    Wee bit sedated! Good job. We just took on a neglected donkey with feet like this mini . He is a standard size, already bonded with the jennet we have who was a kill auction save. Last week was spent on worming and ground manners, this week will be vet, then farrier. We are retired farmers, had a standardbred race horse stable that we retired and now the two donkeys own us.

    • @Horsingabout
      @Horsingabout  6 років тому +3

      No sedation just relief. Did one similar 2 days ago and hit a gusher on 1 foot. Abscess I got covered!

    • @farmwife7944
      @farmwife7944 6 років тому +2

      Horsingabout one of ours did the same to the vet when the vet was trying to put a small hole in the hoof to drain the gravel. But wow what immediate pain relief for the horse who went from looking like he was literally on his last dying leg to being ready to get back out on the track and take on all comers.

    • @Horsingabout
      @Horsingabout  6 років тому +2

      Yesterday I called back on an old mini I trimmed last Tuesday to remove a bandage & dressing I put on after striking a gusher abscess. Similar to your bloke, instant relief. There was that much blood & gunk spread everywhere and all over me the other day I was covered. Almost thought I had cut his jugular for a minute?

    • @farmwife7944
      @farmwife7944 6 років тому +3

      Horsingabout haha. Equines can be so dramatic! We had a harness stable for years and my husband was, still is, old school style and used poultices and such that worked great. I don't know what you use for packing and bandaging hooves but he used disposable baby diapers and duct tape, even bored race horses couldn't rip it all off, they did give it a good try though.

    If I had a few acres of land, I would have 2 tiny horses, 2 tiny goats , 2 miniature cows , 2 miniature donkeys and of course 2 BASSET HOUNDS . Needless to say, they all would be taken to the vet right away to get spayed or neutered. I just love tiny animals.

    My first career idea was farriery. But I'm slightly built, 5'3", so I realized that a poorly trained horse who couldn't stand still would only have to move a little to break me. Everyone said 'do what you love' and I still love horses

      Boots was one of 3 minis rescued from the killing race at the knackery. The owner unknown had sent them there so no one could see their feet. I also trimmed another (name shots) as well and the third was ok.

  • @qumbie06
    @qumbie06 6 років тому +1

    Great trimming job. I don't think that some people realize how quickly a horse can get into this state. I went away for 2 months to help a sick family member and left my horses in the care of someone else and my farrier was due to come in that period for our regular 8 week trim. He never showed up and through some miscommunication and lack of knowledge from the person who was watching them my mini's hoofs had some pretty decent boots on herself. Not as bad as this but she is also on a high protein food for hoof growth so I think that played a factor. She missed about what would be the equivalent of 3 trimming sessions and ended up in this state. She wasn't neglected a good person was watching her and loving her but just not knowledgable about how long hoofs should actually be until they started to look more like boots. Not saying this is the same case for boots, being that he was given to the slaughterhouse basically means no one really cared for him so the situations are not comparable in that aspect. We are working with our vet and farrier now to get our mini back in shape. We have had 3 trims now( every 3 weeks) and she is no where where boots is. You seemed to just be able to take care of the majority of boots problem all in one day and with no X-rays. How did you know how much to take off without hitting anything important? You just sawed and there it went! I am starting to think my new farrier isn't as aggressive as he needs to be to get my mini back in the shape she should be in by now.

    • @Horsingabout
      @Horsingabout  6 років тому +1

      Thank you for your comment, I have to agree with you all the way.
      As far as knowing how far to go I find the slipper feet not as bad as what I call stilts feet lamanitic feet are the touchiest. I never used to trim as hard as I do now since being shown by a good lady trimmer (Sandy C) just how far you could go on a lamanitic horse but I have never found 2 hooves the same in all my days.
      This vid was taken at the trimming course I did years ago on the last day and thats the day I said thats the sort of work I want to do. Foolish I have done so many since while everyone gets the easy ones. ua-cam.com/video/qEXkCBbyU3c/v-deo.html
      I guess there are many reasons horses end up in this state some perhaps excusable however most people need shooting for letting animals go to extremes.

    • @qumbie06
      @qumbie06 6 років тому +2

      I agree most are non excusable, even in my case it really is non-excusable and while it happened and we are taking all measures to try to correct it bottom line is it should have never happened in the first place and we learned a lesson at the expense of the animals. Ours is more of a slipper foot not stilt like. However, it looked like your mini had very wide open slippers where mine had curled closed hoofs, I believe there is a word for that but I am not sure in the horse world what it is called. We had the 1st same farrier for 5 years, he would come get the work done and leave-did a good job but we didn't have much of a relationship other than scheduling. What happened to him I am just not sure as he never returned any phone calls or tried to contact us again. My farrier now is super friendly but I'm learning that I need to not be shy and advocate somewhat for what I feel may need to be done more aggressively and learning he may not be comfortable with that, which is fine, but he may just not be as knowledge as you are with what the point of stopping is with the fine line of being too easy and then not aggressive enough in a situation like this. I am trying to learn as much as I can to make sure I can advocate correctly without overstepping. I am also trying to learn to help maintain in between trimming and possible one day if I am knowledgeable enough to try to do their feet myself. I appreciate videos like yours and all those on your channel to help show some different aspects of trimming from someone who is obviously well versed on the subject.

    • @Horsingabout
      @Horsingabout  6 років тому +1

      The basis of my learning theory is from Jamie Jackson & Pete Ramey as well as exchanging information with other trimmers on FB. No reason you cant trim yours yourself. Not hard to pick up the basics then little & often!

    Great job! I have always wanted a horse but it just didn’t work out. Now that I am retired I would love to give a home to a rescued pony. How much pasture do they need? About how much does it cost for feed, vet care and medication, blacksmithing etc... per month? I don’t know if NC has a rescue group. I’ll have to search. Thanks!

    • @Horsingabout
      @Horsingabout  5 років тому +1

      Very generous offer. Probably better sponsoring a rescue pony with a reputable organisation with visiting rights. They are a herd animal and need company so you would have to have a couple. Additionall there is the time and effort and expense of looking after them. Depends where you live too I guess?

    What I know of horse hoof and the care of could be written on a matchbook cover with a fat crayon, so forgive a stupid question(?) How do hooves get like this? I've never seen wild ponies with this condition, what's the difference between them and domesticated that causes such an issue?

    • @Horsingabout
      @Horsingabout  5 років тому +1

      Wild horses live in an environment that suits them and travel up to 50km day browsing & grazing. Domesticated captive horses have to put up with that which they are provided which in most instances one way or another is inadequate for their requirements and therefore develop maladies wild horses never experience. I am unaware if wild horses get cushings and nature takes care of those that fall by the wayside because of disease or injury. The old survival of the fittest!

    • @Lauren-vd4qe
      @Lauren-vd4qe 5 років тому

      Wild equines encounter plenty of rocks etc that chip n scrape off any excess Hoof growth and they eat a scrubby existence diet that don't make the hooves grow much. Tame equines have soft ground to walk on ie grassy pastures n wood chip arenas don't chip off much excess Hoof plus tame equines eat a luxurious diet that make hooves grow not a sparse diet.
