James, I have to admit I was surprised to see what Bachmann put into this locomotive. I have seen it up close and personal and you are very much correct. The sound is up there with prime sound Decoders. Thank you for putting another voice to N scale. We may be small, but we pack a big punch LOL. Just to add also, the pulling power with 20 cars up 2% grade was priceless. The cars were from the 1950 era, but she could have pulled a modern freight consist as well. Please keep up the excellent work and peace be with you, and to your co-host. Arthur
Great review of the N-Scale Loco. Before they moved the proto types one was able to crawl around on them and get into the cab. Good to see they cleaned them up some.
This is a quality locomotive in my opinion and I was lucky to buy the no sound version on uk eBay site . I have two bachmann locomotives and the rest is Kato and one Atlas. I can’t wait to set up USA layout. Thanks for the quality review as always, keep up the good work.
Now,if we can just get Kato to build a DD-40 EX with dual motors 16 wheel drive and quad flywheels.I think that Bachmann has hit this one out of the park. I love the sound of this engine and there was no mention of how authentic the twin-turbo chargers sound, this is authentic as it gets. The only other"detail"that I can think of is to make it"smoke"from each 567 V-16 2-cycle prime mover. Another issue that wasn't mentioned in this video is if this model has 16 wheel drive with dual motors or what?????.Thumbs up😀👍.
Another great review and I really enjoyed the extra footage of you going to the real thing. Love watching your stuff you really know how to get people excited about the hobby. Very impressive loco.
Starting Building model train layouts all any gauge that's what model Railroading is all about if you love, model Railroading do it till you can't do it no more! Best addiction hands down Best way to Spend your money and not getting in trouble.
I've recently bought one on eBay and I was quite impressed with the lighting and sound quality. There is an issue with the drivetrain for the rear truck where the shaft or gears are skipping. Upon a search for other units, I found this problem in several other listings. Has anyone else experienced this and if so, is there a fix to this? I'd really like to run this more often.
God bless you James , is this video of things to come in the future ? Are you changing scales from HO to N ? Woo is me . LOL. Altho the mu hoses and the cut levers are nissing . The hand rails seem to be out of scale and the cab figures are not there . The sound is butt kicking . I am thinking is that sound still that good on smaller engines ? what is it like in steam ? As always you did a good job on the review , and having BOB there with you really put the iceing on the cake . Randy
jlwii2000 you seem to like up a lot. just some thing to know about n scale is that you can do the complete union pacific heritage program, including dda40x,844,3984,4014,e9s and all passenger cars but the track inspection cars.
Wow, last comment 3 yrs ago. What worries me it the back walk as doesn't look like a man could even pass from one side to the other as the railing looks tight against the engine. Wondering if the measurements are right?
It sounds very nice, my only complaint is that darn truck mounted pilot. I think they should've added an optional non truck mounted pilot. I'm up to two sound equipped engines currently a BLI SP&S E7A and IMRC NP FP7A. both sound nice, I want to get my Kato GS4 equipped with sound. Jlwii2000, you'd be more than at home in N scale we have most of those UP engines available #844(4) will be joining the UP rosters soon.
Great job on the revue, and great vid overall. I haven't checked in on your channel in awhile as real life has kept me away from the hobby, but glad to see you branching out a little to N scale, I bought this same loco a couple of years ago (did a little revue also) and I too was very surprised and impressed by Bachmann's effort with this loco....I had a problem with my DDA40X not long after buying it tho, as it is supposed to be DCC and DC capable, I think something happened as I had to loco go dead on me after switching it back over to a DC layout....was a little disappointed and intended to check with Bachmann on possibly sending it back to them for a check-up, but real life things interfered and it's packed away for now....hope to get a chance to let Bachmann see w2hat they can do with it, as I also hope to find the time to do more modeling soon...in the meantime theres still vids on you tube. Great vids, keep up the great work.
Hi, Does anybody know what sound module I will need and speaker I will need for this quality model. I’ve just bought one without sound 6900. I’m from the uk but don’t mind if I have ship from the states or were ever. Thanks for review I was so lucky to get one from the uk.
