- This is a video I put together showing what a laserdisc is and how you play it. This is recorded from playing on my 110" screen. I picked the original Star wars movie to use as a demo. I did not take clips from the entire movie because I didn't want to get in trouble with UA-cam or Lucas Arts. The actual video image is better than what you see but I had to run my camera at 40fps to prevent bad green and purple banding on the screen. Since it is set at 40fps there is more motion blur than I would prefer. Anyway I hope you enjoy this video. If you like it please subscribe, like, and share!

What i like about laser discs the most is you put it in hit play and there's no ads or menus its just straight to the movie

@@KayoMichiels Ya, in this case, that's what the zoom is for. I have a buddy who will always run it on "stretch" or "fill". He doesn't care how distorted it gets, just as long as he thinks it "fills the screen", lol.

It's a shame that good old goldens days of collecting VHS, Laserdisc, DVD & Blurays are ruined by Netflix and streaming services. Yes it's easy to stream videos and watch but nothing can replace the joy of using physical media. I love to own movies rather than just watch and forget. Please keep your collection and do not donate or throw away. I really miss Laserdisc format because I was too young and was never able to buy the player and discs but I do own thousands of DVDs and now due to space issues I will be throwing away the DVD cases and artwork but still holding on DVDs by themselves and ripping into ISO format into my HDD.

I agree. Playing your own media when you want is better. No connectivity issues. Over the years I have collected more VHS tapes, HD-DVD’s, DVD’s & BluRays.

But as of recent, streaming services are removing content. So, that does that mean physical media sales will shoot up because of that? (One major advantage: preservation if taken care of properly) If streaming services continue to dispose content, DVD sales are sure to go up. You’d think they’d have it on forever but no. (Mockingly) Too costly. (I heard HBO Max removed Looney Tunes, expecting DVD sales to go up because of that) Does that mean physical media wins in the end or is it all just pointless wars that never seem to end over physical/digital vs. streaming content?
Also, these news reports of physical media dying is bullshit, they’re just fear mongers who love pissing off DVD collectors and want nothing more to get attention by pissing you off.

A VHS tape will only max out at 240i, but it gets upconverted to 480i when it gets transmitted to the TV.

Living in Australia laserdisc never really took off, but I was a fan and amassed a huge collection. Back then I had to import them, and I would buy a movie around the same time it would hit theatres over here, I was a very popular boy, had ton of friends come around to watch all these new releases. Miss those days and miss laserdisc. Was a fun format to collect.
You could always start a new laserdisc collection 🙂 The prices of used discs have come down considerably. Most of mine I have purchased for between $2 and $8 each. Some places will let you buy them in bulk at a low price. I bought 50 discs from a store awhile back for $65. There were lots of Criterion and some other rare ones in the mix 😊

Well, I consider myself one of the lucky ones, to fully appreciate this format. I found a Panasonic Laserdisc player at a local charity shop several years ago. It cost $60AU, and it could play NTSC discs. This was perfect for me, given the discs it played were the best from America and Japan. I did not have the money on me to pay for it. So I waited a couple of weeks to get everything set up. I called the shop earlier, and they said they sold it. But a gut instinct told me to still get the money ready.
When I next arrived at that particular charity shop, I discovered that they still had that player available. Seizing that opportunity, I purchased it and brought it home. It was lacking the remote control, but I went ahead and tracked down one. The initial find of a compatible remote was short lived, given the seller on eBay sold it to another Australian customer. But however, with a little thought, I figured that one for another similar model would work the same on the player. I got the remote, and to my shock, it worked perfectly, despite being for another player.
I've been collecting Laserdiscs over the course of the past decade or so, and I have gleamed great enjoyment into this underrated format. The fact you can freezeframe footage, and read still frame indexes showing how the films were made, have made my appreciation of the discs all the more better. And why not? It's something worth easily accessible, and I take great joy into using it. The fact that a 30 yr old player still works great, is all the more better for it. As they say, one man's trash is another man's treasure! 😁😁😁

Paul Kepner I remember that it was my mothers brother that introduced me with the LD format. Some of the first films i saw with him was Speed, Jurassic Park and The Mask during the 90's. (i was a kid back then) I think it was the DTS versions. I also remember that the sound was more punchier in a way. It was way more cinematic. :)

@@rabarebra I do not agree, the sound is not compressed, so the disc has that large size, the quality can be verified in the laserdisc of recitals, as a collector I tell you that I have the same shows in different formats such as dvd and bluray and the difference is abysmal ..... As for the image quality varies according to the editions, there are mastered films and other lasers of Japanese origin that do not differ from a current hd ...

