Nickelback is far more talented than people give them credit for. I think the hate they got was because some of their songs were really radio friendly and polished sounding and they came off as commercialized but that was in their early days. If anyone knows how the music industry goes you have guys in suits and record company execs telling you what music to make and that's likely what happened to them. Once a band gets enough fame they can be much more autonomous in their music.
While I disagree with the Nickelback part of this statement ... I do agree with you. Look at what Metallica has done with their back catalogue, starting their own record label etc. Once the fame is there ... more doors begin to open for you

What a lot of people don't realise is that in terms of musical ability, the band is actually a lot more skilled than their releases indicate. They were inspired by a lot of metal bands like Metallica, Pantera and Slayer, but ended up playing what gave them commercial success which is where a lot of the hate came from.

It's a cover of a Charlie Daniels song. You literally cannot avoid sharing riffs and lyrics without going from it being a cover to a totally different thing. You tend to see this with EVERY cover of a song, because there is very limited creative direction that can be done with a cover of a song into a different genre while still remaining respectful to the original. There's only so many ways to translate things, and that's not even getting into multiple artists covering into the same genre, where you see further narrowing.
Which is why Johnny Cash's cover of 'Hurt' is goddamn insane in how good it is. One line changed to remove a profanity, and then a change of instrumentation to fit the singer's genre, and the singer's voice gave it a new life with no further help. The original feels 'current pain', the cover is pure melancholy and regret for past pain.

Just because they are a name they have a huge bandwagon and likewise with nickelback, most of mainstream artists follow a basic garden variety chord progression and have nothing special to offer besides catchy melodies. All due to your run of the mill yet effective repetitive chord progressions. Music is also pretty subjective so you can have as much dislike or a strong opinion about them and there is nothing, absolutely nothing wrong with that. But, what is missed there is that not everyone enjoys what you like and you don't necessarily like what the person sitting on the seat next to you likes.
