One of the classic AOR songe ever.............
I meant songs, sorry for the error..
Released as they supported Iron Maiden on Piece of Mind tour,I was there at Londons Hammersmith Odeon and Grand Prix were great so I went and bought this album soon after. A classic soft metal album.
Edinburgh Playhouse...GP blew Maiden off the stage on that night of the tour. Took Dickenson six songs to get the crowd going and then thanked G.P for their set. Biggest cheer of the night.
Was there too..........flippin brilliant they were!!
I saw them in a small pub in Lancashire on a Thursday,Blow my mind then, still does to this day, should have been Massive !!
Made my day. I've got this on vinyl but nothing to play it on. Thanks for sharing
I love Samurai album and Robin McAuley's emotional voice. In the rage of NWOBHM, Grand Prix was underrated and ignored. Incredible! Long live McAuley!
I'm nearly 75 yrs old...[still 17 yrs inside me heed mind!...just the bones let me doon..!],and have just discovered this band....and THIS track!...it's Awesome...incredibly intense emotion and energy, tight as hell...[a knaa it's a studio version!...not daft!..],but on a par with Iron Maiden....whey....mebbe not as powerful as Maiden, but a great band...[in my younger days in the sixties...they were called "Groups"..not "Bands"..!]
It wudda been a great neet having them on as weel as Maiden,in one neet...lucky for those who were there and can recall the atmosphere!..[..4th Density...for one!!..]
I have discovered Grand Prix in 1981 in their NWOBHM and Kerrang! magazine I wonder why British people dont embrace their UK AOR bands just their do it with Americans and Canadians bands?
Some greats like Grand Prix, Magnum, Tobruk, Saracen, Shiva, Limelight, Terraplane, Briar, Rage, Baby Tuckoo, Bronze, GTR, Marseille, Alaska, Lionheart, Heavy Pettin, Nightwing, Stampede, Shy, all those from those years keep em ignored and undiscovered by so many people and media? Greetings from Brazil for all
Fantastic album....saw them supporting Iron Maiden at Hammersmith in 1983, got an encore, best support band I ever saw....such a shame they never achieved the success they deserved...I had this record on the turntable for years...brilliant!!!
I remember this band as support for Iron Maiden on the 'World Piece Tour' - Cardiff St. David's Hall - 15th May 1983.
OMFG, I just realized I haven't got long left to live.
Robin McAuley -vocals
Michael O''Donoghue -guitar
Ralph Hood -bass
Phil Lanzon -keyboards
Andy Beire -drums
Andy Beirne. Three of them have Irish names. McAuley grew up there, I wonder about O'Donoghue and Beirne.
Saw these lot supporting iron maiden at Preston guild hall aged 15 in 1983, always preffered these ‘pomp rock ‘ bands, so I had to pretend to love iron maiden to my mates so not to lose face, couldn’t stand them to be honest😂 much preferred Grand Prix!
Robin McAuley BEST !
Love this album! Just found the CD remastered on Amazon.
Classic album from the cover to the title track. Every song on this album stands the test of time. Never Before should have been an AOR hit. Great band.
First time I've heard of this group. What can I say? They're awesome!
"Follow your leader wherever he goes, the ring on your finger should be through your nose"
If this band had been from America they would have been massive. Classic AOR, one of the best British AOR albums ever.
Samuraaaaai, the joining of weapon and man.
agreed. the greatest british band never to have made it! I wish they had stuck around longer, 3 albums it way too few....
Great album!!! Last track Samurai masterpiece !!!
In love w/this band... have alll their singles and albums!!!!
You rock, Robin... You Rock, Grand Prix
Saw them in Rishton awesome band bought this album quality !!! love it.
my dad introduced me to this group a few years ago, tis a shame they didn't release more content
only iron maiden support band ive ever seen get an encore apart from anthrax
+mrhard2000uk
I saw them on the Maiden tour too, must have been 1983 (was it really 33 years ago!), they were incredible
watchtheskies yeah world piece tour if my memory serves me lol. glasgow apollo. best venue scotland ever had apart from the barrow lands. they are also the only band that I've bought the album on the back of seeing them live.
+mrhard2000uk Same here -saw them in 1983(?) at the Southampton Gaumont (as was)
+Rob Lincoln Bit of a contrast, to be honest, but it worked!!
Saw them in Bristol with Maiden, I too went and bought this album after.
Wow - I got this album when it first came out. So hard to find (luckily I still have my vinyl to spin). Thanks for posting this! Brings back many great memories.
Magnificence? This is exactly what that sounds like.
I remember buying this cassette in Korea in '87. Love the album. It was amazing. Singer went on to MSG so Grand Prix didn't continue.
I love this album.
vocal from MSG McCauley
No, Grand Prix singer joined MSG!!!!! Perfect Timing was a great album and the next one was awful in my opinion.
Where are you going to eat?
SUBWAY TONIGHT!
those were some awesome times!!!
This is really bringing back some memories people. I got this album {not cd} on the same day I met my ex Mrs. Not sure whether that's a good thing or not but this album is still a classic of the genre in my opinion.
LOVE THIS BAND.
Temos bom gosto !!
Does anybody on here have the b side of the "give me what's mine" single , "one five five" that they could upload?
Always loved this album and thought they sounded a bit like Queen in the early years(Queen 1 and 2), and if you like this check out Black Swan!
i see them as a support band at hammersmith still got all there LP'S.
Wow this is great! Can't believe I've never heard them on the radio.
I think that radio did play Somewhere Tonight back in the day.
Get well soon, Robin McAuley just admitted to hospital with Sepsis!!
Always liked robyns voice, cracking album, the harmonies remind me of yes
Sounds a bit like the bands Yes or Asia.
Grand Prix have been one of my favorite bands for 19 years. I had heard of them from books in my childhood and never seen one album Then Zoom Club put them out on CD and that was how I heard them back then. Superb melodies, great vocals from both Robin and Bernie on the first album, and really impressive lyrics and songs. This makes me feel younger again and at the same time it means just how timeless these songs are. They can transport me to the best times of my life and hope for more good days. I love all kinds of music, but Grand Prix is like the best AOR, hard rock, progressive, and pop all woven together! Three cheers!
Gracias por subir esta banda! Tesoro escondido 💞 me gusta mucho😍
Love this album. My band used to cover Never Before back in the 80’s. 🎸 brings back lots of great memories

