How to BUILD a SINGLE-SPEED BIKE in ABOUT AN HOUR!

  • And if you use a nice bike and better parts instead of a rusty old Peugeot and a chain from a garage door opener, your single-speed might actually be rideable.
    I used mostly basic hand tools in this video, except for these:
    Park Tool chain tool: amzn.to/2NWQXxY
    Park Tool chain whip: amzn.to/2mqvWiJ
    Park Tool 8/9/10mm wrench: amzn.to/2O2TeaP
    I also used the Canon G7X, which is a nice li'l point-and-shoot with a great wind filter: amzn.to/2mrkbbL
    Recorded on 7/18/2018 and honestly I can't believe I got it done without running out of daylight.

      because it's a shit tutorial on how to downgrade an ok old beater(it would be after some maintenance, all it probably needed was new cables cassette chain and cleaned up rims) into an unsafe turd with the worst handlebars i've ever seen with only 1 brake

      Simpler than all of this is shortening your chain to your desired gear pairing and don't ever try shifting it again. Voila, it's a one-speed in around ten minutes. Perfect for flatlands, very flat lands. You're welcome.

    Hey, nothing wrong with breathing new life into an old frame. Bikes are for fun and going places. So long as it does these things? Then it is a 'proper' bike.
    Not nearly so extreme example: My shifter cable broke. I can't exactly order a spare right now. So I pull the freewheel apart, cut chain to length, and with much swearing and crying over getting the alignment wrong repetedly? I'm rocking a single speed until my situation changes. I could've just jammed the deraileur into a specific gear through the H screw, but like. 'hey I'm not gonna do this by halves.'
    Amazing how well the spacers from the freewheel itself worked. Granted I also had to make a spacer BEHIND the freewheel, but I have fence on the metal pile that's not doinganything so cut, shape, use bench vice to straighten it out, screw thigns back together after making sure the sizing is right. All chain drops. GONE. I'm out of shape and it's a 30lbs bike so not flinging it around all willy nilly, but I'm having a grand time.

      I plan to 3d print a fixie bike :) on my super light road bike I built from scratch (including wheels, I hate when people say from scratch and it not wheels too) use both brakes, mountain bike I stop from 20mph to full stop in less than 2 metres and I only use front brake, on fixie for on road front brake is law, and as seeing you said rear brake I can say I prefer front as tried just rear and the back slides out and nearly threw me off

    You need rear brake on single speed, brah; only fixed gears get a free pass on a rear brake because you can stop the rear wheel via the cranks. Otherwise, you're giving plod a reason to stop you and check all your particulars while you just want to be out rolling around getting it done.

    Converting it to a single speed is already dumb but that was the point of the video i guess.
    But downgrading the perfectly usable handlebars and brakes into the mess you created(super narrow unsafe shit bars with ONE brake) with zero benefits of the old version is just plain terrible

    • @ItsDaJax
      @ItsDaJax 4 роки тому +2

      Nothing wrong with those bars. Cutting a bit off does not compremise what is a static part of the bike. If a bike is going to have a single brake, the front is best.

    • @Stoney3K
      @Stoney3K 3 роки тому

      @@ItsDaJax Bull horn bars are generally wider than drops, having bars that you can only ride on the narrow parts of the tops will give you terrible balance.
      I agree with someone above, it's better to just flip the bars upside down and cut them just before the big bend of the drops to make some longer bull horns if you want them, but I would have personally just kept the drops and the original brake levers.
