1973 and our voyage started from Pompey on Blue Rover for Princess Anne's honeymoon cruise alongside Britannia around the Caribbean . Then off on or way through the Panama Canal towards NZ for the 1974 Commonwealth Games in Christchurch. Quick Pit-stop in Pitcairn but fate intervened and we caught fire just after sailing and were towed by Britannia to Tahiti, her highness had jumped ship in the Galapagos Islands and flown home for Christmas, so no drama there. 6 great weeks in Papeete playing heaps of rugby and then head back to UK in a bit of a disgrace. Britannia carried on to NZ where she was met by Tidesurge to continue the Commonwealth Games Jollies`

Fantastic video and memories. Joined the Grey Funnel line in 1976 as a JRO. Plumleaf being my first ship. Picked her up at during refit in South Shields. Stored up then sailed for Curacao, Rio, Falklands, Simon's Town, Bahrain, Gib then Portland. What a trip. Portishead Radio (GKA) thank you. Made the dizzy heights of ROA in the end, paying off in 1991 to join HM Coastguard. Sailed with some fantastic people both crew and Officers. Enjoyed every minute. Even met my wife to be !!! during a work up. Those memories. Quite amazing and fantastic. Long live the Grey Funnel line.

I am reading the book “Four times a scapegoat” by Captain Doug Harvey, who is the Scottish captain you see in this documentary that ran the ship up the beach. This whole trip is described in the book. Very interesting! A colourful character who has led an interesting life.

My mother, brother and I spent a few wonderful days on Tidesurge when we were based in Singapore. My father was in the Navy and had gone off on Tarbatness with my older brother for a jolly of some sort, and somehow we got invited here. I was 7 and my younger brother was 6. I remember the wonderful food (thank you), the fishtank with a Lion fish, a lovely man with a big red beard whose name I forget but he was so kind to us - and the junior quartermasters certificates which we earned after 'steering' the ship! Fantastic memories.....

A very interesting piece of vintage film of which I doubt there is very much about. In these days of digital media it seems there is always a recording facility at hand. I was a Deck Apprentice with BP Tankers at the same time as this film represents and how I wish I had had the means to record some of the events and experiences I witnessed. Films such as this stimulates the memory so thanks for that.
