    What I love best about this series, is that it is so faithful to the source material - the novels by P. D. James. Modern adaptations of novels try to fit everything into an hour and a half, and they cut out everything they deem to be insignificant to the main push of the story. But this series takes six hours to tell the story of a single book, and every detail is considered important. It's as though the screenwriters knew that, if it was important enough to be included in the original story, then it was important enough to include in the adaptation. It shows so much respect for the source material, and a willingness to take things slow in order to tell a story well.

      You will hate the new series with the otherwise appealing Bertie Carvel. It has three adaptations (not this one) and they are a travesty of the original adaptations, let alone the books. And there is speculation about a second series...which would almost certainly include this, and Devices and Desires (two of the best books).

      Yes, I noticed that taking of time when I came across these a couple yrs ago, after having seen them when they first came out. I then realized that all mystery adaptations these days, as you say, are 1 1/2 hrs long, 3 hrs at a push. All they do is show what happened, and then almost immediately explain the solution. These 6-episode ones allow for a lot of time for the audience to take in all the details, guess, and then revise their guesses a few times. Time is esp needed for the complexity of PD James. I love these adaptations! Thank you for uploading.

      I've been reading P. D. James' "A Taste for Death" and weeks later watching this series' production of the same novel. What a surprise and thrill to hear exact quotes from the novel in the video version. I have great respect for Ms. James' writing, her use of words is delightful and brilliant. Thus, this series of the movie versions of her writings delights me with the honor I see in their respect of her words. There is fine literature in video, but it is so very rare.

    - Excellent series and unforgettable Mr. Marsden as "Dalgliesh" - other actors of this role pale in comparison, even special in themselves like Mr. Shaw as "Gently". Unique psychological "touch", Mr. Marsden had - straight, but mysterious. Somehow "absent" occasionally, but still present. On par with other - though all different from each others - three top seeds (imho): Mr. Brett as "Sherlock Holmes" and Mr. Suchet as "Hercule Poirot". - I say this despite of other great English Detective-Series in TV like: "Foyle", both "Morse's" - then there's an interval - after which comes series like "Inspector Lewis", "Midsomer Murders", with Mr. Nettles and perhaps few others. But only few. -

    The charade staged by Deborah and Felix was beyond over-the-top🤦🏼‍♀️
    Good for Catherine to not be hanging around anymore for crumbs from Stephen. Sadly true that often a supposed love interest is merely about being obsessed with obtaining a glorified object who is seemingly beyond reach; desiring to pick the forbidden/unreachable fruit (so to say), and to then lose interest, after the object had been secured. Soon to follow are disillusionment - accompanied by devaluation - preceding the eventual discard.

    The fight between Stephen and Derek never surfaced in the evidence; and was Sally drugged or not, awake or unconscious, when she was strangled by an elderly woman? Difficult to reconcile Stephen's immaturity, arrogance, rage and emotional vacillation with his position as a registrar in a London hospital! And why did the camera in the first episode cut between Stephen and Sally at the station if he wasn't actually following her? Rather unsatisfactory. And as for the police procedure: no lawyers or recording of interviews and DNA not yet current. Better use could be made of Felix' 'cover her face' quote.

  • @MissJessyeNorman
    @MissJessyeNorman 9 років тому +9

    MANSLAUGHTER?!?!!? For a 2nd degree murder? I know she was generally a kind lady, but she chose evil in that moment. The girl may have been trouble, but she wasn't evil. She had many good qualities, and she had been treated horribly by them. That's no excuse for her to have taken revenge. But she was obviously doing it out of low self-esteem and feelings of anger at class iniquity. If they'd had patience, it all could've been cleared up, even if she had been serious. She had BIG problems. BUT, they would've been able to handle her far better, and those problems, if it weren't for their own moral failings, which were just as large, and in many cases larger than her own. This seems a clear case of the defendant's class allowing her to get unfair advantage. AND, the housekeeper should've been charged for having been drugging her. And fine, the cop acts like a callous know-it-all, who takes over their home with extreme arrogance--but he still has the gall to make a social call after having thrown a bomb into their family. Yes, they committed the crimes--but you'd expect him to show respect for the family by not trying to ingratiate himself with them.

    • @qhsperson
      @qhsperson 8 років тому +4

      I'm afraid you have no idea what an act of passion is like--I do, and it's no fun at all. It's not a rational act, suddenly wanting (and maybe trying) to kill someone.
      I used to work with a young woman who was a bit like Sally Jupp, and first her husband found himself about to kill her, then (post-divorce) one of her boyfriends was in the act of choking her to death when he was interrupted, and even I found myself having a gut reaction to her one night on the job that scared me to death because I realized she was taunting me to the point of attacking her.
      I figured she'd end up dumped in a ditch somewhere eventually, but I have no idea if she's still alive. Her ex-husband was a minister, by the way, with his own church. And yes, she had problems, but who doesn't? That doesn't entitle you to make as many other people as miserable as you possibly can.

    • @JJ21210
      @JJ21210 6 років тому +5

      Sally was a manipulative liar who used people -- did you not pay attention? She wasn't treated horribly by the family until *after* she'd begun her campaign of bad behavior -- only the housekeeper was hostile to her from the start. And while I agree that the class divides in the UK are particularly potent and hateful, I don't see any evidence in this production of class inequality as a motivator for Sally.

    • @ekcentrik

      That whole issue about holding onto the house is about class. The daughter looked down on the less fortunate. She said the old "let them eat cake" line" about the politics of "envy". Given the state of the U.S. today, I had immediate contempt for her.

    An excellent series: but how did old MR's Maxie get out of the room having killed Sally Jupp? It was on the first floor & the in the morning the other characters couldn't get in as the door was bolted from the inside. Presumably this 70 year old woman climbed down the drainpipe like Jupp's uncle.

    • @JJ21210
      @JJ21210 6 років тому +3

      Police read someone his/her rights before any official questioning of that person. In this case, the woman blurted out her confession in less formal situation; she wasn't in police custody and therefore the police weren't required to read her her rights. (A confession under those circumstances might be inadmissible in court -- I don't know -- but that's immaterial in this case, because she was prepared to take responsibility for her actions.)

    Ridiculous plot twists and so many red herrings that it smells like a fish sauce factory. What rubbish writing, though the production and acting is quite good for a tv series, as it keeps the viewer hooked to the end in spite of the ridiculousness of it all. Waste of 6 hours of my time. Should be a chargeable offense!

      You clearly do not appreciate the layering and slow unfolding of a complex set of circumstances. One-hour, solution at the end American cop shows may have spoiled you for it -- rather like readers of junk fiction not being able to appreciate literature, especially if it is more than 229 pages.
