I had everything taken apart on a very similar unit, then my son came in and helpfully rearranged all the pieces into different orientations, and I wasn't sure if I had things put back together right. I had figured out almost all, but couldn't get the contact strip inserted correctly. (Put the fuel tank on AFTER placing the contact strips!) Everything is running great now, thanks!

Your clear instructions on disassembly and things to check helped me fix the problem (looks like I over oiled it and the bearing springs were also a bit bent). I was a bit freaked out about disassembling my favorite Kato but your video walked me through it with no drama. I echo your comments on how well engineered the Kato drive train and chassis are. I have 6 Kato N scale locomotives, 3 Amtrak P42’s, a Santa Fe EMD SDP40F, a Southern Pacific EMD SD70M & the Southern Pacific Daylight steam locomotive number 4449. I bought all of mine brand new & they all work great. When buying model railroad locomotives for model railroads, buy brand new from a hobby store or from the manufacturer. It is more expensive that way but it’s worth it and it will save you problems later as compared to buying them from unreliable sources.
Great video! I've had some Dash 9s that made a lot of noise. I was able to troubleshoot to the point that I knew it wasn't the trucks or the motor, but didn't try lubing the worm gear bearings. Definitely something I'm going to try the next time. Thanks for the vid!
Great Video but I noticed on the Very First Truck you reassemble the one Wheel towards the bottom of the Truck had what looks to be a Imperfection in the wheel or looks like it has a flat spot in it, I had a Kato Amtrak Engine A F40PH one Rear Wheel Right in the center it looked as it had a spru Bur in it like the Wheel had been cut off a Spru.. In your Video I had to look a few times and @ 8:25 to 8:30 is where I seen that on the Wheel unless it was a bit oil or water but just wanted to pass on what I seen but what you do with your Engines is Well worth watching Great Video always Great Video's thanks for sharing them with Us..
Good Video on maintenance of a Kato, I agree they are a well built and designed Loco. Did you lube up the truck gears off camera or did I miss that? which works better you think. the plastic safe oil or the white grease?
I find that the trucks don’t need any lubrication. They recommend the grease on the worm gears. I will sometimes put light oil on the worm gears. That’s what I find works best.
My brand new ES44AC motor is very buzzy / has a lot of vibration. When the train is fully assembled and running it sounds like an orbital sander or Dremel motor at 11 o'clock or higher on the Kato standard power pack. I removed everything as you did and tested the motor itself with a 9 volt. Very buzzy. Is there anything I can do?
Well… it’s a nice engine… do you think it’s worth getting a new motor from Kato directly? If not, maybe the flywheels are bent. Try prying them until they are straight.
I fixed 2 of my Dash9s thanks to this video. Keep up the great work!

I'm not sure what that is. maybe some of the anodizing got damaged. Anyway the engine runs great now.

A friend told me the plastic has some lubricating properties so don't lube them .

Kato need to go back to the old mechanism the new sprung ones are junk
