Hey Glenn, thanks for your advices that other people asked for but encourage me to pursue my dream of being a full time musician. It’s a long road to sucess and for me succes is not to be a superstar but to make a deccent living out of music, so that I don’t need a “real job” in order to pay the bills and buy a new gear. I always listen to people saying that I should give up cause I’m not that young anymore and do someting else but fuck them. I’m not 60 years old, but 30, and I would rather do my best and fail then never try. Cheers, man, and keep up with your content.
I bought Glenn's IR pack and am really impressed with it. I can't wait to see what else is in the works with Lancaster, you have a paying customer for life.
New location, adding new money and influencers, a new focus... I’m sure nothing will change that warrants a revolt. No need to worry. It truly is ok; Glenn, you have worked long and hard enough to get yours! Things will change, but the “Golden” period of this channel spanned a couple years and helped many! Thank you! Best of luck!
Hey Glenn. I played guitar on my hardcore band between 92 and 95 (guitar, bass, drums and singer), I never stopped practicing. Me and the drummer started playing together again two months ago, and we were offered to open for some friends with the old band. Our singer isn't interested in playing again, so I took the challenge of doing it. 20+ years without performing in front of an audience I was very nervous about singing and playing, so, I started remembering all your tips, I practice (I never could sing and play), and finally worked on my stage presence. The day came and I did it, felt very good. My wife saw me live and told me I transform, my kids saw the video and told me the same, friends from other band's told me that I did great and never would expect that I never sang before, I know I can improve, but your tips were a big step up. So thank you and fuck you Glenn.
Oh man! I am so happy to see you being able to work in LA, awesome, keep up the amazing work. I hosted a concert this night (and played aswel) and I learned so much from your vids, I think the sound guys were actually enjoying themselves and were appreciated for their effort. The best tip was to just let them do what they do, and the sound was great! Thanks. :)
20:00 I agree with you man, don't let assholes get to you. We all get better in the long run after learning from our mistakes. I've been watching the channel for I while and I gotta say I'm hooked. I've played guitar for about 3 years. I appreciate advice and answers you give us viewers. Thanks and keep up the great work Glenn! STAY METAL
Mr Glenn . I have a question. My parents are devout Satanist . They believe they are decendants from Vlad the Impaler. I want to attend a Christian rock concert. They say if I go... They will sacrifice me via being impaled to their god Lucifer. Should I risk impalement to see my favorite Christian band. Cheers from Romania.
Shane, I'm sorry to inform you but your parents are right, Satan has the way better musicians anyway. My advice would be, take them out to a Ghost concert.
@wildcatter63 Actually, there's a theory that says The Devil threw the competition so that the deadly sin of pride would be planted and nurtured in Johnny. By losing the battle, and feeding Johnny's ego, he won the war. I don't personally buy it, but it's a theory some people have.
Hey Glenn, What are your thoughts on how bass is written for modern metal music today? If you listen to guys like Steve Harris or Geezer Butler, they played melodies that counterpoint guitar riffs. Nowadays it seems like most bass players play the main melody note for note and nothing more. For me, this might be why bass players are not as committed to practicing or caring for the instrument as some used to. It seems like not all, but most modern metal bands only view the bass as a “filler” instrument and not anything spontaneous for the genre. While this is not an excuse for bass players to be lazy band members, I feel that this might be an instance where this is the root of their lack of committing to the instrument. What are your thoughts? The fuckiest of fucks to you Glenn!
great points, but part of that goes into the creativity of the band, and the music they write. I personally view the bass as the most important piece of the music as its where the heaviness actually comes from. take bass out of a track and its like turning that IPA into a Coors light.
Sadly true. I blame bassists not writing their own parts and guitarists not giving a shit. More often than not, bass today plucks away at the root of the current riff and, well, that's it. I'm fairly sure most bassists could offer a lot more (despite Rule #2), there's just no demand for it. If people listen on their crappy phones to it, you don't get to hear anything from the bass anyway.
RAD/ROMAN Steve Harris also played heavy on the root notes. A lot of times in metal, bassists need to play the role of the rhythm guitar because of what’s necessary in a live setting. However I PREFER to write the bass harmonically interdependent with the guitars where I can but I also think having it match the guitars in certain melodic spots adds so much more depth and heaviness.

