Honestly, I would overclock the 1660TI rather than getting the 2060 because the non-RTX performance is close enough between the two as well as the fact that a laptop version of the same GPU usually runs 15-30% slower than it's desktop counterpart. As for gaming ultrabooks with a 2070 MAX-Q (like the MAG-15), I would overclock the CPU to reduce bottleneck and set the fans ramp up higher at peak.
@@handlemonium overclocking a laptop gpu is a REALLY bad idea. Undervolting and overclocking would be a bit better but still not recommended. Overclocking the cpu WILL DESTROY your laptop. Cpu cooling isnt as good as gpu cooling yet on laptops. Normal temps are pretty high for laptops, and undervolting drops the temps by a good 10-20c, so you could imagine the temps with overclocking.

Linus Tech Tips did a video a while back in which they compared a rather bulky gaming laptop, a more average sized gaming laptop with reduced specs, and a thin and light laptop using an eGPU. The findings were that despite the laptop using an eGPU having the best graphics card on paper, even the "average" gaming laptop running significantly weaker hardware was able to outperform it. A mobile variant of the GTX 1070 versus a full fat desktop 1080 shows just how much more work we need to do to engineer a real viable eGPU solution.
@@V3LOXy totally worth it. the i7-9th gen and rtx 2060 with 144hz refresh rate is the killer combo to literally chew down any game or rendering you'd dream of
Perfectly executed! Back when the Helios 300 1660ti was the “go-to” laptop it was a common misconception that the 1660ti was faster than the 2060. It was all too common for the older 2060 benchmarks and performance to be compared to the newer 1660ti. So many varieties this time! My Eluktroboosted 115w 1660 ti trades blows with the 2070mq.
Yeah I've already had a few comments here asking why the Helios 300 results are better than both of these haha, because of better CPU undervolt/GPU OC/power limits etc. Too many variations does make comparisons like this harder, but it's going to make head to head comparisons between specific machines more interesting I think.
Thanks Jarrod. My budget is a TUF with a 1660 Ti or a ROG with an RTX 2060. Both around the same price. Only difference is the TUF has a better CPU. That's the trade off. I think I'll go for the TUF.
It's nice having the m15 1660ti and seeing it literally be on par or better in all tests to the 2060. No dlss or rtx but hard to really argue the performance difference
Hello my fellow Aussie. I recently bought the ADUS TUF FX505DV with a 144hz display and the ryzen 7 along with the 2060 rtx and bang for buck this is an incredible machine... I love it
Nice video. Over 14% better is pretty good. It seems like recently the RTX laptops have been more competitively priced while the cost of GTX 1660 ti laptops has sort of stayed stuck in place. Given the right variables an RTX option seems to make a lot of good sense in mid 2020.
I ended up with the 2060, because Lenovo's store had such a steep discount on the latest Y740, 15 inch. Its currently hundreds less than the same spec competitors. By spec, I mean 9750H, 16gb ram and rtx 2060, 144hz 15.6 and a tb ssd. The only other laptop that was I found within a couple $ in near spec was the Dell G7
You r the only available source to provide insightful evaluation about pc graphics and laptop. All those traditional websites r all unable to do fair reviews....
I've been running a 1660ti and for the most part am very happy. I'm only chasing 1080p resolutions and RTX turned off and I'm getting good frame rates most of the time.
I will be there when you become huge, and don't forget us, I have watched pretty much every one of your videos, bought the helios 300 1660ti version and it's insane, Just wanted to say thank you and keep going brotha
So glad there's no-nonsense, unbiased, technical comparisons like these. Such a small difference in fps that I will probably barely notice, glad I got a 1660 Ti. I'm gonna be using this more for work anyway, programming, 3d modeling and stuff, so I'm not gonna benefit from the hardware raytracing. I just allocated that money towards getting a beefier NVMe SSD instead!
Watched this after just ordering my Legion 5 and paid more for the 2060 over the 1660Ti. Glad I did now, I originally thought the difference would be less. Thanks.
The real power of the 2060 over the 1660 ti is the DLSS. In upcoming games the feature this the 2060 will have playable frames and good visual quality while the 1660 ti might very well be unplayable.
The RTX has tensor cores, meaning it's compatible with DLSS, and other NVIDIA advanced tech. The 2060 will last much longer than the 1660ti. Trust me, get the 2060. You'll regret the 1660ti in a few months. Just look up DLSS 2.0. If you get the 1660ti, you're going to always be jealous of the AI the 2000 series has access to. I'm telling you, the 2060 has much MUCH more going for it than the 14% raw power advantage. Look up DLSS 2.0 Look up NVIDIA Broadcast Look up Tensor Cores Look up RTX Voice The 2060 has free access to all that tech. The 1660ti does not, due to its hardware inferiority. Those advantages are worth way more than the $100 extra you're going to pay. Future proof yourself and get the 2060, PLEASE.

