    The #1 tank of all time is the one I drew when I was 6 years old. It was covered in spikes so no one could climb up on it. The spikes were also electrified, clearly indicated by all the lightning bolts shooting out of them. It was totally unbeatable and invincible and that's why it's #1.

      Using Al's own unique brand of pub landlord logic for a moment...
      The British invented tanks for use in WWI, therefore any tanks built after that time are basically based on British tank designs and tank-building knowledge, therefore all tanks are basically of British descent, thus all tanks are basically British and so all are worthy of being considered for inclusion on Al's top 5 list of (British) tanks from around the world.

    Finally! Someone recognises the Cromwell!
    Even the German Leopard main battle tank values the principals of the Cromwell, speed and firepower over armour.
    Lindy Beige has highlighted one story in which a platoon of Cromwells escaped a field of flak 88s by *jumping over a 12 foot canal* despite one of them having a notoriously bad engine.

      Ben Conway If we're talking about the Sea Fury I think we are, then yes. The one I'm thinking of was the carrier version of an advanced British prop fighter, relegated to the role of a very effective ground attacker due to the dominance of jets in fighter roles.

    • @CyarSkirata

    • @CyarSkirata
      @CyarSkirata 6 років тому +8

      Ben Conway Answering the question you're actually asking rather than the one I lazily assumed, the story was a first-hand account by the commander of the lead tank, and given the speed of the tank I don't doubt it. There are numerous photos of Cromwells jumping from dirt ramps, and with the slight lip the commander said was there it seems entirely feasible for a Cromwell to jump the distance as two roughly average height men lying head-to-toe.

    • @CyarSkirata
      @CyarSkirata 6 років тому +10

      The Cromwell with the bad engine is reported to have landed not quite fully on the edge, and torn down much of the canal's bank as it dragged itself to safety.

      Okay... I admit Slavic history has had plenty of bad and even humiliating periods to go along with good ones, and I let pride in my heritage go to my head so that I cherrypicked moments in history to draw conclusions from. But if that's wrong for *me* to do, why should *you* get to do the exact same thing in order to engage in what's essentially hate speech?
      The phrase 'slave' is indeed derived from 'Slav'... but so what? The root is an archaic one derived from Slavs being carried away in bondage during the 9th century by Spanish Moors. It doesn't go any further back, and isn't the result of some sort of world consensus that we're natural born butt-monkeys. Like many other cultures that were forced to serve another in large numbers, our name became an alternate term our masters used for their human property, and by a quirk of history the word 'slave' spread beyond those kingdoms to become a more generalized term that's lasted the ages.
      Speaking of which: 'the last few thousand years of history' at least _implies_ a timeframe far beyond where historians and archaeologists totally lose track of the Slavs and their ancestors. The farthest back anyone can be sure they even existed as a people is only around *two* thousand years ago.

    I didn't expect the Cromwell to be number 1. However I just visited the Tank Museum today for the first time and went on a tour guide about British Heavy Tanks of 1943-1945. The Cromwell was a really fast tank capable of doing 40mph however they had to restrict it to 30mph because it was hard to control. But a really interesting bit of information about British Tanks was this... We were not incapable of designing good tanks. The problem we had was making good tanks our industry was not geared up for it and to gear up for it we would have to stop making tanks for a while and we couldn't afford to do that. So what limited the Cromwell was we couldn't slope or curve its armour because of our industry limitations.

      MEHT43 You sir are an uneducated jackass. The host of the top 5 tanks is a British comedian. University educated by the way. The Tiger,Tiger,burning bright is the lead line from a poem that was taught in schools. I learned it in Grade 9 as a matter of fact.
      I thought it was quite amusing and not a little apropos. I suggest a paper dictionary to look up the word apropos as using computers has clearly taught you nothing.
      I will tell you the poets first name of William.
      Do you deserve this condescending post of amused contempt ?
      Well,the last line of yours was your feeble attempt at insult.
      The real clue was to you my nonsensical post. You should have said to yourself, huh?
      Maybe I should either say nothing or do some homework. Homework. Are you familiar with the word ? When did you drop out of school by the way ?
      Jackass. There is homily. Look that one up too. Dates back to ancient Greece. Saying nothing may sometimes make you look like a fool,but opening it removes all doubt.
      Do not offer insult when puzzling things are in front of you.
      That is today's lesson. Although I doubt it will do any good. Ignorance may be cured with learning,but stupid is forever. When brains were being handed out,you thought they said trains and went and hid in the closet.

