The video that started it all. The 10 year streak will be achieved in a few months. Enjoy your very well deserved holiday Tom! So cool to see this video and not even that well watched currently (261k views)
One thing to note about horse crossings. They won't have the black and white stripes (zebra crossing) because the way the horse's vision works, it sees the contrast as holes in the ground, ie a foot bridge with a bunch of gaps. Police horses have to be specially trained to be able to navigate these without freaking out.
in several different countries i have found myself confused by pedestrian crossings with lights AND zebra stripes. i usually notice this right after i almost get hit by a car
Ten long, consistent, successful years. Simply incredible. After his last video montage, I had to come back to the video that began the Things You Might Not Know series. Even though it’ll be a little sad not having a new video every Monday to look forward to, I am very grateful for everything you have shown us along the way, Tom. Happy New Year, can’t wait to see what the future may hold!
Noooooo. I've now seen them all, I'm relegated to just new uploads! Tom, you've consumed my life at this point. I love your chanel, it's absolutely brilliant. :)
I've got the Things You Might Not Know and Amazing Places down, as well as a few other videos and many of the Park Benches on Matt & Tom. Where do I go from here? What do I watch to waste spare time?!
Ah, sometimes, at the end of a journey, is a nice big rock with some friendly chaps sitting on it, ideally with a pot already on the camping stove. Nice to see that this is one of those journeys. Just need to check that I didn't miss any. :D EDIT: And lo, I had. Large chunks of the more recent half, actually. Anyway, all done now! That's all of CN and TYMNK down! NOW TO FEAST UPON AMAZING PLACES
Thank you Tom Scott, 10 years of weekly uploads is absolutely insane. Thank you for all of your educational and interesting videos. Thank you, and be free.
Went back to number 1 to thank you again, tom. I'm still crying a bit. Best of luck in your next stage of life. I hope you know how much you mean to so many people.
anyone else back here after his last video? It's such an amazing legacy, 10 years of work! Thank you Tom, you've definitely told me many things I didn't know (and some I did).
i did not know that, if only there were 519 more videos of this style to inform me of various things that i might not know, amazing places or garlic bread in space for 2 and a half hours, now that would be awesome!
I remember stumbling on this video one night and decided to binge through all of your content up to the latest (at the time) content, which I think was the secret pedestrian button video. It was intriguing, and I eventually subscribed to your channel. And now here I am 7-8 years later, reminiscing about the good old times, how I waited most Monday or Tuesdays for my next fix of Tom Scott content, and how some of the info actually helped me throughout the years one way or another. It was a good 10 years. Thank you.
Congrats on your conviction. You made it through ten years. It honestly might be the most follow-through anyone has ever had on their new years resolution 😂
In 2014, he crossed a road. There was a lot for him and us to learn and enjoy on the other side of that road, and now, in 2024, he's about to cross another road!
I appreciate how tom would do these shorter videos that just put out the information to educate people, without worrying about how youtube had rules about monetization that often limited or prohibited short videos like these from making money. (it's why you often see some other videos with nearly no relevant content padded out to longer length to hit the youtube requirements)
Blimey Tom, that was something I did not know. If the horse ones are called Pegasus Crossings.... what are the COW ones called? (To be fair, there might only be one, on the A75 between Dumfries and Stranraer) but it's an actual bona fide set of traffic lights to allow cows to cross a seriously busy trunk road. A Euroroute no less!)
And yes, coming to the party some three years late, I realise there's little to no chance anyone will see this let alone answer it but hey, I'd have felt I had let the side down by not asking.
It has its quirks and perks :-) If you think about it, all countries have some things which people from other countries will find odd (in the nicest sense!). I guess we don't notice our own foibles and think everyone does it - wherever you have a horse-riding culture, surely you have bridleways and road crossings for them. Only apparently it's an oddity! I love finding out from Tom just what is peculiar to Britain, and the countries he visits. It's what makes this an his other channels so darned good!
The one with cameras that track people as they cross is really awesome. Here in Canada we may get a button to turn on the walking thing as it comes around so it stays on, But even than if it's a wide road (4+lanes) some traffic lights only leave it on long enough for you to end up in the middle of the street.
Just discovered your channel, Mr Scott. Loved the little sci-fi shorts. Your videos are of such a good quality, you deserve more views and subscribers than you've currently got. (BTW, I discovered you through Computerphile.)
There are horse crossings with the higher buttons in some equestrian zones in the greater Los Angeles area. The one I'm most familiar with is in the Burbank Rancho Equestrian District, near Griffith Park. I believe there are even fast food joints or banks with raised, ride-through windows, though I can't find anything to confirm that at the moment.
Norco (aka "Horsetown USA" had elevated horse crossing buttons all over. Also have places you can tie off your horse, like at McDonald's and such so you can go in and get food. And yes, you can ride through a drive through. I have yet to do any of that except go to a restaurant with my horse, but it is possible.
You might want to check out the horse crossings in Florida. Over some Interstate highways and other major roads where there is heavy traffic there are cross overs for horses that are dirt and grass. I assume other animals can use them too. One place to look is near the city of Ocala crossing I75.
What an amazing 10-year long journey! Thank you Tom Scott, for making all of these videos!
_Yup_
I've never heard someone so exited saying ''im about to cross a road'' it was wholesome
Same
Why did Tom Scott cross the road?
To start the greatest youtube series the internet has ever seen.

It's not. The last 10 years streak is today with a good bye video.

Police horses have to be specially trained to be able to navigate these without freaking out.
They also don't have the stripes because they are not zebra crossings
Plus, they are controlled using lights, which normally means no stripes are necessary.
Plus a horse might not like to cross cus a zebra pressed on the road ;D
@@fleecemaster OP might be US-American where the crossings (often? usually?) have zebra stripes even though they're regulated by a traffic light.

Cody Mintz-Thibault just got there myself. RIP
I've got the Things You Might Not Know and Amazing Places down, as well as a few other videos and many of the Park Benches on Matt & Tom.

Just coming back here for a little cry after watching Tom fly off into the sunset
Wish me luck, I'll be watching every single one of these, starting from this video!
I wish you luck! If you only achieve a fraction of that goal you'll have learned a lot!
Go back further?farther? and you'l discover some gems
Wow, this is where the 10-year weekly upload streak started! Congratulations Tom, you will not be forgotten. Good luck with your future endeavors!

Here after Tom Scott announced his retirement/break. Glad to see so many fresh comments here!!

I find it wild how inaccurate this statement is 💀
PUFFIN - pedestrian user friendly intelligent crossing
P.edestrian U.ser FF.riendly IN.telligent
It must be extra friendly with the extra F they snuck in and gave up with on the backronym

Goodbye tom. To make videos for a decade at such a high quality and to see where you came from is inspiring ❤