@@JarrodsTech Why is your final word that we are getting the increase you are paying for? To me it sounds like an OC 1660 would draw the same power (10W tdp, 20W real power comsumption), emit the same heat, eat the same battery and almost have the very same FPS in most games and applications. With no additional cost. 1660ti is also rated for 80-90tdp by nVidia ;-) Would be worth a test. Without the core speeds etc. it would even look like an identical GPU to me, just with deactivated RTX features.

Just bought the Predator with the 2060, $100 CDN more. Beautiful machine, thank you for review on it in earlier comparisons, don't regret my choice one bit, top of the class laptop in the price range:)
The PC temperature was not recorded to see how those 10ºC extra of the 2060 affect the assembly temperature, which may force to use external cooling means on this option.
Super helpful video, Thank you! I have been stressing about which laptop to get from my work this year when we get our extra holiday discount next month. Definitely going to go with the 2060 now since the difference in price is less than $200, with more ram and hd space on the one with the 2060, 144hz monitor too.
I have had the 2019 Helios 300 since last June and it has ran everything I've thrown at it smoothly. I tweak the settings a bit and run my games on higher settings but not maxed with high FPS. I also dock it into a monitor, keyboard and mouse when I'm home and I forget I'm using a laptop. I highly recommend the Acer Helios 300.
I got an acer predator rtx 2060, and I can say it works like charm as someone who used to play with an gtx 960m this feels like a big jump from performance to graphics wise, now most of the game that I played there I can play at 60 or 144 fps with fancy graphics, it cost me like 1200$ but damn worth it, laptops with rtx2070 and above are expensive, so this is a good choice, I will one day build a deskpot tho, but right now I'm happy with it!
I've done an updated 1660 Ti vs 2060 test with AMD's new Ryzen 4000 processors, the results weren't quite as big as what we saw in this video: ua-cam.com/video/CnX6RE7uKpo/v-deo.html
I got a 1660 SUPER 6gb and i played Battlefied V on ultra settings on a 1080p monitor with a minimum of 62fps, i don't know how do you get such a lower fps rate with such a powerful hardware... probably your hardware is power limited in order to not melt the laptop lol
user ct user ct You seem to be talking about desktop hardware. Not really sure why you are asking that question. Of course the desktop GPU (including it being from the “super” series and the Laptop ones from the video are not) that has a much higher TDP and better thermals would perform better. Seems like you skipped the specs part of the video and went straight to benchmarks.
@@userct you're talking about a desktop card in comparison to a laptop version of the card which is inherently watered down, its an easy mistake to make since they no longer add an "m" suffix to differentiate a 1660 and a 1660m
Awesome video comparison of 2 main stream GPUs - which are so close. The dilemma faced by gamers. Thanks a lot for sharing such videos and many more to come🙂👍. Your channel deserves many more subs
I picked 1660Ti over 2060 as I wont be using my laptop purely for gaming. there are only few games at the moment that could benefit with RTX settings and turning it on will slightly drop your fps due to heat added in the GPU.
Hiya, I know it's been a while since this video went up, but as someone who's currently laptop shopping for a relative, this was immensely useful information in helping me determine which option aligned better with their use case. This is easily one of the best benchmarking comparisons I have ever seen on the internet. Thank you so much for your help!
@@JarrodsTech Can you also add 0,1% low figures? That way you can see the more mayor frame drops (1% low) and the one time frame drop (for examlple when you load a game and your framerate drops to 5 fps for a second so the 0,1% low is 5fps). Or do you think it is unnesecary to add it?
Had my rtx 2060 for over a year now and it's been an absolute beast, haven't had problems with a single game at ultra 1080p [even on bannerlord 2 with a 200v200 I stayed well above 50-60 fps] VR also runs great as well.
I got the RTX 2060 for a lower price. I thought I had missed out on some frames by getting the cheaper option, but it turns out I got more frames for less.
Not really. It's not like there's much benefit to a 300Hz (over a 240Hz) display. 240Hz is basically the sweet spot, and 144Hz still works just fine for those who game on the side.
Yeah given 240Hz is still very niche 300Hz is honestly just a meme, unless you seriously only play like CS:GO etc, but even then how much practical difference does that make to someone playing unless they're ultra pro?
It's really my first time seeing what 144hz would look liked and I must over imagining it what will it be for the higher refresh rate will be like. I just crave for more smoother frames as possible.
I love gaming laptops i know they aren’t cheap and all but i like the idea of a portable gaming rig i love how i can just easily move my laptop anywhere
Brother, thanks to this vid and your i7 9750 comparison vid, I picked the 1660Ti with i7 9750 combo for best battery life to performance ratio. And I am so pleased with my decision. Thanks a million again!
The gtx 1660 ti ones sold so fast and out of stock at the store so I ended up with the rtx 2060 one instead. They were gtx 1060 left but this is my new laptop in 10 years I want the best one possible for me.
I went the same route and got the 2060 over the 1660Ti. I'm so glad I did. You've got RTX for lesser titles (like Minecraft RTX and QUAKE II RTX) and you have Gsync available on external displays. Plus more grunt to boot.
Thanks a lot for this comparison video. I wish you would make a compilation of the performance differential between 1650, 1660Ti, RTX 2060, RTX 2070 and RTX 2080 to get an idea what is the performance increase.
I've compared 1650 and 1660 Ti in another video. I haven't been able to fairly compare the 2070 or 2080 yet due to not having the right machines to do it with.
Hey, I’d like to buy the Lenovo Legion y540 i7 (the exact same you have reviewed on this channel) but I’m wondering if it’s worth paying extra to have the RTX2060 instead of the GTX1660ti??
Jonathan Huynh hey man, it’s definitely worth it because it’s only 100$ more. I’ll go for it. However now I’m also considering the omen 17t with rtx 2070 haha
2060 man, best bang for buck. It beats a 2070 max Q and destroys the 1660 for a small price difference. the power draw is only 10w more, 2060 will have ray tracing and basically last you years until something new comes out.