Sell them on eBay at affordable prices. There are many people willing to buy them. And based on what I've been able to find on eBay, most are in rather excellent condition too. Some look brand new and some others are still shrink wrapped.
Great advice. I save a couple of LP for the trash bin. My neighbor throwing them for be old I guess. I was more aware in that time I will rescue more.

Incredible the fact that the laserdisk, created in the 70's, has a higher image resolution than the DVD, created in the late 90's!
DVDs are higher resolution than Laser Disc. DVDs have 480 lines, LaserDisc has just 425 lines. There was another later version of LaserDisc called Hi-Vision, but there were only like 30 some movies ever made for it,and it was actually the first high definition system ever, but it failed. The Hi-Vision disc today are like $500 minimum, and you need a Hi-Vision player,which are also expensive. You can play normal LaserDisc on Hi-Vidion players, and people claim they play normal LaserDisc better, but they do not. Nonetheless, DVDs have higher resolution, and most LaserDisc have less than 425 lines, and some even get down around VHS quality, which is 240 lines. All DVDs have at least 480 lines, because PAL DVDs have 576 lines.
laser disc is pure analog picture. no compression or artifacts. I have 16 different formats of episode IV but my 77 release in MONO is still my favorite. exactly as I watched it in the theater opening night as a 7 year old

I still remember the first time I saw Star Wars on laserdisc, it was magical. For me laserdiscs have an unique sound that even today’s Dolby Atmos movies on Blu-ray don’t have. I’m not saying it sounds better but it really transmit you true theater vibe sound like no other format.
i love that they added a THX Cimarron spot on the Special Edition LDs. I have to get my Sony LD cleaned up and working. you motivate me!
I dont believe I have seen a Sony LD player. I have seen loads of Pioneer and Mitsubishi players

Great demonstration! I only have 2 LaserDisc memories. Fleetwood Mac LaserDisc playing in a top lid player at the mall. I knew of the format, and opening the record player-size lid and seeing that the picture and sound came off that nice shiny disc. And the best was I saw the first High Definition 1080 Sony TV, only 2 existed, in the mid-1980's. It was driven by a hand-built LaserDisc player! It had stunning clips of footage like biking down a street in the fall. Every vein in every colorful leaf was visible, like looking out an open window. When High Def sets were actually affordable, twenty years later, the compression pixelation is horrible, but even at its "wow" best I wouldn't say "like looking out an open window". Seems there answer to that problem is 4K sets, and so on.
I remember the first time I watched Star Wars. I think it was around 1997-1998. My parents rented Star Wars: ANH and ESB laserdiscs and we watched it with the family. I was captivated at first sight by the Stormtroopers when they stormed Tantive IV. It was a good time :')
I remember watching it in the Ambassador cinema in Dublin in 1977. My dad was an army sergeant and picked me up from school for a matinee.

Nice set up. I Hired a Laserdisc player back In the Day. Pre-VHS there was this Little shop doing Washing Machines and Cookers things like that. And It had Little room at the back there was a Stack of Phillips Laserdisc players (The Ones You load like a Record Player) nothing fancy like Yours. You hooked up the sound to a Hi Fi amp and It was just a Coax Cable to CRT TV 28". The player was £10 for the Night and films were £0.85p to rent. We watched Jaws, Quadraphonia, Superman things like that. Was great to see a Cinema Picture In Your own Home. i did the same as You recently I hooked up My Sony C7 Beta-Max to the Projector and sat My Kids down to watch the Whole of Live Aid and they loved It. Thanks for the Demo.
I uncle was the one that got me started with the love of laserdisc. He bought one of the first Pioneer players and had it running to the projection TV. He had the audio from the laserdisc player running to his Pioneer surround sound system. The image and sound was amazing at the time! I fell in love with it. Fortunately as I got older laserdiscs got cheaper and so did the players 🙂

I first saw a LaserDisc player, in 1981, in Glasgow, Scotland, demonstrating at a well known electrical retailer. The picture was nice and clear. The movie it was playing was Close Encounters of the Third Kind. No one was even interested in it, except me. I thought it was magical and very futuristic.
I'm glad I have the original trilogy on Laserdisc....screw the ones that Lucas turned into shit.

