When you watch and listen to these wonderful performers, just think what America has come to. It would be great to know that this way of life could be preserved in this decadent society.
You should get out more. It's still around. There are many festivals that celebrate this art. That is where to meet people to learn where to go for lessons, where are the clubs that meet regularly, to to play an instrument and what is needed from patrons and supporters if there is a real desire to preserve these art forms. Begin with the festivals like Shindig on the Green- Asheville NC, Appalachian Stringband Festival (aka Clifftop) - Clifftop, WV. You see whst you're focused on. The world is in rough shape but its not all bad. Adjust your focus 😉
Reading this March 2021, your pessimism appears to have been warranted the way basic decency has nose dived even further including the beautiful Constitution under threat. I pray enough people stand up and defend the real America.......not a communist version of it.......
@@samhunt9380 oh good grief. Do you want a segregated society where women are essentially brainwashed to be slaves of men. You are just a poorly educated tool of the rich who love exploiting your ignorance and appetites.
@@gottasay4766 What are you talking about??? Are you saying you want the traditional American way of life destroyed??? Oh and by the way, you have no idea the level of my education and true to form, when people have no argument, they resort to personal attacks, just like you are.
I was born and raised in Kentucky (40 miles from Lexington) and I can remember my mom and dad dancing like this. My uncles would play the banjo, fiddle and guitar at the local school and all the neighborhood folks would come and dance the "flat foot". Much simpler times.... Anyway, love this video -brings back a lot of wonderful memories.
Wow! That was fun to watch! Made me want to get up and join them. Great dancing, great fun and that tall string bean of a man held his own with the ladies. He had some great moves and the ladies were sure great. Thank you for posting this.
Have just ordered 2 lots of steel capped and heeled shoes for my sis and me and we are getting a mate to make two round individual boards for us to dance on. He plays banjo. This is SO INSPIRING and we start lessons in 2 weeks locally in England. YEEHAA. Jenny
You won't see much more of it unless something happens to change it. Dying out. ua-cam.com/video/cs2j8f7H2WY/v-deo.html How old are you, if you don't mind me asking? and where from? I'm just curious since you say you've never seen this type of dancing before. I'm Gen X from from Tennessee and grew up around this kind of thing.
Yesss, thanks for this video, I had ancestors and probably family members still in the Appalachians. I can feel the love of this music and dance in my blood.
@Bedonkohee McFee You being serious? Because I like the music? I said I liked the music, not you, you ignorant bastard. Now you go and fuck yourself, theres a good boy
beautiful thank you for posting this, my parents would take us to these festivals when we were young so that we would remember our heritage Ive been gone for so long I was so happy to run across this thank you again!!!
My heavens if folk can start a dispute about who started this wonderful form of let's just have a good time playing music an dancing....there's no hope for humanity....its pure joy ...love it and them and I'm a geordie gal north east England ....eeeee get your clogs on and dance man instead of arguments ♥
I am a decendant of the Scotch-irish, GERMAN JEW immigrants to Mount Mitchell NC. Clogging is an American dance form that began in the Appalachian Mountains. As they were settled in the mid 1700's by the Irish, Scottish, English and Dutch-Germans, the folk dances of each area met and began to combine, the beginning of clog dancing. Accompanied by rousing fiddle and bluegrass music, the word "Clog" comes from Gaelic and means "time". Clogging is a dance that is done in time with the music
Scandalous having dresses that short & showing their forearms ! ! Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaa ! ! So much wholesome fun for young'uns. Keeps 'em outa trouble & off drugs. Maybe Mayor Emmanuel should introduce this in Chicago? Thanks for posting this. Great talent.
Yes yes yes! Your comment more relevant now than ever! Just started watching these recently, and of course more and more keep popping up, and I just wish SOMEONE would introduce this to the youth in the big cities. Might take a little while, but packaged right it most definitely would catch on. And good stuff would follow.
OMG I am in love with the girl in the middle with curly long dark hair. She is a Goddess, a dream come true. I have seen this video 2/3 times daily since I don't know when. She is perfect.
Love this music! Can't get enough of it, even though 'Big Donkey McThick' from Kilkenny told me I weren't welcome and he was coming over to dear old England to rough me up if I ever came back hahaha...Coming back every day to listen!
Scots- Irish (Scots moved by England to Ireland) migrated to America in the late 1600's early 1700's due to conflict between Protestant and Catholics in Ireland (still going on today). Moved thru Baltimore to Appalachians due to hostility of early Americans towards immigrants. They adapted well to mountains as it was not unlike Scotland. Became adept Indian fighters and lent support to Washington teaching them guerilla tactics - this helped turn tide of American Revolutionary war 1776
@mgbronner Ireland, if I'm not mistaken. To begin with, the similarities between what you see in this video and traditional Irish dancing are quite stark. Actually, one might be hard-pressed to differentiate the two, if it wasn't for the music, which isn't that entirely different either.
Great. I love this . I could watch this all day , I wanted to get up and do it my self. except I have to bad knees. but sure thought about giving it a try.
Saw Spank the Planks last week at Wimborne Folk Festival 2012, the line up has changed this video was taken, there are no guys in the group currently. in this video is a friend of mine Joy, she is no longer in the group sadly .
Great stuff girls! It is a pity the video picture quality is so poor. I guess you all have to get together and do it again! I look forward to to seeing the new version.:) Thanks for posting!
Having relatives/ancestors from Kentucky (but not the Appalachian region) this was new to me. I see the Scottish/Irish influence though. I hope this culture is preserved and passed on to many future generations; it is unique and precious.
The Lancashire mill gitrls we carried in our buses and coaches would often start an impromptu clog dance usually round the bemused driver (me) but and this is the but it was on cobbles or setts, so hence the local dialect question to a boy/girl "Are ye sparkin?" 400 girls with only a handful of overseers made a hot mixture but dangerous as the local lads still practised "clog purring" (fighting) on the moors and you don't want to go there! All about 50 years ago.
hetrodoxly,,,,, fair play,my mother in law is from lancashire, and she was always going on about clog dancinig when she was young, she is quite old now !!

I LOVE that they're all wearing different traditional quilt square designs on the bodice of their dresses--another art that needs to be kept alive.

If you form your opinions by the negativity you hear in the news, that's all you will see. There is plenty of good in this country, if you only look.

You can tell the ones that have been trained in traditional Irish dance. Their arms are at their sides throughout.

Its similar to Irish dancing. Its wonderful to see these old historic dances preserved. Our Maypole dances has all but vanished in England..
This was filmed in the south of England.

Clogging primarily developed from Irish step dancing called Sean-nós dance
This is such a beautiful dance! Really loved it!

Hmm, I see similarities myself--esp. to the Irish hard shoe step dancing. But anyway, I also have English ancestors, so it's all good.
hetrodoxly English? I'm guessing you've never seen RiverDance? Some of the moves are tit-for-tat identical.
hetrodoxly Your saying so means nothing. Absolutely nothing. There's nothing more English than claiming credit for things others have accomplished.

That hearty dancing will make a man want to jump up and slap his papa.
Great Video. Are they all american? Can't find any other videos of them on You Tube.
Excellent! I think I just met my next six or seven wives.
lol, I was thinking the very same thing.:)
The Scots brought their music, dancing and whiskey.
The Scots brought WHISKY, music and dancing. The Irish brought Whiskey (and terrible accents)😊
So close to clog dance of Scotland & Northern England. That's where the people came from