Glenn, Im really happy to see how far you’ve come in the last few years. I remember sitting in my bed one night when your first big video came out and I watched it and was laughing the whole time, I checked your channel and not much else was there, now years later you’ve went from a small channel to moving to LA for some awesome experiences. Congrats on the big moves, you’ve earned it!🤘🏼
So, I've always been something of a music hobbyist - I don't want to play live or start a band, but I really love writing and recording 4-8 songs per month in my bedroom and playing all the parts myself. Recently I got a couple college stations to play one of my better songs, so I'm taking things a little more seriously now and trying to learn how to mix. What a dark art! Do I really have to climb the seven mountains, answer every riddle posed by the twelve dwarves, defeat the iron dragon and return with the hound of hell's golden tooth? By which I mean - hey, what do I do about listener fatigue? After about 45 mins of scooping and adjusting levels and augmenting tone I start to question if I still want to live. It's boring, and I often feel like I'm mostly making it worse. Is this just the learning curve (like how I didn't initially enjoy playing guitar when I started because I was awful) or should I just hire professionals to do this for me? Thanks! Have a happy Boxing Day!
Hey Chad, I'm not Glenn but I enjoy doing exactly the same thing as you and used UA-cam to learn to mix. I recommend taking breaks at the beginning every 45 minutes or so, for about 15 minutes each time. I wouldn't spend longer then three of those hour long segments mixing before moving on to something else each day. I realize how limited time can be to play, but I find it's best to record all weekend and mix in bursts throughout the week before and after work. Ear fatigue will destroy your mixes because you'll also either find yourself settling on an inferior mix or becoming hyper critical of your work. Eventually, mixing will take you 15 minutes rather than a few hours because you are generally mixing the same instruments in the same room, so it's fine to work from a preset you've created across channels in a project file and simply tweaking the EQ.
Well, there is a boring part, which is editing to clean things up. That's something you can't avoid doing to some extend and you just want to slugh through it. When mixing I would take frequent breaks and switch between multiple songs, or maybe just sections. Apart from that, a key thing to learn is to start with an idea of what the track should sound like and then instead of asking "am I making this sound better?", which is always tough to answer because there is no clear definition of what constitutes the best sound, you can ask "am I making this sound more like I wanted it to sound?". There's still a learning curve and the more you do this the easier it will be to figure out that the sound you want to get to has a cut of about 2dB around 250Hz. But at least some part of your issues seem to stem from not setting yourself clear enough goals. A good thing to do when taking a break from mixing is to listen to reference. If there's an album you want to get close to soundwise, spend 25 minutes mixing and then listen to a track of that album. Spend another 25 minutes mixing, listen to 2 songs. Go out for a few minutes of fresh air. Then come back to your track.
Glenn, I've been watching the show on the last years and you really helped me a lot to come back to my music. I wish you the best in this new phase. Cheers from a Brazilian in Mexico.
Hey Glenn! What's the best way to get more clients? I have sent messages to tons of bands locally. I've gone to a hand full of shows and talked to artists and gave them my business card. So far, i've worked with 4 bands and about 6-8 solo projects. 2 of those bands i worked with on a couple different projects. But i've talked to at least 5-8 bands in person and messaged probably 30-40 on facebook. 2 of those bands i did end up recording from messaging (i don't get out often unfortunately due to lack of funds and friends lol). I'm trying to get more clients but it's been rough lately. I had a couple months where i was completely booked every weekend and that was my peak. I'm out in the brantford area in Ontario. So it's not the greatest area. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! :) Merry Christmas and fuck you!
OK, some L.A. survival info: #1) Learn a language other than English #2) Have 911 on speed dial. #3) Run, as it takes a cop 2 hours to show...if shots have been fired. #4) Get used to traffic; 10 miles = 4 hours #5) Go back to Canada frequently if you want to talk to a human being with 3 digits in their I.Q., or knows what a 'digit' is. #6) Chain smoke for a couple of weeks 1st & the air will seem fine. Oh, stop by my place and we can crank some Humble Pie & try to wear out a bong...I'm buying :O)
You know, I saw this study that said they canceled each other out...seriously! Since I'm a hopeless coffee addict that started getting custom roasts in '76 I'm with you though! Hey, ever hear a Mesa 180 watt amp full blast? Have any speakers I can melt down? LOL!
Re: 12:52 in your video : The 1987 Dodge Charger (the ugly boxy ones) had a hatch-back version. I used to drive one. When you opened the hatch, the distance from wheel-well to wheel-well, and the distance from the back seat to the back of the car was the ABSOLUTE PERFECT dimensions to place a Marshall 4x12 cabinet. It was like they designed the car around it!
SpectreSoundStudios by the way I love all your videos. I have learned a lot from everything that you have made and dream to be an engineer in the future.