Great Review.Amazing what they can do in Nscale now.Funny they put the grab irons and sand caps on the nose short hood that they do not in ho scale .Seems they like to do that in ho scale diesel for some reason.
Nice looking Engine the Front and Backside of the awalkway don’t think there’s no room But the Sides no problem Hum.the firecracker horn could of moved Behind the Light.
Hello, I bought this as my first model train because of your video here. Any chance you would be willing to do a maintenance video for this? The manual is very vague. Thank you!
Better late then never, they have to do that to make the locomotive useful for the smaller lay out owner with tighter curves. Otherwise it would only run on real scale lay outs which are even hard to find among the large club lay outs. Not everything can be made exactly to scale. if you measure the railings and calculate that back to the real locomotive, they need to be 4 times thicker on the real train. The same for the couplers which are a bout 6 - 7 times to large for the N scale locomotive.
I seen a different video where you did a review of I believe was this same bachman engine but it was HO... now I can't find it to comment on. my question is I just tonight got the engine (bachman and in ho) sound and lights I have control of on my NCE pro cab. but when I try to drive it forward or backwards it don't move.. engine sound revs up however... just no movement. Any suggestions on a remedy for this??? thanks for the videos!
Yes, the sound is great, but the model itself is junk. If you got to have a DDA40x and you don't care about all the flaws that it has, then buy one. It is a toy and not a serious model like Kato, scaletrains.com or Atlas offers. Years ago when it first came out in HO scale, I added a great deal of detail and everything else to make it look almost and I do mean almost as good as mine then Overland models dda40x. At least the hood with was to scale, but the in scale model is too fat like an old athearn model. It just isn't a good model and Bachman should be ashamed for producing such a nasty looking model. I know they can do better than this.
Hello, as far as I'm concerned the best thing about that unit is the sound. The trucks look flat and have no real depth. The paint looks like our president skin color, which is Orange and is too thick, which makes the detail look muddy. Fuel tank is wrong and where they put the oscillating strobe light is in the wrong position. It should be in the center of the cab. There are only a few locomotives that I would accept that has swinging couplers with the trucks, that would be the Con Cor U50 and Veranda gas turbine as the Prototype actually had their couples affixed to the trucks. There's a local hobby shop where I live and it has two of them for $90 each. I just can't put my money down for this model. I think your Bachmann really wants to be included in the same conversation is Kato and Atlas, though the sound is pretty good, they lose it in the details and I would have been a lot rougher than you guys. If you're going to spend upwards of $120 for a unit such as this or any locomotive, it has got to be right and better than this. The Overland models N-Scale version of the DDA40X is much much better than this and I would buy one of them before I would consider buying a Bachmann model. It probably wouldn't be so bad if they offered undecorated version and I could fix a lot of things yeah, but they don't. I bet you that pain is a bear to get off. Until then I will just hold onto my money and hopefully and I do mean hopefully, Kato, Atlas and or scaletrains will offer this model. It is a natural for N-Scale.
James, I have to admit I was surprised to see what Bachmann put into this locomotive. I have seen it up close and personal and you are very much correct. I found this locomotive for $119, I think ill be ordering it soon, thanks for the review it always helps.
Great review of the N-Scale Loco. Before they moved the proto types one was able to crawl around on them and get into the cab. Good to see they cleaned them up some.
I've gone to n scale as I can do more on my limited space. Also I'm very impressed with the kato locomotives.
Agreed man
Me too man
thank you, looking forward to ordering one .I have an Nscale layout.Looking forward to you starting your new layout.
Great review on the N scale. The sound was really good.
This is a quality locomotive in my opinion and I was lucky to buy the no sound version on uk eBay site . I have two bachmann locomotives and the rest is Kato and one Atlas.
I can’t wait to set up USA layout. Thanks for the quality review as always, keep up the good work.
Comparing the model to the Prototype is pretty cool good job
Hi James! I just ordered my n scale bachmann DD40AX#6940 because you did a kick assed video of this locomotive, thank you!
Now,if we can just get Kato to build a DD-40 EX with dual motors 16 wheel drive and quad flywheels.I think that Bachmann has hit this one out of the park.

