SzymonMelewski If you're looking for strictly DAC usage I would get the Chord Qutest. It would be a tad fatiguing for longer listening sessions depending on your system synergy. I would recommend the RME for someone who wants a neutral sound and wants to take advantage of all of it's features. Either way great options but it all depends on your preference.
-Thujan
The v2 of the ADI-2 with the AKM 4493 chip betters the Qutest and is more accurately compared to the Hugo TT2, which I have also done. It outclasses the Qutest and trades blows with the TT2. This statement does not apply to the version in the video, which is the v1 with the AKM 4490, and it lacks the SDLD filter.
If I do my final mixes on this DAC will they have that sound quality on each other source i play that mix?

Beat Topping D90?
Yes, I compared D90 with ADI-2 DAC and the ADI-2 DAC sounds better. The clarity and instrument separation in RME is precise with a little more microdetails . The D90 beats the ADI-2 in soundstage (on few tracks and with RME's auto ref "on"), but sounds more muffled. With RME providing a headphone amp and a 5 band equalizer, the D90 just cannot win against it in terms of price/performance ratio.
it was great until 6:22 "changing cable".

I think your previous job was waiter....
He repeatedly says how affordable this DAC is but never comes clean that it costs around $1100. A top DAC would allow to change filters, I couldn’t find any information that this so-called feature packed DAC would offer different filters. Sorry for being a shill buster. This is only an opinion, not a review.
What do you recommend that can do all this for $1100. plus a DAC that would allow to change filters,
The RME ADI 2 does have changeable filters, a quick google search provides you the answers you need.

is this what you are looking for DA filters at time 4:04 ua-cam.com/video/enZD40j-kjI/v-deo.html
What? The RME is basically known for its DSP functions, including filters. $1100 is very reasonable for what it offers (which is basically mid-fi), unless you're a student or some such.
