  • It took us more than 6 months to build the battery 2.0 and the PowerWall. And sometimes it almost felt like the project would never end, would never be finished!
    Similar to the Seplos battery system, I want to show you an alternative to such long lasting projects, still DIY but not as hardcore as the battery shelf where we had to design and built everything from scratch.
    I want to introduce the Victron LYNX bus bar system which we will use to build our new PowerWall 2.1. It is a great system which is actually not that expensive considering it has the same functionality as your battery shelf top compartment with all the DC distribution.

    Only 2.4 Amps going in here on the Adelaide Plains at the moment.
    I read an article this morning that Qld. has the highest % of rooftop panels in Australia.
    I am now firmly convinced that you Qlders are soaking up all the sun before it can get to us.
    I will have to run a cable from my place to yours just to get some input.

    I have started my solar journey, I spent the last few weeks watching every one of your videos, well you and Will Prouse, I like the detail you go into with examples and your trial and error, keep the videos coming, you have another fan on the opposite side of the globe. P.S. I am currently running my office PC and lights on a 600watt array with 12v 100ah lifepo4 battery and 1500 watt inverter, and an auto transfer switch :)

      I'm using a similar setup for my computer but have to carry the battery back and forth between house and garage to swap it with one that was charged from solar. Saves me 1kWh/day.

    You are during the right thing now. I also like the compact design from victron Lynx system, and I use it myself in my system. I only see benefits of using this. I also upgraded the Power In with additional fuses.

    This is exactly what I intend to use as it is a very nice and compact solution. The only problem I had was that it's usually nice to be able to disconnect all the batteries with one breaker, which didn't seem to be easy to do with the Victron busbar until ... I found what I think is a good solution! The Lynx Shunt has a place to put a fuse between the two sides of the bus but in fact this fuse is not very useful... So what you can do is connect two cables on each side of the fuse and connect them to a main battery breaker and voila! The only problem is that the Lynx shunt cover wasn't designed for this, so you may have to make an opening in the shunt cover or maybe the wires can be routed through the "distributor" or "power in" if there is enough space?

      Yeah, I had a look at this solution, and it would be possible to modify the shunt to mount a breaker somehow. It gets messy quickly though. A 300A breaker for example is not small and it does only disconnect the positive bus bar. In many regulations it is necessary to disconnect both pos and neg of the battery. So, a breaker between the shunt and the Power In module would be feasible... but the installation gets larger and defeats the purpose.

    Nice 2.1. On your lynx without the lights, put some led/resistor in parallel with the fuse. When the fuse blows the led will light. Drill a small hole in the cover.

    You can have LEDs on the power inn too.
    You need a board the size of the missing one, 4 LEDs, 4 resistors and some wiring... Run the cable from one end of the fuse, trough the resistor, trough the led, and back to the other end of the fuse.
    If the fuse breaks, the power goes trough the led, but redused by the resistor...

    There’s a mod you can do to the distributor that involves connecting a ground to one of the pins in the RJ11 port to make the LEDs work on the fuses without the bms controlling them. You might Google it.
    Also I think those bars are tin plated copper bus bars not steel….

      Yeah, sow this teak as well but the short cable is included so why not plug it in and have it activated. Unless you only use the Distributor alone for any reason...

      @@OffGridGarageAustralia I thought you said you can’t use the electronics without the victron BMS? What I was suggesting was a way to still use the LEDs for fuse indicators even though you didn’t have the victron BMS. Or maybe I misunderstood. My wife tells me that it’s possible, so… 🤷🏻‍♂️😊

      @@OffGridGarageAustralia Yes actually you can connect the Lynx Shunt to the Lynx Distributor with the provided RJ10 to RJ10 cable. It will provide power to the distributor as well as transmit the Distributor information to the Cerbo GX

      @@DrCoolZic no, the lynx Shunt VE.can is unable to provide the fuse information from the Distributors to the GX device. That had been confirmed in the Victron fortune. Or also show by (kind of) by the latest firmware of the Shunt being a year+ older than the release of the Lynx Distributors.

    Yet another excellent and informative video. Thank you very much Andy. Can you tell me if the blue cases of any/all of the Lynx products can be re-attached "upside down" to support a DC bus that runs right to left? I appreciate some internal re-arrangement might be needed.

      Yes you can. They are even provided with a sticker for the cover you can use in that case. You can also switch all small wires from one side to the other as well. That works and you have the benefit of nu dust falling in.

      Can anyone confirm whether the Lynx Shunt also be turned upside-down so the DC bus runs from battery on the right to load/MPPT solar charger feed in on the left? It looks like not reading the Victron documentation.