Very good review James I liked it a lot!!!
Ordered me two of these because at this video and I run Z and G Scale!
VERY IMPRESSIVE FOR BACHMANN AND FOR N SCALE. I BET WE WILL SEE AN INCREASE IN N SCALERS OVER THE NEXT SEVERAL YEARS.
Another great review and I really enjoyed the extra footage of you going to the real thing. Love watching your stuff you really know how to get people excited about the hobby. Very impressive loco.
Awesome review James thanks for sharing
N Scale this day and age Like them so Much Better Quality nice.
I'm totally impressed with N scale
haha Yes! nice review James, and Great shirt Da'Bob!
I like the way he wears that hat.
I always wondered what the heavy duty hand rail stands are for on the DD40X. Sand Boxes, go figure makes sense.
nice engine - hope you enjoy N-scale
Hi James, great review. I found 1 of these dda40x but cant figure out the F# to start and shutdown the engines. Not the mute button
Starting Building model train layouts all any gauge that's what model Railroading is all about if you love, model Railroading do it till you can't do it no more! Best addiction hands down Best way to Spend your money and not getting in trouble.
Sand hatch, Ha! Learned a detail lesson from James!
Not bad, check out the new bachmann spectrum line for steam....pretty impressive too. Just make sure you get some katos.

First a g scale review then an N scale review... are you feeling ok?
lol
Great review James of that smaller scale. :-P
Hi there. Does the model operate properly on Kato Analog system (DC)?
I was there this summer!
God bless you James , is this video of things to come in the future ? Are you changing scales from HO to N ? Woo is me . LOL. Altho the mu hoses and the cut levers are nissing . That is some kind of power
great job

Great video James
I know i'm late I just got one of these myself and I was wondering how do you get the sound with kato unitrack from a bachmann sound value locomotive?
Do you sell these items after set up.?
Where can I find these?!?! I've been looking everywhere forever and can't find anything
Can you do a vid of under the body
What diameter turn can this thing make? I ordered one a while back but just starting to design my layout and I want to make sure I can run it. Thanks
The smallest standard Bachmann diameter. But if you have the space, make them larger, the overhang look a little weird.
its all most the same
15:56
great review btw :)
Cool video.
They should've put that Prime mover sound on the SD40 it sounds alot more like an idling sd40 while the default sound in the SD40 sounds like a GP20

Hey! Who is that guy laying down on the ground at 18:00? Oh wait, that is me. Being artistic with a camera shot.

Hello, I bought this as my first model train because of your video here. Any chance you would be willing to do a maintenance video for this? The manual is very vague. Thank you!
BECAUSE YOU BOUGHT A BACHMANN!
why do the steps turn with the trucks instead of being fixed to the front/rear of the frame...
Better late then never, they have to do that to make the locomotive useful for the smaller lay out owner with tighter curves. Otherwise it would only run on real scale lay outs which are even hard to find among the large club lay outs.

They should put a Union Pacific logo on that pentagon thing on the sides.
Only one dda40x runs and that would ruin the history
I seen a different video where you did a review of I believe was this same bachman engine but it was HO... now I can't find it to comment on. my question is I just tonight got the engine (bachman and in ho) sound and lights I have control of on my NCE pro cab. but when I try to drive it forward or backwards it don't move.. engine sound revs up however... just no movement. Are you giving away any trains
Ps I’ve subscribed 👍
I have to admit I have sticker shock at the price tag on this but.. that is a LOT of awesome to pack into a N scale locomotive.
link is just dcc. cant find sound equipped units anymore
It's two locomotives under one shell, an A unit and a B unit.
Seriously guy, leave the N scale reviews to folks who model in the scale and know what to expect.
That's the factory paint on those auto racks, not custom. Micro-Trains does a lot of factory weathering and graffiti.
The first Botchmann diesel that didn't sound like rocks in a blender. And yes I spelled Botchmann the way it should be spelled.
Actually almost all the current engines even the train set ones are really smooth running at least the ho ones.
