    Books used in this episode:
The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy
    theartofphotogr...
    Abelardo Morell - Camera Obscura
    theartofphotogr...
    Hiroshi Sugimoto
    theartofphotogr...
    Tom Baril
    theartofphotogr...
    Sebastião Salgado - Workers
    theartofphotogr...
In this video we will take a look at works by 4 living and well known photographers - Abelardo Morell, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Tom Baril and Sabastião Salgado. In our analysis we will look at a metaphor from the Douglass Adams book, Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.
The metaphor here is "42". In the book, this number is the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe and everything. It was provided by a giant super computer that took 7.5 million years to compute. The problem is, we have no idea what the question is.
This says a lot about art, photography and possibly humans in general. But it applies to improving your abilities in many ways. Quite frankly, the answers aren't that difficult. For example - you shoot a photograph of a dog. Not hard to get a photograph of a dog and that's the answer - a photograph of a dog. But what about the questions that lead to making such a photograph - even those that question how the image is made? These are considerably more difficult and they ultimately make us better artistically as I'll show you in our examples. These questions are the difference between a snapshot and a beautiful work.

This feels like a university lecture by one hell of a professor.
    Thanks for the video!

I like photo walks, but typically I don't use any photos taken during them. Photography is a solitary activity. It's cool to hang out with people, but it's also limiting. I like to sit in front of the subject and look at it and it. Or walk around it several times. You can't really do that sort of thing when you're out there with someone.
Great episode. And good you've mentioned Salgado, he's got great eye for sure. I went through several books of his images and they are extremely powerful.

Ted gets my mind off of the exposure triangle and more on why I'm taking the photograph. Love it.

these kinda vids teach me SO MUCH more about photography than "developping" and whatnot. You can look that up, it's all technical. This is understanding why you are considered a bad or boring photographer and the person next to you is considered a genius. I'm becoming more and more critical of my own work in a good way, and I hope I can finally proof this year and make it to my next year on school. Thanks for the inspiration :)

Most work that i like takes me to asking, what did this photografer had to do to take this picture. If i find my self asking that question, i probably like it... any way, i think those are asnweres with good questions behind. The episode is great, thank you for making me think about this.

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is one of my favorite books. The second and third are ok as well... but the last few are just really depressing.

It's interesting how the world works. I'm fairly new to this group and about an hour ago I made a comment on Flickr regarding someone's question about making photos more conceptual than basic point and shoot documentation. My suggestion was to simply ask what the concept he's looking for is. I gave an example of asking what the perspective of a house could be from different points of views (child, dog, thief). Then I watched this video. The timing made me chuckle.

Although I agree with you in that we should strive to think outside the box, find new perspectives and not just take the shot that everyone takes, I still think we shouldn't be afraid of taking bad photos. I see photography as a long process and many times those photographs that really suck can lead to new ideas which might or might not lead to great photographs. Taking a great photo is always better than taking a bad photo, but taking a bad photo is always better than not taking a photo at all.

Hi Ted, new to this channel. Have been watching your videos one after another, after another, after another. I think they're great. Thanks for making them. I like that your videos are about photography and not just the latest gear. Very nice to know you're a Douglas Adams fan. I am too.
So long and thanks for all the fish.
    Jeff
P.S. Just to be helpful. The Baril photo you showed at the end, was of the Chrysler Building. I know, I see it every day.

Great episode btw --- I haven't seen too many of your videos here on UA-cam, but this type of discussion speaks to ALL photographers. Not just pros, just amateurs, just film shooters, just digital shooters, etc. , but to all people who put any thought into taking photographs (perhaps even to other art forms as well).

    Hi Ted,
Please don't stop asking the questions you're asking in public on the subject of photography. Your show is very different from anything else I've found on the internet: it's fresh, the episodes are very interesting and you've got skills with the words. Thanks again!

The number one thing I love about photography, is the fact that I can't master this craft within my lifetime. It CAN be a quite depressing thought, but to me it is what keeps me going. Expanding my vision, becoming better day by day.
Your videos are a part of this journey. Keep up the good work, Ted!

Seriously though - this is a masterpiece. The whole episode is good, but the section from 17:17 (photo walk, etc...), through to the end - this is your essay, and it is brilliant.