      Oh I think the MkIV Male would be there for the first tank on tank kill and Cambrais. Fruit based drinks for the lady tanks.
      So I reckon
      5: Matilda. Lovey tank, Shame about the Aussie name, would work great behind a bar.
      4: Mk IV Male. It was never confused.
      3: Churchill. It's in the name!
      2: Cromwell. Had the best haircut, listens to Queen.
      1: Centurion. World domination for the Empire! Of all the tanks, this is the only one that watched Where Eagles Dare.

      You think so? Just re-watch the part about M4 Sherman. Fflammable? Bad armor? It wasn't flammable at all and armor was effectively 4 mm thinner then armor on Tiger 1 or late Cromwell and something like 40 mm thicker then on T-34.

    • @wierdalien1
      @wierdalien1 6 років тому

      Stanisław Szczypuła the early ones were kinda flammable, the later ones definitely werent.

    • @Cloudman572
      @Cloudman572 6 років тому

      Stanisław Szczypuła, 1) all tanks are flammable and early Shermans worse than many- Al Murray correct. 2) tiger tank armor 60 to 80mm effective side armour, sherman 38mm effective side armour- Al Murray correct.
      All the data I have seen shows T34 effective frontal armour the same as Sherman not 40mm less and better than Sherman on side armour. What is your source of data?

    • @stanisawszczypua9076
      @stanisawszczypua9076 6 років тому

      1)procentege of casualties in Shermans were lower then in other medium tanks of that era, there are records of soviet soldiers standing in puddle of fuel there was so much leakage and there was no anti-fire screen between engine and crew compartment in T-34. 2)who the hell care about side armor? its real life not World of Tanks, you either have your enemy in front of you or you are dead. There is a reason MBTs doesn't have good side armor either.3) T-34 had 45 mm angled armor effectively around 6o mm, while Sherman sloped armor was effectively 96 mm thick (later models way over 100 mm).

    you definitely have to say tiger at least once more, you have not said it enough. ;).
    the most important tank for "Blitzkrieg" was not the Panzer II but the Panzer 38(t)...originally built for the chech army, constructed by an (exiled) russian...but the best, most mobile and most reliable tank the germans had in poland and france. It was the panzer 38(t) that allowed guderian to "scout ahead in force".

    • @patrickholt2270
      @patrickholt2270 5 років тому +2

      Yeah. It's one of those crucial things that would have made Hitler's prospects very different if the Allies had gone to war to defend Czechoslovakia. The Germans would have had to fight the 38(t)s, instead of being able to fill their divisions with them.

    Just like the Cromwell, the Centurion is very rarely mentioned, even though it was the greatest tank in the world for many years! Even then, it was only superceded by another British tank, the Chieftain. Sorry but a bit bias, but 🇬🇧 currently has the only undefeated tank in combat history, the Challenger! It may not have all the bells and whistles of other tanks, but it's pretty much indestructable! 🇬🇧💪

    • @henrysokol3466
      @henrysokol3466 2 роки тому +1

      Britain also had a lot of inexcusably poor tanks at that time and before, like the Matilda I and TOG 2. Or the Covenanter, a tank flawed enough a large production run was never put into use despite desperate need.
      Not to say by this the Challenger isn't excellent... merely not to read too much into its success.