      The only problem is the cable connections would be from the top then.

    You could easily add your own indicator to your non-peter by adding a red LED (with anode to the positive bar) in series with a resistor (10KOhms/0,25W for 48V = 5 mA) in parallel to the fuse. It will light up, when a load ist connected and the fuse is blown. If you use two leds in anti-parallel connection, it will work for loads and sources, if you only have a single power source. With multiple sources, it will not work for the sources, only for loads, because the voltage difference between your sources will not be high enough to light up the LEDs.

      Yes, that would work if want an indicator for the fuses. I found the PCB in the Distributor a bit over the top. It has a lot of chips for such a basic function.

      @@OffGridGarageAustralia Yes, the electronics is a bit over the top, but you need something to connect to the bus, a power supply and a dection that works with a broad range of voltages. I would be interested, if it can detect also the blown fuses, if it is used as a "fused power-in" (I believe, it doesn't). This would be much harder than with a power-out (VBat drops to 0 with a blown fuse with out), since you would need to detect very small voltage differences between two batteries (almost no drop between the bar and the disconnected power-in).

    There is some controversy even on the Victron Community forum if these bus bars should really be rated for 1000A without generating a lot of heat since the cross section of the bus bar is only 8mm by 30mm. Even Victron's 600A busbar is considerably thicker than this.

      Yeah, I can understand the discussion. But 1000A is also a lot, right?! Even in a 12V system, it's a lot of power and probably OK for peak/surge power even it says constant 1kA somewhere.

    Hello. one question. How did you set up the Shunt i the app or Cerbo GX? Mine is not appearing in the Cerbo GX so I cannot have access to the current in/out parameter
    I have the shunt connected to the servo GX with their two terminators, and a touch display connected to the Cerbo GX

    You can invert the direction of the smart shunt by switching all the small wires in it from right side of the shunt/fuse to the left side and vice versa.

      @@OffGridGarageAustralia not officially supported, but it definitely works. Two are power supply to the board, three are for voltage (+/-) and current (actually: voltage across shunt) sensing, with one shared wire. Switching all around puts them at the places they are designed to be in, just on opposite sides relative to the shunt, turning the design, effectively, upside down.

    If by chance these new Victron toys was not available to you at the time that you actually designed the first power center, and built it, I think they took your ideas and made up the new equipment. And You should get some royalty for your inadvertently push to Victron to make this new equipment. Don't ya think.

    I love the Victron Bus bar. I have been using this setup for about 6 months now and haven't had any issues. My only complaint is that you can't monitor the fuses with the "Lynx Shunt VE.Can" and the function requires the "Lynx Smart BMS". Since the VE Shunt can connect to the Lynx Distributor I am hoping it's a firmware upgrade in the future.

      IIUC, the shunt VE.can simply doesn't have the electronics to talk to the distributors. Also I found a post in the victim forums that hinted at a new shunt that could talk to them. Still a pity that they haven't done this already after years of having the distributors.

    Hi, Andy - great video but two questions: why bother with Peter if you could sell it and get another Lynx PowerIn 1000 - just because it was on hand? Q2: what is the total cost of what you showed? I’m sure cheaper than doing a lot of work on top of materials and space is always worth something, too as is Mfgr warranty and testing of their item. We all like watching you do a lot of work while we sit about with beers, but that doesn’t mean it is always a good enough reason to make everything. We can watch you do more useful work, too. 😊

      Thanks Tom, Whan I bought the devices a few months back, I didn't know the difference and just bought what is available to show it here on the channel.     Have you looked at the Seplos JASSN Busbar? It is enclosed, includes breakers, and looks like the Seplos batteries.

    I wonder if you need a seperate shunt if using the Seplos BMS. The Seplos BMS have a shunt included, so why not use these? The sum of the both shunts from the both Seplos BMSes should be the same as the Victron shunt will measure, right?

      We can use either the Seplos BMS as a shunt or the Victron Lynx Shunt. Both will not work at the same time. In the Victron system, you can nominate which of the two is your battery monitor.

      The Shunt itself yes, but the Distributor does not connect through the Shunt and gives you the status of the fuses online. That only works when the Distributor is connected to the Smart BMS. Don't know why that is, it should work with both...

    Would really be nice if there was a clean way to disconnect a battery using that Lynx distributor. That switch you mentioned adding to perform that function I don't think is rated for disconnecting a battery when under load whereas your Noark breakers are.

      Yes, that is correct. The switch is not for emergency purposes but only for maintenance to turn off a battery. I'm sure it will still work under load as well. The Seplos batteries I want to connect won't supply more than 100A each at max power (it's rather 30-50A max under normal conditions).
      The Noark would be the preferred safety switch for this purpose.

