How to Use a Stencil and Spray Paint Over an Acrylic Pour Painting

- Sometimes, our paintings don't come out quite like we hope. Not terrible, but not awesome. If you have an amazing talent you can paint designs or images on top of the poured backgrounds and I am constantly blown away by the talent we see in our facebook group. I don't have this talent so I've been working on a few ideas for how to use poured backgrounds.
In this one, I'm taking an old painting and just quickly testing out an idea. I'll be using a stencil and some black spray paint I have hanging around and just seeing what that might look like. I'd suggest you give this a bit more thought and planning than me and get a nicer stencil. Maybe a mandala pattern, something that would fit better onto the size and shape of your painting. I only had a choice of one stencil in my local art section, but there are some awesome ones that would look cool. Check out some that have lettering or mottos or seasonal slogans. Or trees and other organic shapes you can easily add without painting them by hand.

I really love this experiment. I love the broken edges as it adds a character to this painting. Thanks for sharing Deby!
I do love experimenting. I feel like a nutty professor sometimes. Best wishes for 2018.
I rather like the fuzzy edges. It makes it feel like it belongs with the pour. Great idea. I have several I can do that on. Happy New Year
Thank you Debbie. Best wishes to you for 2018.
Stencil tape is your friend. But, other than the fuzzy edges, it looks fabulous. Thanks for posting your experiments. I hope you're feeling better soon.
I always love experimenting. My health seems to be going the right way. Best wishes for 2018.
I think it's great and the fuzzy edges add character. I am not sure you remember me, I've been a fan for a long time...
I was not sure about the black when.you brought it out but loved the outcome. Your pour colors look amazing behind the stencil. Thank you for the great idea. Happy New Year, wishing you good health and much happiness.
Thanks Christine. Best wishes to you for 2018.
It looks cute! Wonderful idea for those paintings you don't really care for!
Thanks Paula. Best wishes for 2018.
It's too cute! I love it.
Happy New Year Deby. May all your pours be blessed with gentle breezes! Love your videos.
Thanks again Dionannan. Best wishes for 2018.
Great job! I have been using contact paper to create custom designs. You can use the negative or positive cut out shape depending on what kind of design/look you are going for, and it helps with crisp edges as well! Thanks for always sharing!
Thanks for your comments Zeak. I'm always happy to share and best wishes for 2018.
I really enjoy watching you, Happy New Year!
Thank you. Best wishes for 2018.
Great idea looks great ! And the fact that you were able to go outside and spray is impressive ! I'm in Canada lol !
Thanks Kim. Best wishes for 2018.
Thank you ! You as well 😁
Lol tell me about it.
If only we could get some fricken sun here in Canada,I could get so many paint projects finished lol. Some stuff I hate doing indoors, like spraying
Great idea! I have a few stencils I can try. Thank you, Debbie - and Happy New Year!
Thank you Gayle. Best wishes to you for 2018.
This is a great idea! Think I will try it today, enjoy your New Year
Thank you Justin. Best wishes for 2018.
Great suggestion Deby! I do this and results can be stunning. Yes a removable spray adhesive/quilters removable adhesive is perfect so one does not get bleed under or ghosting. Ghosting can be an interesting 3-d happy accident sometimes too if not sprayed too heavy.
Thanks for your observations and thoughts. Best wishes for 2018.
Great Idea! I love it. Happy and healthy New Year! 💙
Thanks Barbara. Best wishes to you for 2018.
What a cool idea! Thanx😊
Cheers Jeannie. Best wishes for 2018.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!! The stencil is a great idea, and of course, best with temporary adhesive spray to hold it in place!! I think this design would look great on a tote bag or mug... or..?? There are companies that will put your design on a number of different objects for you. I wonder, though, if you used a purchased stencil, would it be legal/ ethical to use their design. Might have to make your own stencils... Thank you for sharing your creativity with us!!
I think so long as the poured background was your own, and then you created an original artwork using a stencil with it, then the resulting art is your own original creation and you would be able to add it to items to sell without restriction.
Hi, love your work.....you have a very good taste and you love to be in control with your work.....also you try to do them perfectly finished.....but in this case It's an error for you, but for me it's beautiful exactly cause it's not so sharply black....try also using the stencil to paint with a washed black with brush.
I live in Brazil and we don't have the supplies for this fluid acrilic painting...and what we have is so much expensive... it's a pitty for me cause I really wanted to try...
Thks for sharing your experience.
Happy New year
I always try for a perfect finish but very rarely get it. You see many of the results of my experiments here on UA-cam so of course things never go well the first time we try them, and it is then that I can learn some lessons and pass on tips for what to do and what not to do. I hope that my failures help other people to success. Sorry to hear that you find it hard to get supplies. I hope that as this style of painting spreads, that things will become more easily available for you.
Another good show, thank you. ---Dave...
Cheers Dave. Best wishes for 2018.
I really like the look of this!!! I've bought some stencils, but haven't had a chance to try them as yet. I'm wondering if, for those edges that bled a bit, what it would look like if you used a coordinating color of posca marker with maybe a broader tip and went back over the edges? Thank you for sharing all of your fabulous ideas!! You've been broadening my creative horizons!! A happy & prosperous new year to you!! :)
I think if you had a steady hand then yes, that could certainly work. You could either use the same color, or maybe highlight all the edges with a contrasting color too. Or just part of the stencil. Mine wasn't the ideal one to work with. On my blog article I've got some much better suggestions that I think would look fabulous on poured backgrounds. acrylicpouring.com/using-stencil-add-sprayed-design-poured-painting/
Deby at Acrylic Pouring - yeah, there is that steady hand issue, and that would definitely not be me! Haha!
Valeu deby!!!! Feliz Ano Novo....
E un felice anno nuovo a te Nescau
Beautiful thx
That's interesting. I would worry the spray adhesive might remove some of the pour though. Never used it so I have no idea. I like the fuzzy look... perfection is overrated sometimes. ;) A little imperfection is good for the soul. How does this look several months on? Any issues between the spray paint and acrylic paint? - Heidi
So is spray paint and acrylic paint compatible?!
I think it is good with the uneven edges, it is an pour and the uneven edges fit the bill on this one.... I think it looks great the way it i s, I think you did a fine job.
Thank you very much Janice. Best wishes for 2018.
Great idea! Would also work great if you just had one section of a painting that wasn't to your liking.
Yes I agree Cathy. Best wishes for 2018.
I think it's WAAAAAY easier to use stencils with acrylic paints ~ which we all have plenty of. No new products needed and far less messy. Just tape it down & sponge it thru.
I also use them with oil & cold wax and encaustic.
But my favorite way to use them is with a gelli plate.
Oh dear, I think I am more challenged than I thought. I just tried making a video about stencilling and I did what you suggested. Using acrylic paints and a stencil. I made SUCH a mess. How do you stop the paint leaking under the stencil. It looked good from the top, but when I lifted the stencil, I couldn't make out any of the shapes - it was just one big blur.
You use the paint full strength (no water) on a sponge or stenciling brush (I use a makeup sponge). Dab it into the paint, dab it off a little & then dab it thru the stencil.
I'll find a video if that doesn't make sense.
Glue dots may work better!
Good idea Sandra. Best wishes for 2018.
I liked the painting better. But it's my opinion