    Excellent Mr Murray, that University of Oxford history education put to good use. Totally agree with you, indeed Generalleutant Fitz Bayerlin panzer Lehr also agreed with you, being very complementary about the Cromwell and he considered the general who drew up the Normandy plan, the greatest general in the history of Warfare and we know who that was. He considered the tiger and panthers unsuitable for Western Europe, he preferred the mark 4. Re the tiger against The firefly , Northamptonshire Yeomanry war diary, “Three Tigers in 12 minutes not bad business”, not a bad shot Mr Ekins. Also Villers-Bocage when 7th Armoured recovered from the ambush they knocked out his squadron of 4 or 5 tigers. Love to know Dan Snow’s 5 and indeed James Holland’s 5 top tanks

    • @a.morphous66
      @a.morphous66 5 років тому +1

      John Cornell Most of those knocked-out tanks could be repaired. But a Tiger? When those things were down, they were down for the count. From a strategic perspective, the Sherman and Cromwell were just better in almost every way. And the Second World War was decided through strategy, not small-scale engagements.

    • @DC9622
      @DC9622 5 років тому +1

      John Cornell, interesting points, The latest view it could have been 4 or 5 by this troop destroyed lead by company commander of A Squadron, Captain Boardman, he took personal control of his 3d Platoon, of 3 MarkV a and the Mark Vc. There is also Sergeant George Dring, MC and Bar known as Killer Dring, who was very successful at destroying Tigers and Panthers, in Akilla his Firefly, A squadron Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry famous for a tiger and panther in one engagement look out for the photograph. There is also further evidence, that a Churchill 6 pound with APSD destroyed 3 Tigers before being disabled, and a Firefly destroying a Tiger 2 at close range. The issue is confirming the type of tank, the Tigers only engaged the commonwealth troops during Normandy, but perception was every tank was a Tiger, not helped by the later version of Mark IV which looked similar.
      Undertaken by the latest work on the Heavy tank battalions Shedgehammers, “Of the nine Tigers that entered the town of Villers-Bocage throughout the day's battle, including Wittmann's Tiger, all but one was either damaged or destroyed.Whatever the exact number of tanks that were totally destroyed, it is indisputable that the 1st Company of SS-Heavy Tank Battalion 101 was combat ineffective by the end of the day. Far from being the resounding and overwhelming German success that many accounts portray, when looked at in total, although they undeniably did stop the British advance, the Germans' victory was essentially Pyrrhic. Further, the Tigers lost during this battle were never replaced throughout the remainder of the Normandy campaign. The losses of the British, however, were quickly replaced. For example, three days later, on 16 June 1944, the 4th County of London Yeomanry was issued replacement vehicles and manned them with reserve crews.”
      This assessment quotes 133 engaged 3 survived, other figures quote 123 tiger 1 with 3 survived plus 47 Tiger 2 7 survived. These may be consistent with the 3 returned by Panzer Lehr before the battle. They left all their Tigers at the maintenance point, so they could get to Normandy from Le Mans quickly. Either way , the commonwealth army were responsible for the direct or indirect destruction of 94% of the tigers engaged, catching up with the rest during the Great Swan battle.

      Bookhead714 you are correct, Miles Dempsey famously stated of Goodwood, tactical not a success, not reaching the objectives but Strategically an overwhelming success “has when German regiment were torn to pieces during these great battles, the survivors regrouped as KampfenGruppen. Admin, troops, cooks, engineers, signallers, Luftwaffe flak units, were quickly amalgamated, and with a couple of tanks, guns and mortars were once again a superb tactical defensive unit. “ Patrick Delaforce, The Black Bull. Strategically and operationally it spelled the end. Eisenhower’s greatest mistake was the broad front strategy and not to follow Montgomery’s suggestion to attack on a signal Northern front into the Rhine, General Blumentritt chief of staff for Field-Marshal von Rundstedt. Interestingly, at least I find, with regards to his Cromwell comments. I had a relative that served in Tanks throughout Normandy. At the Breakout of Caen, the Falaise Pocket, Belgium and served up in the Netherlands. They fought in Sherman's and Cromwell's. I was fortunate enough to get the book on the history of the regiment - going into great depth of what they experienced. If anyone is interested, the unit he served in 44th RTR, are represented (poorly) in Band of Brothers - Replacements. Battle of Nuenen. The Cromwell's that get knocked out by the Tiger and Jagdpanther (both of which weren't there) is 'B Company'. Historically, however, it was a much different story.