So I’m going to be new to PC gaming and watching your video to see what the difference is on graphics cards. I ended up going with the 1660ti seeing how there’s not to much of a difference. I hope my first PC experience turns out amazing, thank you for such a informative video.

Right now July 2020, the acer helios 300 with the 2060 is 1200.00 while the 1660ti is 1150.00 sometimes as low as 1100.00, definitely worth the small extra for it, but this is not true with many gaming laptops, the price jump makes no sense, usually like 1200.00 to 1500.00 range
Here's the thing. I have a MSI GS65 with a 1660ti and I much prefer this for a laptop GPU over the 2060 variant which at the time was $200 more expensive. Couple of logical reasons bare with me: First, The 1660ti runs cooler. Yes it's not as well in performance however for a laptop where heat management is a core issue if you're a gamer. It makes the most sense to have a good thermal result with good gpu performance. I was able to overclock my GPU with afterburner to run core 2050MHZ and 6285mhz memory and I have excellent performance while still have better thermals compared to a 2060. Second, Even if say a laptop was $50 more for a 2060. To me theres not a point because at 144hz a 2060 card can't run RTX games with RTX. So it's a selling feature that to me is pointless. You pretty much have to go for 2070+ if you're going to say "but you can run RTX on a 2060 over 1660ti". The correct detriment that should be mentioned with a 2060 vs 1660ti is you can run G sync on an external monitor only on a 2060 and not a 1660ti. So with that said, if you do plan on running a 144hz monitor at optimal frames then it makes sense. However this can be mitigated entirely by just buying a configured 1660ti laptop with a good 144hz screen. Third, the price for performance at best is worth $100 more for a 2060 but to me the 1660ti is a clear winner. The performance is still excellent and I love that my laptop runs cooler. Which indirectly affects my CPU running cooler.
Hey quick question I have same laptop do you happen to get high latency when other people play in the same house hold but it normal when your the only one ?
Msi had my 2060 over clocked out of the box and it was always 78 degrees until i started using after burner. Now its at 65-68 degrees while gaming and I love my gf 65. Once I downloaded throttle stop and after burner then I got it to have good thermals.

When can we expect a showcase of the MAG-15 update you talked about in your channel? Looking forward to that.
Ooffftt 115w 1660ti :0
Miguel Galvez That review went live several days ago. Apparently YT isn’t pushing notifications out on my channel right now.

