I wanted to mention that "yomi" is actually the Japanese fighting game term for "read", like read your opponent. The game actually used to be called yomi hustle (no acronym) but got in hot water with the other non-realtime fighting game, Yomi. Really, your only move is yomi.

I noticed an option in the steam version thay says "Chess clock" and I hope this becomes standard. Give each player 5 seconds per turn, and then any extra time comes from a finite time pool (or maybe it's dependant on total game time so you're not both screwed in the endgame). This means you can think a lot in neutral, but then you should hurry up on your combos a little bit so your opponent isn't bored waiting you to find what's optimal.

It's worth mentioning that the cowboy's gun throw is more useful than just a meme option. If your opponent is close enough and you think they're going to successfully parry your bullet, throwing your gun takes long enough that they'll lose their block before they get hit. There's a few moves like that in the game, and it's always extremely satisfying correctly reading a block with them.

When out of ammo, Gun toss can also be a good last ditch combo extender, as his only consistently adjustable move. (Lightning blade only has adjustability the first time you use it in sequence.)
It always knocks in with set knockback making tp extensions easy. Was an essential part of my first lab zero to death.

Getting a hit stun on the enemy while they’re in the corner allows for a free frame where you can throw his gun upwards, and follow up with a slice; while you combo him in the corner the gun will continue to bounce giving you more damage, keeping them low in the corner and extending your combo. Positioning has to be right but I pulled this off the other day. Favorite thing about this game is being able to find small things like that.

As someone who’s always been massively intimidated by fighting games and has never felt like she could excel at them (partly from low desire to learn, but also partly from physical limitations that make it hard to remember complex patterns in fast environments- which makes y.o.m.i. sound INCREDIBLY accessible to me), I really appreciate how gracious this video is to the community of fighting-genre-shy people. No mockery, no “lol get gud,” just a rational acceptance of the learning curve that isn’t a flaw of the genre but simply a fact. Thank you, StaticTorch, for being a quality human being. ✌️

@@thegames4565 I have, though it’s been some time. I agree completely with what you’re saying- there’s no way to be competent at something without actually *trying* and learning to be competent first! I guess for me, even with trying to take the time to learn combos, I get very directionally challenged the quicker I have to process information. So I might know all my combos, but the better and more reactive my opponent, the more likely I am to fumble the controls and just devolve into useless button mashing because of mental panic lol. It’s something I’ve tried to train myself out of, especially because I love rhythm games and I experience the same problem there, but it’s not easy. Hence why y.o.m.i. seems a lot more approachable to me!

@@LoverofTragedy You need to learn fighting game mechanics. Learn about frame data and frame advantage. The game pauses the exact first frame that somebody is active and can take a turn. Burst is a little attack you can do while being combo'd, but it can be used against you if they know you will do it so experiment with it. Whiff cancels let you change your attack but not to block. Blocking immediately makes you active as soon as you block, which makes for huge parries and punishes. Hitboxes can be turned on for replays in the settings. DI stands for Directional Influence and lets you steer your movement in the air, like in smash bros.

@@chaotickreg7024 Oh I already know about fighting games, and I play a few. Not competitively. I'm talking about the layout of this game. Kerbal Space Program was another game I wanted to like but the menu felt like you were actually trying to chop each finger off with a toaster foot. I'm fairly certain I just suck ass at anything that requires critical thinking. Never have been so I'll probably never end up enjoying this game anyways honestly. Looks cool though.

I love watching fighting games but struggle with playing them. I get so overwhelmed with all the terminology, mechanics, frame data etc. that experienced fighting game players (and the tutorial) urge me to learn if I want to have fun playing. The rounds feel like a final exam I'm not prepared for. And it's especially crushing when I've spent 2 days learning a combo but I can't use it because my opponent hit me with a TOD as soon as the round started.
I hope whenever I get around to playing YOMI Hustle, it'll be different like you said.

As a person who's been playing yomi since october 2022, this game slaps and the mods for it are also insane. It's very fun. You don't need to be a god at multiplayer to have a good time playing it. Compared to other fighting games, I rank it a 9.3/10. It's out on steam for $5 USD

If anyone is on the fence, DEFINITELY try this game. It's so much fun and it has this way of making you feel like you're awesome at the game even when you definitely aren't even close (I suppose that means it's intuitive? Idk)
Edit: that was a _deep cut_ "hard reads" joke holy shit lol

In Japanese, the word “yomi” has different meanings. The main meaning is “knowing the mind of your opponent”. I think its pretty cool.

    • @syrelian
      @syrelian 8 місяців тому +1

You Know I Know You Know is the dumbest succinct way to describe that mind game, the core that defines a lot of weird minor games we as a people play, like Rock Paper Scissors

Loved this video! Definitely going to convince my friends to try this game with me!
One fighting game that is also super easy to get into and fun to play with friends is, Divekick. Easy to pick for basically anyone and there are a decent range of of characters to pick from!
That could be a game you cover if you're doing a series on fighting games! Thanks for the video, hope you upload more!

I have a bunch pf friends who LOVE fighting games but i grew up on platformers and sandbox games so i was (and am) entirely clueless and lost when it comes to fighting games. Even now with the ability to go and play fighting games i just never clicked with any of them and id constantly get smoked without even knowing why. The problems you described at the beginning of the video for new fighting game players almost perfectly describes me and the way you explained this game makes me want to try and play it with my friends who actually know how to play fighting games so i can finally see what all the hype is abt :)
    Thanks for the recommendation 👍