The only thing worse than people who are adamantly about PC culture, are people who are adamantly against it. If someone wants to make their music the way they want, they should, even if they're revisiting old music. The idea of being politically correct is misrepresented as the idea of stopping people from saying what they want, but the actual idea is to just not needlessly say things to hurt people on purpose. Changing songs lyrics to be more acceptable to more people is just an artist trying to expose their music to more people.
Im not even sure buddy is doing it to be PC. Its been so long since that ep came out, hes changed a TON over the years. He might just not personally agree with the things he had written, or his feelings about whoever he was talking about may have changed. It was his choice to re record that ep, and he may have wanted to say some different things within the context of the songs.
I feel like these Viewer's Comments videos are slightly diferent from the ones you did just a year ago. Much more interesting and serious. Love it. Keep it up.
It’s not really being about “politically correct” it’s more about realizing that Buddy isn’t 18 anymore and that overall those lyrics aren’t great and he’d rather have something he’s proud of then something he hates because of what it says. Not everything is about “pc” you try hards
Then I guess I'll never grow up. "Swearing" in metal is a bit like the blood in shooter games. I don't need it, it's not like I can only enjoy a FPS game if I feel like I have to mop the floor after playing because the red juice is dripping from the screen, but if it ain't there, something's missing. It just doesn't feel right. You shoot someone and he just goes and sits in a corner, that feels a bit like playing cowboys and indians as kids. It's less that I have to hear someone scream "fuck" into the mike, it's more that if they try really hard not to, it feels forced and simply artificial. There are great metal songs that don't need any profanity to be absolute gems of the genre (think of everything from the 70s when radio stations wouldn't even bleep stuff that was "improper", they simply and flatly refused to play it altogether), and we have a lot of awesome songs from that time. Later I simply stopped listening to radio because during the 80s, metal started to sound like the radio stations prematurely invented dubstep. And "cleaned up" versions simply sound wrong when you know what it should sound. It smacks of cop-out and appeasement, and, sorry if I let the elitist metal prick hang out here, but THAT'S NOT FUCKING METAL!
@@0x777 You really hit the proverbial nail on the head with that post. BTW...I'm curious about this part: "Later I simply stopped listening to radio because during the 80s, metal started to sound like the radio stations prematurely invented dubstep." Were you referring to the rampant stylistic copycatting commonly practiced by a lot of metal bands at the time, the overall rhythmic feel of the music...or both?
If he wants to be proud of something, i suggest making a new awesome record. What`s done is done. He can try to erase it all he wants, but re-recording it with censorship will not make it better. It will only make things worse.
@@davidyanity I meant that it squeaked, screeched, bleeped and blooped to black out the "bad" words more than dubstep at its worst. But your explanation is spot on, too. The 80s were rife with copycat retort music that certainly didn't do anything to move metal forward.
@DrumWild "Remember that the craziest people on both sides are the ones who get all of the attention." Yea, but the craziest people on the left have a Tumblr blog, while the craziest people on the right are tweeting at 5am from the white house toilet.
Good luck not selling out in LA LA Land. Speaking of which: To answer your poll question: changing your back catalogue to be less offensive is basically selling out to the little Hitlers of the world. They should change their name to The Senseless Fails
Justin Orpecio Yeah. If you're offended by certain words, get the fuck over it. Everyone I know has absolutely no problem with swearing, and my usual name is 'Fucktard.' I never have a problem with it, because I'm a actual person. There's never a day without me being called 'Harley the Fucktard.' (Yes. My name is Harley (Obviously a dude.)) I was born in the South (I live in the Midwest now) and I have Confederate flags in my house, and nobody has any problem with that. When I was young, my siblings picked on me. (Haven't we all experienced that?) I learned they'll never stop calling me names and I learned to ignore them. So, if you're offended for no reason like everyone is, grow the fuck up and learn to ignore. If you know anyone who's offended, teach them how to ignore. Thank you.
Guys, this comment is my response to the question Glenn raised about a band having to revise lyrics to make it "safe" Fuck present day feminism, fuck PC kids, fuck social justice warriors, fuck radical leftists who censor anybody they don't like
Hello Glenn, I started charging the same as the local plumbers and electricians ($125 per hour, and 3 hours minimum) plus any other expenses as needed. It is not just the physical gear, it is also the ability to use the equipment and have the talent to make something that people want to pay for. I know that I work in a very different industry, but this was the advice from a good friend and mentor. Cheers from Minneapolis, Joe from Joe B. Glass
Compared to others, I haven’t been subbed to that long. However in the time I’ve been subbed, I’ve come to love the show. I genuinely hope you find even greater success in L.A.!
