    I was born and raised in Kentucky (40 miles from Lexington) and I can remember my mom and dad dancing like this. My uncles would play the banjo, fiddle and guitar at the local school and all the neighborhood folks would come and dance the "flat foot". Much simpler times.... Anyway, love this video -brings back a lot of wonderful memories.

    When you watch and listen to these wonderful performers, just think what America has come to. It would be great to know that this way of life could be preserved in this decadent society.

      You should get out more. It's still around. There are many festivals that celebrate this art. That is where to meet people to learn where to go for lessons, where are the clubs that meet regularly, to to play an instrument and what is needed from patrons and supporters if there is a real desire to preserve these art forms. Begin with the festivals like Shindig on the Green- Asheville NC, Appalachian Stringband Festival (aka Clifftop) - Clifftop, WV. You see whst you're focused on. The world is in rough shape but its not all bad. Adjust your focus 😉

    Scots- Irish (Scots moved by England to Ireland) migrated to America in the late 1600's early 1700's due to conflict between Protestant and Catholics in Ireland (still going on today). Moved thru Baltimore to Appalachians due to hostility of early Americans towards immigrants. They adapted well to mountains as it was not unlike Scotland. Became adept Indian fighters and lent support to Washington teaching them guerilla tactics - this helped turn tide of American Revolutionary war 1776

    I am a decendant of the Scotch-irish, GERMAN JEW immigrants to Mount Mitchell NC. Clogging is an American dance form that began in the Appalachian Mountains. As they were settled in the mid 1700's by the Irish, Scottish, English and Dutch-Germans, the folk dances of each area met and began to combine, the beginning of clog dancing. Accompanied by rousing fiddle and bluegrass music, the word "Clog" comes from Gaelic and means "time". Clogging is a dance that is done in time with the music

    @mgbronner Ireland, if I'm not mistaken. To begin with, the similarities between what you see in this video and traditional Irish dancing are quite stark. Actually, one might be hard-pressed to differentiate the two, if it wasn't for the music, which isn't that entirely different either.

    The Lancashire mill gitrls we carried in our buses and coaches would often start an impromptu clog dance usually round the bemused driver (me) but and this is the but it was on cobbles or setts, so hence the local dialect question to a boy/girl "Are ye sparkin?" 400 girls with only a handful of overseers made a hot mixture but dangerous as the local lads still practised "clog purring" (fighting) on the moors and you don't want to go there! All about 50 years ago.

      Replace Hun by German please. The war is over. 70 years by now. Aaaaaaand; the Celts came from from where i live and mooved later to to Great Brittain to meet the Romans there again (Romans had been here as well ;-)). History can be funny!

    • @sohosean
      @sohosean 9 років тому +2

      +Hartmut Writh Entschuldingen Sie mich, bitte.
      My use of "Huns" did not refer to the Germans, a people whom greatly I admire and whose language I studied. "Huns" is a term used by Irish nationalists to refer to the English, whose royalty is German (Battenbergs, not the false name of "Windsor" that they assume.) and whose roots go back to Saxony.
      I believe it came about from copying the British use of the term 'Hun" to refer to the Germans in WK1. The Irish borrowed it, to remind the British they treat Ireland like medieval invaders.
      I used it here to refer to some troll who was insisting that this type of dancing is 100% English, without influence from Scotland or Ireland. This imperialist attitude is typical of British "Hunish" behavior. Germany has always been a friend of Ireland and we appreciate that, meiner Freund.

      man, get over your dislike of the English. We are a mongrel race. Most people have DNA roots from all over. I am English but with 25% Irish blood plus French ancestry, plus, plus. Most of us are like this. Love and peace.

      So what does your DNA and ancestry have to do with the source and origin of this dance?
      Nothing! So why bring it up. No one is interested.
      Some Englishman here was insisting this dance had English roots, when that is clearly not the case. Instead of lecturing, do some research on the dance form.
      I am for historical accuracy and won't allow cultural hegemony by some super-nationalist English to alter that.

      The royal family's name is Saxe-Coburg-Gotha not Battenberg later changed to Mountbatten by Lord Mountbatten's family. Do try and get your facts right Timmy and have a bath you stink. The dancers on this video are a pleasure to watch unlike the heifers who river dance in pit boots, typical dhim hates the crown but loves the half crown.
