  • Thanks to Chris Dale for sharing this sequence... Chris was a 2nd year deck apprentice serving in RFA Tidesurge 1966~1967 and this is a converted cine film taken whilst the ship was supporting the Beira Patrol blockade.

I was on Tidesurge in 1968, fun ship. You know what they said in those days, “chatty but happy” . Still have the photographs, lost the ‘T’ shirt.

Gosh, this takes me back. I was 2nd on Tidereach at this time, and have superb memories, especially R & R in Mombasa, and visiting the game reserves.
I also have cine of my time in the RFA which I hope to post soon for interest. Very happy times they were.
    Thanks Chris.

Many thanks for this. Amazing quality. I think my dad missed most of my first year on patrol here. He served on Tide Surge 1971 or 1972. I remember flying out to Malta to join him...and also a fuel spill when moored in Gosport. My favourite picture of him is him in full uniform standing at the foot of the gangway on the quayside somewhere.

A very interesting piece of vintage film of which I doubt there is very much about. In these days of digital media it seems there is always a recording facility at hand.
I was a Deck Apprentice with BP Tankers at the same time as this film represents and how I wish I had had the means to record some of the events and experiences I witnessed.
Films such as this stimulates the memory so thanks for that.