12:53. Ouch. I felt that! I can't fit a 4x12 in my BRZ but I can fit a standard 2x12 (like a Marshall 1936 and not just the Mesa compact cab) in the back if I put the (unusable) rear seats down
Newcomer from Berlin here. I don't have a lot of experience yet, but last Sunday the first band in a few years. I had the honour to use my families MD441s and the recording sounded amazing right out of the bat! (Except for the Line6 🙄🙄 - still have the DI which sounds a a few thousand times better) I expected to do it for free, one of the band members is a friend of mine and I was glad I could do it for them as I had another opportunity to get more experienced. After the session when we tidied up the room one if the guys asked "By the way, what do we owe you?" I was totally blown away as I really didn't expect that from a musician after all the bad stories. As you can imagine, this SVC fits perfectly! Thanks Glenn, fuck you!
Congratulations on going to Hollywood. The folks there are very kind and caring and will never rip you off. Don’t forget to give out lots of hugs to strangers ( they love that) cheers for great channel 😎

Welcome to California Glenn, You just made the state better by imo. I hope it meets your expectations, and things go as smooth as possible for you. Hopefully I can run into you at some point and give you the props you deserve.
9:23 I use two bass drums in my band and i *insist* on using two bass drums during recording, because i have them both off-center so that it doesn't sound like a drum machine. It adds certain "groove" to the beat. Then again, we sound like if Kyuss tried to play Black Sabbath so it's kinda specific.
Grats on the move. Strange I kind of saw this coming by the way you spoke in one of your previous videos. I’m hope Cali works out for you, even though that’s one state I am not a fan of, but to each their own.

Friday in my country at least lol
Forgot to schedule it
It's Friday here In Africa. 17:00 to be exact.
what country are you from, Franciois?
@@SpectreSoundStudiosa small country called Namibia.
Merry Christmas and fuck you!
Bravo Glenn. All the best with your new adventure. Been subscribed for a number of years and really enjoy the channel. Cheers from New Brunswick.
Holy shpit!
21:00 Yep, this is a thing that applies to me. Both with performance and with production.
Lol. I'm fine with coffee.
You know, I saw this study that said they canceled each other out...seriously! Since I'm a hopeless coffee addict that started getting custom roasts in '76 I'm with you though! Hey, ever hear a Mesa 180 watt amp full blast? Have any speakers I can melt down? LOL!
Good shit! Congrats on the move and i'm excited for your future!
Get those opportunities man! You deserve it! Carry on glenn!
Edit: f u glenn lol.
I GOT MY COMMENT LIKED WOOT SENPAI NOTICE ME
Re: 12:52 in your video : The 1987 Dodge Charger (the ugly boxy ones) had a hatch-back version. I used to drive one. When you opened the hatch, the distance from wheel-well to wheel-well, and the distance from the back seat to the back of the car was the ABSOLUTE PERFECT dimensions to place a Marshall 4x12 cabinet. It was like they designed the car around it!
It’s Thursday night right now
Jake Maslak ... time zones
Yep. Totally borked the release.
SpectreSoundStudios by the way I love all your videos. I have learned a lot from everything that you have made and dream to be an engineer in the future.
Holy shit Glen! That is HUGE!! congrats on your move here to the states and FY Glen!
Then he should be working on new material he believes in, not desecrating material he's outgrown.
@@0x777
You really hit the proverbial nail on the head with that post.
BTW...I'm curious about this part:
"Later I simply stopped listening to radio because during the 80s, metal started to sound like the radio stations prematurely invented dubstep."
Were you referring to the rampant stylistic copycatting commonly practiced by a lot of metal bands at the time, the overall rhythmic feel of the music...or both?
If he wants to be proud of something, i suggest making a new awesome record. What`s done is done. He can try to erase it all he wants, but re-recording it with censorship will not make it better. It will only make things worse.
@@davidyanity I meant that it squeaked, screeched, bleeped and blooped to black out the "bad" words more than dubstep at its worst. But your explanation is spot on, too. The 80s were rife with copycat retort music that certainly didn't do anything to move metal forward.
Hey Glenn! Super happy that you’ve gotten the chance to move the studio for the states. Good luck, and I’ll be sticking with the channel all the way!
Good luck in Cali Glenn.Don’t let the liberals get to you!Lol
Hahaha i was about to add that to my original comment
#FuckPCCulture
He is a liberal.
He's from Canada. Cali can't show him anything he hasn't already seen.