No, it's not the original unaltered version but that was on actual dvd. This laserdisc set is the best home video release of the 1997 theatrical re-release. The dvd in 2004 had more changes and one of the worst color timing jobs of any new video master.
That being said there was apparently a PAL broadcast 16x9 enhanced of the 1997 versions floating around which is the best known way to watch this version.

Great vid, man. Funny how an old piece of tech can bubble up such warm fuzzies. My friend Marty was the only person I knew who had one of these back in the day, and I used to drool over his Superman Trilogy Set on LD.
tripshaker The person responsible for getting me addicted to laserdisc was my uncle. I remember when they first came out. He invited us over to his house to watch a movie and I was amazed when he pulled that shiny disc out and then the way the movie looked. Just amazing for the time!
I've always had a passion for tape decks! I really like audio equipment, and today I also really admire receivers from the 80s, I have the L D pioneer.
I started making my recordings in the second half of the 80s.
To this day I make recordings, listen to my vinyl records and watch my LASER DISCs, I continue to value this experience of enjoying quality sound, a unique experience...
Sometimes I remember the good times, a journey through TIME...
It's a shame there aren't more technicians who do maintenance around here...

Even though it is far more convenient having every movie available digitally online it is just more special to watch a movie on physical media. More of an experience if that makes any sense. Especially when it is a on a unique format like Laserdisc. I bought my first Laserdisc around 2003. At that time many DVDs were still fairly expensive and Laserdiscs and players were dirt cheap because nobody wanted them at the time. I purchased so many great movies and they were only around $5 a piece. I can specifically remember the Beverly Hills Cop box set of all 3 movies being $60+ on DVD so I got them on Laserdisc for only about $15! I ended up with around 50 movies or so on LD and I watched every single one. It was a really fun summer that year. Hanging out and watching awesome 80s and 90s movies on Laserdisc.

Sadly, I've never owned a laserdisc player, but I wanted to, because for a time, it was the only way to get widescreen versions of many films. VHS eventually started releasing widescreen versions of movies as a novelty, and then eventually branched out to where there was actually an option to get either widescreen or pan and scan versions of movies on that format, but the picture quality, I'm sure was *nothing* like on a laserdisc. When it comes to Star Wars, I love both the original and special editions of the OT, and I was fortunate enough to buy the DVD set of movies that included both the special editions and original '77, '80, and '83 releases of ANH, TESB, and ROTJ. Sadly, that will likely be the last time we'll ever get to the films in their original versions on any home video format.
That is very cool about your DVD set! If you ever decide to get into laserdiscs this is a great time. The players are fairly cheap and so are the discs.
i'm the same...and am from the Star Wars generation and will take a first ever dive into laser discs even though i'm regularly watching 4k blu ray on my $10k home theater system (never had netflix)
Good old laser disc. I spend millions on the format I had the best of the best with pioneer Elite players with DTS AC-3 decoders, it’s just a different time.
I used to have the Japanese "Special Collection" versions. They were the first Laserdiscs I ever bought. "Jedi" even included a demonstration about the differences between letterbox and pan-and-scan.
I'm gradually starting to rebuild my collection now since the majority of it and my player were damaged when I moved a couple years back. Most of what I had were Japanese special editions, demo quality titles like the widescreen "Top Gun" remaster and music videos, but I'm going to start adding DTS titles to the mix.

Looks pretty fantastic. Do you have anything in between the LD player and the projector that might be providing a better deinterlace and upscale? Those starship engines and lightsabers really pop.

In your short demonstration of the picture, at least 2 changes from the original theatrical release are the Episode IV added at the start of the crawl text, and the hover-car Land Speeder shadow is updated.

You always have to put it back on the shelf after watching it.
I never leave a laserdisc in the player after watching one. Leaving a disc in the player till next time is a bad habit to get into. It can warp the discs.

