The intro came about as a means of showcasing songs from their first six albums, which they were no longer performing, either because they couldn't fit them into their set list or because Geddy could no longer hit the high notes that some of them required; for example, the last two song clips before The Spirit Of Radio are from a two part epic that would take them 30 minutes to perform in full, and features one of his highest notes ever. Here they are in order:

John Rutsey was on the first album. Then he left. Geddy and Alex found through auditions Neil Peart, this drummer, who stayed for forty years. There is a bit of catching up here if ya wanna. It’s a good rabbit 🐰 hole.
The professor, knowing his personality, probably is laughing his ass off up in Heaven hearing "John". 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣

@@jbreacts, good stuff. Neil didn't have an ego and was quite introverted. He would not have taken exception with your not knowing his name and calling him "John". He would've most likely had a quick, funny, response to it. 😁😁😁
JB, Neil Peart was their drummer for 40 years plus. He's considered by many to be one of the greatest drummers of Rock and Roll of all time. I don't believe RUSH would have been the super band they were without him, as he wrote most of the lyrics of their songs.

Rush wouldn't be Rush if any of those three weren't in it. They are unique in that they have three of the most talented rock musicians ever. How many bands do you know that are that "tight" live? Cheers

The drummer is Neil and has been since mid 1974. :)
John was the drummer on the first album (1974).

Man, I bloody LOVED that! Thanks for getting round to it eventually old mate! A few things (which I could maybe have told you earlier):
The drummer is Neil Peart. The John in your head might be John Bonham from Led Zeppelin. One of the best drummers ever, but Neil is the Professor!
The video screen - yes, a montage of the band in younger days, to match the song montage from early albums. The older guy going nuts that you see occasionally is Jerry Stiller (Ben Stiller's Dad), who you might know from Seinfeld
A brilliant way to start a concert for sure, glad you enjoyed it mate.
And since you enjoyed the drumming s much, maybe you'll do another of my recommendations - Neil Peart Drum Solo- Frankfurt. It'll knock your socks off mate!

@@jbreacts Forgot to mention- Geddy decided he wanted to stop using amps and simply plug direct into the house PA. Have a look at Alex's set-up and you'll see that would create quite a gap on stage. So Rush being Rush - let's put some laundry machines and a vending machine in there!

@@Silica_Packer I can imagine. I've been a Rush fan since the 70's and I get my back up because I have felt, until recently, they have never received the respect and accolades they deserve.
I get it buddy and i apologize dont want to offend any body and will do my best to make sure things are right in the future but i like that you guys are here to tell me whats what about these band iv not really herd off. Am enjoing the journey of learning and hearing new bands and artists
you should get your facts before you start to record your videos. the drummers name is Neil and the little snippets they are playing are songs from their previous albums so it didn't become The Spirit of Radio. saying the wrong things doesn't make you look like you tried to find out info about the band or the song called doing your homework

This intro is fantastic because Rush took mediocre songs and turned them into a hardcore masterpiece in about 10 mins.