Flacid House I meant the PC culture liberals
@DrumWild "Remember that the craziest people on both sides are the ones who get all of the attention." Yea, but the craziest people on the left have a Tumblr blog, while the craziest people on the right are tweeting at 5am from the white house toilet.
congratulations!! Im glad to see this show grow like this :)
Good luck not selling out in LA LA Land. Speaking of which: To answer your poll question: changing your back catalogue to be less offensive is basically selling out to the little Hitlers of the world. They should change their name to The Senseless Fails
Congrats Glenn!!! Wow :) Lived in LA for a few months and there sure is a killer buzz there. Have fun!
Screw political correctness
Justin Orpecio Yeah. If you're offended by certain words, get the fuck over it. Everyone I know has absolutely no problem with swearing, and my usual name is 'Fucktard.' I never have a problem with it, because I'm a actual person. There's never a day without me being called 'Harley the Fucktard.' (Yes. My name is Harley (Obviously a dude.))
I was born in the South (I live in the Midwest now) and I have Confederate flags in my house, and nobody has any problem with that. Thank you.
Dude. Have some standards, no matter how desperate you are to get laid!
Guys, this comment is my response to the question Glenn raised about a band having to revise lyrics to make it "safe"
Fuck present day feminism, fuck PC kids, fuck social justice warriors, fuck radical leftists who censor anybody they don't like
Justin Orprecio I agree with that last sentence. They have no use in society and they only make things worse.
Loved this episode, keep it coming!
Right on! Glenn and Warren! What a combo!
You will be a breath of fresh air in LA man! Wishing you every success Glenn.
Wow man! Congrats on the move, best of luck!
That is awesome. Good luck Glenn! I will be watching all the videos
Hello Glenn,
I started charging the same as the local plumbers and electricians ($125 per hour, and 3 hours minimum) plus any other expenses as needed. It is not just the physical gear, it is also the ability to use the equipment and have the talent to make something that people want to pay for. I know that I work in a very different industry, but this was the advice from a good friend and mentor.
Cheers from Minneapolis,
Joe from Joe B. Glass
Congrats! Hope it all goes well... You've worked hard and deserve good things.
Congrats on the move, Glenn! Keep up the good work!
Congratulations man! More than happy for you and i'm so excited looking for videos with you and Warren :)
Good Luck in LA, Glenn!! Rock on!
Compared to others, I haven’t been subbed to that long. However in the time I’ve been subbed, I’ve come to love the show. I genuinely hope you find even greater success in L.A.!
12:53. Ouch. I felt that! I can't fit a 4x12 in my BRZ but I can fit a standard 2x12 (like a Marshall 1936 and not just the Mesa compact cab) in the back if I put the (unusable) rear seats down
Wow man, awesome news! That's a great thing you're doing. Best luck for you.
Congrats Glenn! It takes time and hard work. I'm still working on my best work. Hope I get there some day.
Newcomer from Berlin here.
I don't have a lot of experience yet, but last Sunday the first band in a few years. I had the honour to use my families MD441s and the recording sounded amazing right out of the bat! (Except for the Line6 🙄🙄 - still have the DI which sounds a a few thousand times better)
I expected to do it for free, one of the band members is a friend of mine and I was glad I could do it for them as I had another opportunity to get more experienced.
After the session when we tidied up the room one if the guys asked "By the way, what do we owe you?"
I was totally blown away as I really didn't expect that from a musician after all the bad stories.
As you can imagine, this SVC fits perfectly!
Thanks Glenn, fuck you!
Congrats on the move and welcome to California! (From the San Francisco bay area) Looking forward to more fantastic content!
Great news Glenn. Really, best of luck with the move.
Good luck to you and your studio in the States! Hope you prosper and get to do some awesome work!
This was inspirational Glenn.
Congratulations on going to Hollywood. The folks there are very kind and caring and will never rip you off. Don’t forget to give out lots of hugs to strangers ( they love that) cheers for great channel 😎
Best wishes on the move, Glenn! Happy for you! Hope your wife is cool with that. Keep up the good work! Love the show and haven't missed an episode in 2 years!

Love the new format. Congratulations man that is kick ass. I cant wait to see what comes next!.Guitar is LIF!!!!!
Good luck in the USA, and keep up the great work. Really learning a lot from your videos.
Great to hear you'll be doing more with Warren :) good luck mate
Grats on the move. Strange I kind of saw this coming by the way you spoke in one of your previous videos. I’m hope Cali works out for you, even though that’s one state I am not a fan of, but to each their own.
Love the newer format. Keep it up!
Holy shit, man! That's a great upgrade! California, wow! All the best for you and good luck! :)