What I meant was that after watching the movie you put the disc back into the case and then put it back on the shelf, don't leave it out on the table.
I often leave the Blu-Ray disc in the player when I don't finish watching the movie in one sitting, and continue the next day where I left off.
@@lukeskywalker6809 the laserdiscs can warp much like records can. That's why it is a bad idea to leave them leaning at an angle instead of straight up. Most laserdisc players support the disc from the outer edges. If you leave the disc in there for extended periods there is a potential for the disc to bow inwards in the center. Then it would throw off the entire focus of the laser.

What is the quality?
To everyone complaining about him using the Special Editions, believe it or not some people prefer those. Just because you happen to dislike them doesn't mean no-one else should be allowed to like them.
HowlingSnail I can't speak for everyone else, but for me there really isn't any hate for people who like the special editions. Heck, anyone who loves the original trilogy over the prequels are ok in my book. What I can't stand is the fact that, according to George Lucas, the original theatrical versions never existed. Making the movies, and the character arcs as portrayed in the originals, seem wrong in the eyes of their creator. He made it seem like we were all incorrect for liking the movies the way they were. That's the reason I find the special editions so offensive. I probably wouldn't have a problem with them if they still released the originals. I would just chose to watch the originals.
kurtemeigh Oh I'm totally in agreement that you should be able to access either version if you want. But at the same time I think the amount of hate geared towards the Special Editions (And the prequels, but that's another discussion entirely) is woefully over-the-top. The base film is the same, it's just been tweaked in certain areas.
HowlingSnail well I agree that the core films are very similar, The Empire Strikes Back is ultimately the same, however, the cantina scene does change who Han Solo originally was. Since that changes his core character, that changes the way he is perceived throughout the rest of the film. His decision to come back at the end of the movie is not as impactful as it would be had he been this guy who just doesn't care who he kills, or a person who just cares about paying money back to save his own head.
HowlingSnail I believe the reason people complain is that many of us have been forced to buy LD players just to get a decent version of the theatrical films.
@@kurtemeigh. Exactly, George Lucas was just like Steve Jobs, standing on all the other creators balls, and taking all the credit. I'm glad that he doesn't own the franchise anymore, not that I like what disney is doing with it, but just glad that he doesn't own it anymore. Maybe one day somebody will do the right thing with it!

the picture quality is actually really good... but since the 4Kbluray came out it ruined all things for me but this and the sound is amazing
It would probably sound better if his player had AC-3 support and a demodulator attached to it. From what people tell me who've owned an AC-3 decoder, laserdisc had much better dynamic range than DVDs did with Dolby Digital. Unfortunately, the laserdisc people making the standard had to keep the analog channel so they put it as an RF channel instead..... :/ I assume Pioneer had something to do with that..... :/
@@LaurenGlenn The thing is at the time Pioneer & Dolby Labs decided to make the laserdisc compatible with Dolby Digital, not many people were equipped with amplifiers able to decode the signal and the studios didn't want to lose the compatibility with standard equipment.
So in the end, Dolby Labs and Pioneer decided to leave untouched the Digital PCM Stereo/Surround track instead of replacing it with dolby digital signal which would have forced people with older amps to replace them with AC3 compatible gear (super expensive at the time in early 90s) in order to be able to listen to the movie sound the digital way.
Hence the decision to use one of the two analog tracks available on NTSC laserdiscs (the right one, leaving the left one for either a mono version of the movie soundtrack or an alternate language version) to fit the Dolby Digital signal in the form of an analog RF signal that could be fed to compatible receivers which would then decode it using an RF demodulator (internal or external) to get the 5.1 (discrete) Dolby Digital signal.
So all in all, the decision made to put the DD signal in the form of an analog RF signal was to maximize the compatibility of the media with the variety of audio equipments existing on the market.
And that explains also why there is no PAL laserdisc with Dolby Digital Audio as far as the PAL discs had no analog tracks (they needed the space to fit the higher video resolution used by PAL composite signals, 576 interlaced lines instead of 480 on NTSC discs).
DTS on the contrary decided to go a different route when they decided to release DTS compatible laserdiscs and replaced the digital PCM content with their own proprietary digital DTS track making the Digital audio of those discs unreadable on non-DTS amps (that explains why it was mostly a failure and why DTS discs were outsold by their Dolby Digital counterpart at the time :=))

Thanks. I had to play around with the settings a bit to make it look good. Laserdisc look awesome on a CRT projector but on a digital one it takes some fine tuning because the projector can make the image look over pixelated.

