France's Moselle department, bordering Germany and Luxembourg, has been severely impacted by recent flooding. A weather system bringing exceptional rainfall over a 24-hour period on May 17th. This deluge overwhelmed the Moselle River and its tributaries, causing widespread devastation. The Moselle region witnessed historic rainfall amounts. In the northern Alsace region, Scheibenhard received a staggering 116.8 millimeters of rain in just 24 hours, shattering previous records. Similarly, Hestroff in Moselle recorded 101.1 mm, with many other stations registering rainfall equivalent to a month to a month and a half of typical precipitation. This sustained downpour proved too much for the region's waterways to handle. The torrential rain triggered flash flooding across the Moselle department. Towns like Boulay, Saint-Avold, Sarreguemines, and Bouzonville faced the brunt of the disaster. Videos captured floodwaters inundating streets and homes, with cars swept away by the powerful currents.