Thanks Jarrod. My budget is a TUF with a 1660 Ti or a ROG with an RTX 2060. Both around the same price. Only difference is the TUF has a better CPU. That's the trade off. I think I'll go for the TUF.
Thank jarrod for making this video. I'm waiting this comparation (RTX 2060 and RTX1660Ti) so long, glad you've made it.
No problem at all! I've wanted to make it for a long time but it took a while to get the right machines to do it properly 😛
I love it
Love how rigorously you control for all parameters!
Thanks!
Nice video. Over 14% better is pretty good. It seems like recently the RTX laptops have been more competitively priced while the cost of GTX 1660 ti laptops has sort of stayed stuck in place. Given the right variables an RTX option seems to make a lot of good sense in mid 2020.
Cheers!
Nice! Yeah I've seem some nice 2060 sales from Lenovo 👍
Andrew im planning to get the Y740 as well, how do you find it?
@@jordan29123 look on Lenovo's eBay store or website. I bought it a week before black friday sales for just under $1200.

I've been running a 1660ti and for the most part am very happy. I'm only chasing 1080p resolutions and RTX turned off and I'm getting good frame rates most of the time.
Me too. Have a Y540 i7 9750h and Gtx 1660ti.rtx and dlss 2 at 1080p are useless.

Sounds like a more worthy investment!
Watched this after just ordering my Legion 5 and paid more for the 2060 over the 1660Ti. Glad I did now, I originally thought the difference would be less. Thanks.
I got the Legion 1660 Ti a week ago and I am kicking myself for not researching about this hahaha!! Lucky you!
The real power of the 2060 over the 1660 ti is the DLSS. In upcoming games the feature this the 2060 will have playable frames and good visual quality while the 1660 ti might very well be unplayable.
So the RTX 2060 is
- Average of 14% more FPS
- 100 dollar more expensive
- Warmer
- Uses 20% more power
- Shorter battery life
1660 TI for me
The same here.
Depends on the model i have found some Rtx 2060 Laptops cheaper than there 1660 ti counterpart
Look up DLSS 2.0
Look up NVIDIA Broadcast
Look up Tensor Cores
Look up RTX Voice
The 2060 has free access to all that tech. The 1660ti does not, due to its hardware inferiority. Those advantages are worth way more than the $100 extra you're going to pay. Future proof yourself and get the 2060, PLEASE.
@@Fermion. plus rtx 2060 has been improving for laptops some are able to beat the 1600 ti desktop models and are little behind there desktop counterpart
Yup, 1660ti here and my comp is still kickass!
"ef pee ass" that makes me love you even more.
Glad you covered this. It would have cost me 300 more bucks to get the RTX (which clearly is better). The GTX put up some good numbers though so I think the GTX will do just fine for me.

1660ti is also rated for 80-90tdp by nVidia ;-)
Would be worth a test. Without the core speeds etc. it would even look like an identical GPU to me, just with deactivated RTX features.
my dell g7 7790 gaming laptop has the rtx 2060, jarrod, do you know how i can find out if its the 80 or 90 watt version? thanks.

Same here .. bought it last year . Runs every game on high and some on ultra without any problem . Undervolting does help me .
Wow i’ll echo the other comments, great work!!! 👌
I was literally going back and forth between a 1660ti and 2060 model and i found this vid. Good shit
I got a 1660 SUPER 6gb and i played Battlefied V on ultra settings on a 1080p monitor with a minimum of 62fps, i don't know how do you get such a lower fps rate with such a powerful hardware... probably your hardware is power limited in order to not melt the laptop lol
hello you deserve 1 million subscribers.
user ct user ct You seem to be talking about desktop hardware.

I picked 1660Ti over 2060 as I wont be using my laptop purely for gaming. there are only few games at the moment that could benefit with RTX settings and turning it on will slightly drop your fps due to heat added in the GPU.

What does "1% Low" mean?
It's a way of showing the dips in performance, this video explains it well: ua-cam.com/video/l6WgbfG_z-k/v-deo.html

Nice!
I feel my laptop's gettin old after hearing the news about the zephyrus s having a 300 hz panel.
Not really. It's not like there's much benefit to a 300Hz (over a 240Hz) display. 240Hz is basically the sweet spot, and 144Hz still works just fine for those who game on the side.
@@infiniteaj8688 I feel like 144Hz is actually the sweetspot, 240Hz is kinda overkill and only matters to the competitive eSports players

Couple of logical reasons bare with me:
First, The 1660ti runs cooler.
Fair enough!
Hey quick question I have same laptop do you happen to get high latency when other people play in the same house hold but it normal when your the only one ?