So is there more warmth and depth to laser disc than dvd or does it just depend all on how the film is transfered to either? Just wondering because a lot of people always say records for some strange reason sound better than cds which makes no sense.
Nice. I used to have the original ones too. But back when DVD tool over I traded a ton of my lasers for DVD. I wish I hadn't I got rid of around 125 lasers for probably 30 DVD back in 2000. My favorite one I got rid of was my criterion edition of Halloween 1978. That one had four discs. And commentary and other neat extras.
I have a question I’m in the looks for a laserdisc player right now. I have a set up plan and looked at many laserdisc players but it’s the projector I’m having a problem with. what is the best type of projector or what is the model you use. Could you guide me some information about what type of projector can work with laserdisc players
I use a device called a "line doubler," which is an analog picture processor. This greatly enhances picture quality on big displays. I have a DLP Viewsonic 3d projector, and it's pretty smooth. I recommend a projector with at least 3,000 lumens for good contrast and color. Regarding a line-doubler; Faroudja made the best ones, and you should be able to get a decent one on ebay for a decent price.
whats the difference in 85mm vs 50 mm ? Are using them to stretch the format coming out of the projector lense?
Did you use the zoom in function to let the side borders fill the video.. or did you just stretch out the video to fullscreen? I'm asking this because the output video is made for 4:3 displays..
I had the projector set for 16:9 aspect ratio and that's why it looks a little overly stretched.
That's a 4:3 image stretched to 16:9 ratio. Surprised someone with a projector and Laserdisc player tolerates that.

You should have picked up the THX remastered LD's that came out in '95 - they were the *original* versions, where Han shot first.....
Han shot first, Greedo shot first... what does it matter? Either way, Greedo was shot dead in the end!
What matters is the *truth*. Everyone who saw Star Wars (ep IV) in the theaters before 1997 saw Han shoot first; Lucas then decided to *change history* by making Greedo shoot first in the new edition Ep IV. As fans we need to stand up and say that changing things like this in older films is unacceptable.

My dad had a Panasonic laser disc and my little sister put two laser discs at the same time and broke it 😂. The old man was not pleased paying to have it fixed. How else was he going to karaoke without his laser disc player 🤣

Samuel Oliver There ar ea slew of excellent discs that you could pickup. I have bought most of mine for less than $5 at local used book stores that carry movies. You can look on craigslist and find them for $2 or less. You can find Terminator 1 and 2, Alien and Aliens, Indiana Jones, E.T., and tons more. The movies available on laserdisc seem to be endless :)
I still own a collector's edition, albeit slightly water damaged. Now to find a laser disc player lol. When I did watch it years ago...you could actually see the transparent tape used on some special effects scenes. Love to be able to digitize it to an MKV file now. :/
You could always use a composite to USB video capture device. They are pretty cheap, under $30, and they will record up to 720p I believe if they have a component input along with the other inputs.
Watching him manipulate the LaserDisc and the player felt kind of like watching a 'Jack Torrance' video !

That’s Excellent ! I have a similar setup with a Mitsubishi projector - the disc’s are fun and tactile and the machine is a collection of mechanical sounds. It’s a very analog experience, yet still using digital technologies and that’s something millennials could never understand.

They're not anamorphic, but they are letterboxed. The Special Edition Star Wars looks like it is a widescreen image, anyway, but your projector is stretching the aspect ratio. My eyes tell me this is so.
hmm. Ok, let me try again. I believe your projector is stretching the native aspect ratio of the laserdisc, which as you clearly are aware, should appear as a square 4:3 box. To take an already butchered 4:3 pan/scanned image and stretch it to fill a larger space seems pretty wacky to me, not "normal."

To view a non-anamorphic source like a Widescreen laserdisc that has NOT been enhanced for 16x9, you should ZOOM but not STRETCH. Stretching will distort the image even further than pan and scan has already done.

I just recently got the urge to set up a home theater again, so I am doing so. This will be the first movie I watch! On my Pioneer Elite player that I got in Goodwill for I think $15.
$15 is a steal especially for an elite player!

Laserdisc on a projector is probably the absolute best way to watch them these days. How are you getting such high quality blacks from a projector tho?