    Now for a question about fuses. Any concerns about using much-less-costly automotive fuses in these Lynx boxes? I am thinking 1 x 300A 80V DC in the shunt for the main positive feed from 2 x 150A combined Seplos 280Ah battery banks and 4 x 50A for the four feeds from each of my four Victron MPPT 48V 150/35 solar charge controllers)? regards to all from Northumberland

      You can't use those automotive fuses. The important difference is the current interrupt capability. With LiFePO4 batteries you can get extremely high current from a short circuit and those automotive fuses would weld together and not actually cut the power.

      @@davidb.5544 Indeed, the Lynx shunt takes a CNN fuse (2,500A interrupt rating? 5,000A?), and the Lynx Distributor/Peter takes MEGA fuses (interrupt rating looks to be in the range of 2,500A). Also the fuses within the Seplos battery packs (Zeeman ANMH, 2,000A interrupt rating, I think) are not optimal. I guess the combination of the Lynx system with MCCBs on the inputs and outputs would provide a good level of protection.

      Thank you Max. I just realised that I never send my address to you 🤦‍♂️ I'll do this tonight...
      With these fuses, it is important to use the right voltage to interrupt the arc if a fault occurs. So using 80V fuses seems to be correct.
      As with the other comments, this is not optimal but still sufficient, I guess. I would rather use a T-Classe fuse here or even better a dual DC circuit breaker. Both have 20-25kA breaking capacity.

      I don't think they will fit. It would be great if they change the design to a T-Class fuse. That would be much safer to use then a CNN fuse.

    Oh this time a long promotional event for Victron Lynx system...not bad for sure but the price??? The tip with the additional screws was good, even if the "power-in" is still too expensive for me.

      Except the relay... not that I can see anything else... oh, it has 1000A, the smart shunt comes in two versions, 500A or 1000A.

      I just saw a tear down by Will Prowse of a CHINS so-called solid state LifePo4 battery and a puncture test he did on this Blade type cell, it resulted in a catastrophic runaway, worth a look, the next puncture test was on another LifePo4 pouch cell (Not the so-called solid state type) which did not vent very much at all given he drilled it through 9 times

      I had a look at the blade batteries but the formfactor alone is not worth the hassle in my opinion. We would start another big DIY project just for housing them correctly.

    Hiya, Andy! I’m working on a battery project for our sailboat. Using reclaimed Tesla battery modules. Excited to use them, because they are made from high-quality Tesla spec cells. And they are taken from wrecked Tesla vehicles. Which would mean if we don’t use them, they would go into the dump. I’m a Tesla car owner like you. Why don’t you consider using Tesla modules for your power wall 2.1? SimpBMS talks to Tesla module slave balancing boards. And also integrates into the Victron Eco system.

      @Walther Stech they won’t go into a landfill if you resell them - lots of people are looking for good Tesla modules to buy. Use the money to go LFP because of fire risk especially on a boat! There is no magic sauce to Tesla vs. other Li-ion, none of which is good for a boat IMHO but good luck regardless.

      @@tomkacandes8286 Tesla packs can sustain 250A charge / discharge (with cooling) per 5.3kWh module. My use case on the boat is a joke load to them. Don’t even get warm. Their magic is in the extremely hight specs cells are made to. They are very uniform cells. After multiple cycles without balancing (i know. Not ideal) all 444 cells (times 2 modules i use in series) are within 0.02V Not too shabby! Lithium on my boat is within my risk tolerance. As well as that of my insurance company. So we’re fine there. And Li-Ion are also 20-30% lighter then LFP. Which is a very important factor on a sailboat.

    Andy the Lynx shunt 1000 is 605 dollars Australian each. Bit to much for me mate. It would cost 300 max to build one, that is with profit on it.

    The relay on the shunt can actually only act based on the system battery voltage, not SoC. At least mine can't. Also there's no option for hot water/surplus load, it's intended to be used as a generator start/stop or you can also turn on the relay remotely.

      Ah, right, I had mixed information as I had read about SOC trigger as well. Voltage seems to be OK, I guess. So it is the same relay function as in the MPPTs.

      It's heavy, so this is proper tinned copper bus bar they are using. The plastic seems decent as well and does not look as cheap as many other products I have seen.

      The bus bar is solid copper, not Aluminium and it's made in India (at least the things sold in Europe).
      Do they make a healthy profit? Sure. But the case is certainly more expensive than $0.70 (injection moulded, fiber reinforced).