Hört sich sehr gut an. Genau richtig für den "alten weißen Mann" (Ü60), der es nicht mehr ganz so hart braucht.

Grand Prix were an English hard rock and pop rock band, active between 1978 and 1984 and notable for featuring two future members of Uriah Heep.
History:
Grand Prix were founded in 1978 under the name Paris. They changed their name to Grand Prix in 1980 with the lineup of Bernie Shaw on lead vocals, Michael O'Donoghue on guitar, Ralph Hood on bass, Andy Beirne on drums and Phil Lanzon on keyboards. All five members performed harmony vocals, while Lanzon would contribute the occasional lead vocal, as illustrated on such songs as "Which Way Did the Wind Blow?".
In 1980, the band released their debut self-titled album on RCA Records. "Which Way Did the Wind Blow?" was released as a single, with music videos being filmed for it and two other songs from the album, "Feel Like I Do" and "Westwind". These videos showed the band playing on a stage with no audience.
In 1981, Shaw left the band and was replaced by Robin McAuley, who would record two more albums with the group, There for None to See (1982) and Samurai (1983), before they disbanded in 1984.
Shaw and Lanzon would end up joining Uriah Heep as that band's vocalist and keyboardist, respectively, in 1986, and to this day they remain the band's longest-serving keyboardist and vocalist. O'Donoghue went on to join Bronz and in the early nineties spent a year in the Ian Gillan band. McAuley ended up joining with guitar virtuoso Michael Schenker to form the McAuley Schenker Group and would go on to briefly front the band Survivor during the latter half of the 2000s.

"Originally released in June 1983, ‘Samurai’ showcased a newfound maturity in the songwriting department and a glossier sound aimed squarely at the American market. From the moment crescendo-driven opener ‘Give Me What’s Mine’ kicked in it was clear that Grand Prix had evolved into a band with a truly international pedigree and then some. Boasting more hooks than most pop bands could muster, tracks like the smouldering power ballad ‘Here We Go Again’, rabble rousing ‘Freedom’, the swaggering ‘Countdown To Zero’ and shimmering title track ‘Samurai’ were a bold revelation, affirmation that the UK finally had a serious contender to the likes of Styx, Journey and Foreigner. That the band never went on to achieve fame and fortune (indeed, they split soon after the album was released) is once again testament to the ineptitude of the clueless fuckwits who ran the record industry at the time.
Lovingly rescued from the vaults, brilliantly remastered by the ever dependable Jon Astley and presented with all the usual Rock Candy trimmings (great packaging with sleeve notes from Malcolm Dome and a couple of live bonus tracks taken from their Reading Festival appearance in ’82), ‘Samurai’ is a prime example of British pomp infused AOR at its best and as such is utterly indispensible!"
