I am so grateful this man was alive and was recorded playing, singing and speaking. John Hurt was one of the most important people to ever pick up an acoustic guitar.
Incredible. Great to 30:41 hear John Hurt speak at length. I just listened to Tom Hoskins’ first recording of Mississippi John when Hoskins knocked on his door in Avalon in 1963. John’s wife is there, the chickens are clucking and crowing, and Hoskins hands him a guitar. John didn’t even have one. He’s rusty, but it wasn’t long after that he got up to speed and made those incredible records we all love. This is priceless.
What a treat to find. I am from germany, so I just got to know Pete Seeger a year ago and John Hurt, because I love the blues also just some years ago. Two legends talking to each other... Internet was made for things like that!
Everyone that ive heard that Spoke to John said that he was extremely charming and humble man who had a happy disposition. You Can hear it quiet clearly in this interview. This is a pleasure. Pete Seager is nearly as entertaining. Thanks for posting. Love Johns music
I am so happy I stumbled on this. John Hurts""playing is one big influence on my self taught finger style piano playing. Along with guys like Roy Bookbinder ,Blind Blake DaveVanRonk and others.
Do you usually start with the tune or with the lyrics or with an idea of the meaning of the song? If you start with the lyrics, do you have a certain method in finding the tune? Does the tune start in your head, or do you start picking until you hear something you like? Are all of your songs inspired from your own experiences? That's what I would have asked him. They should have asked them that in 28 in New York before the crash.
There is no finer voice in American music than John Hurt.
we first heard his records when i was in college in Los Angeles in early 70's. i was spellbound.
The softest voice & most consistent thumb we will ever know.
My dad brought home the MJH "Today" album when I was in 7th grade in the late 80's. It literally changed my life and I have been a fan ever since.
Thank god we have recordings of this man speaking like this
Mississippi John Hurt was a Angel
What an incredible world we live in where we can hear these conversations.

Just great to hear this wonderful man telling us about himself. Thanks for putting the film up.
He was a rare player and person!
I’m now one of the kids all around the world sleeping with a guitar at the head of the bed.

Does anyone know where to find the Dock Boggs biography book that Pete Seeger mentioned in the beginning. I tried googling and had no luck.
Sing Out magazine
Who has the rights to this audio? I made a weird Steve Reich sample song out of parts of this interview..
I think that is Dylan sitting behind Seger
That is Toshi Seeger
Ouch lol
