BMW guy. Just sold my 20 M2 Comp for a 23 2 door JCW hardtop. Absolutely loving it. I missed owning a small hatch and it being a BMW made it perfect for me. Easy fix for the ride harshness is stick with the 17” wheel and 45 tire. Mine rides softer than my M2C not harsh ride at all and still as much fun to drive as my M2 was

@@squidwardshouse67 as someone who's owned an M2 comp and currently drives a manual CT4 Blackwing & ALSO owns a manual '22 JCW 2 door hardtop... In many ways I prefer the JCW.
When you daily a car that has a max speed of 190 and a 0-60 of 4 seconds w/472hp, you realize that speed, power... It's nice, but I'm (hypothetically) already breaking the law with 3 more gears to go if I'm pushing the car. I literally NEVER get to use the car to it's fullest.
The JCW tho, I can wring the crap out of it, get turbo flutter, rorty exhaust noise, crisp shifts, even some oversteer once you tighten the suspension. It's no RWD monster like the Blackwing or it's contemporaries, but that's not the point.
Its a little stupid, and that's why I love it.
If you want 90% of the fun of a Miata, but with more practicality, a 2 door JCW hardtop is the best idea.
Exciting, quick (not fast), available with a manual, and has at least a modicum of practicality. The 2 door HARDTOP JCW is a big win in my book.

I just bought a 2022 Mini Cooper JCW Convertible. I love it. It's so much fun. The suspension isn't any worse (I'd even say it rides better) than the Subaru BRZ I've had for 6 years. When I bought the BRZ, I almost bought a Miata, but I didn't like the way the interior was laid out (read cup holders) and hubs was cramped. This is just the absolutely most adorable and fun car I've been looking for.

As I’m sure the two of you already know, the harshness of the ride you’re experiencing with this particular car, is in fact because it is a convertible. Additional enhancements made to the strength and structural rigidity of the chassis are necessary to compensate for the lack of a solid roof. Unfortunately, it’s an inherent characteristic of all BMW built convertibles as far back as the mid 80’s. A non convertible, JCW equipped version of the same car does still have a firm suspension feel, but at least the risk of breaking a tooth over rough roads surfaces is greatly reduced 🤭🤕

Clubman is what I meant to say, it’s just that little extra bit of quirky design that I love in the MINI Coopers (even though the rear mirror is a bit atrociously small from what I’ve seen

To do it right: get the normal hatch - which is 150kg lighter, handles better, has a more usable boot and folddown back seats (a dishwasher? No problem.), does 6.1 to 60, and 246 top speed.
It's the current B48 4 cyl. petrol used in all BMW's, the Toyoata Aisin 8 speed used in all fwd BMW's, it's proper build quality&materials - so it's worth it (compared to the VW's, Hyundai's, also the current - which are....well...soul-less, boring, budget cars).
Drive it on alpine or wild twisty roads - and watch the usual 1600kg+ "sporty" cars trying. Aka failing.....
Those straight line, intersection, straight line - US kind of streets, are definitely not, what a Mini is made for.
If you have the adaptive damping and face bad roads - configure it properly, or drive in mid mode.
In that mid mode, the hatch is around as stiff as my BMW 125d with M adaptive Suspension in Sport+.
Not Mercedes S class comfort - but liveable.
One i agree with: the HUD with the plex shield - is between ok and pointless - that's why i didnt spec it.
So in all honesty: perfect car for cornering, fun, style, character, quality - and the occasional 155mph Autobahn run - but you drive it on the wrong continent....

I used to have a stock 2015 Cooper S (and the JCW you are reviewing is quicker) and I beat GTIs and a Veloster N racing. I think MINI uses conservative performance numbers.

Yep said my SD was like 8.9 secs 0 to 60 when Ive gotten 7.8 to 8.1 s draggy confirmed and now it's remapped it's now 6.8 0 to 60 which is pretty decent for a fwd car. gear 2 and up it really is quite quick feeling.

Just bought a JCW 3dr hatch a few weeks ago and I’d agree the ride is a tad harsher than I was expecting but as it’s used for commuting it’s just fine. Would you pick one of these or a m235i or a fairly basic tt? all around the same price point in UK 🇬🇧 😎

I bought a Mini Countryman JCW back in May and I love it. Lots of personality and the spiciest factory version of the B48 make it a lot of fun to daily while still being practical. My price in the USA was mid 40’s and for that it feels like decent value for money. Like the one being shown here the exhaust is surprisingly raucous and it has that same feeling of just wanting to play and have fun rather than being “serious sports car”.

I have an older Mini Cooper S from 2011- I can almost ASSURE you that the reason the mini has a sub-par ride quality is because of the tires. Because minis don’t really have the space for spare tires, the ones on them are run-flats, which means thicker sidewalls. Most cars get extra damping from their tires, which help absorb bumps. With the thick sidewalks on run-flat tires, it greatly compromises the ride quality. Buy a good set of regular tires, and you’ll see a significant improvement, with a top-shelf tire plugging kit or an AAA subscription.

May I point out that its 0-62 mph in 6.1 seconds not 60, because of a gear change that happens just before 60 it make the 62mph seem bad whereas it's 5.8 seconds to 60 mph which isn't that bad.

I wonder if the less solid body structure of the convertible degrades the ride over the more solid hardtop, or if its just the JCW suspension tune?

  • @cleysoptique8749
    @cleysoptique8749 3 роки тому +1

One thing in regards to the suspension I know with my JCW I can have it set up to be in green mode for the suspension but sport mode for the engine that way I get a cushioning feel but I get the performance behind it.
However in my honest opinion I don't think it's a great setup because you're going to be bouncier, you will not get the best ride and what I mean by the best ride, is I'm talking about when you're in sport mode you're going to want it to be firm, you're going to want it to give you all the nuances on the road, you want to feel what's going on something that you don't get when you start having better dampeners essentially you have less feedback from the road. Which is not ideal. Something that muscle cars seem to do more often than not is give you a dampening ride but you have a lot of straight line performance but sucks in the corners because of that exact reason so it's not really a fun car to enjoy on the road if you got to turn. Have you ever driven a Miata on coilovers? It handles amazing but it's the same thing that's going to be very stiff stiffer than a JCW will be 😂
